Coach Search Options after Autry

I've been calling into that show since end of January telling these brain dead listeners to get out of the CNY bubble. Alot of these folks don't watch cbball outside of SU and Hopkins at UW, Gerry at Siena so they have no perspective outside of SU affiliation.
All this time I was thinking GMac was a good coach. I’ve been brain dead the whole time. Thank you…..thank you for giving me fresh perspective. DOWN WITH ALL BOEHEIM ATTACHMENTS!!!

I haven't said he was bad, I said the listeners have no perspective to candidates outside of SU affiliation. There's a difference. 3 years ago the search was too narrow. We can't afford that mistake once again. I just don't see them choosing the runner up from 3 years ago this time around. Would be too narrow minded once again.

The unexpected rise of Keaton Wagler at Illinois

after reading this article want to throw a name out there: Illinois assistant coach Tyler Underwood, Brad's son and Wagler's primary recruiter.

i think this article deserves its own thread but too lazy to make it

for one, in the NIL era, a guy who can find the diamonds in the rough would be worth his weight in diamonds

for 2, i really like his approach to talent id:

Illinois scouts players through four pillars: positional size, basketball IQ, basketball character and no skill deficiencies.

"We thought he was 4-of-4, which is very rare," Tyler Underwood said.

this approach is the right one!

when was the last time SU had even 1 player with no skill deficiencies? SUs recruiting approach goes off of HS rankings and thats it

any school can find talent if they go off this way instead of just buying into the hype

Same thing talking with people at the last couple Cuse games. Only the diehards know all the names and faces.

Gerry wasn't really the runner up. He wasn't even interviewed for the job from what I hear.

I always wondered if it was a great big *** to JB for how he handled his last year that Gerry was not even considered
It is my understanding he made it clear that Gerry was his preferred successor
He was Meh about Red, from what I was told.

During JBs day it was length for the zone, hit and miss shooting, PGs that weren't really PGs etc

True story , I played soccer for Oswego St early 80s Mike Deane used to come out and play in our scrimmages with us. I guess to keep in shape . He wasn’t bad . Nice guy as well .
Nice, he was an All American under Jerry Welsh at Potsdam and was drafted in the ninth round by the Bucks (Old days NBA drafts)
True Story as well: Our baseball coach at Oswego (Doc Nitardy) retired in the Spring of 86. At his retirement dinner at Vona's Restaurant in Oswego, Deane came and was buying drinks (including we players) for everyone. He had just been hired at Siena.

I like:
"the ability to shoot over bigs who switched onto him and a knack for avoiding superman passes in favor of sensible ones."

Rumor I heard a few days ago was that Hopkins agent was negotiating a contract with su. All figures were in agreement minus the nil money he felt the school needed to guarantee to turn the program around. If this is true which this sources usually is then we maybe disappointed in the coaching hire. I doubt bh comes here if the nil funds are lacking. A good coach is not coming here to not be competitive and have every resource that’s needed.

Heard something similar. Hoping person is just behind the ballgame.

Are we still doing this crap? Yeah, the fanbase won’t be disappointed. They’ll be in full-on revolt. Everyone knows that Hop would be an unserious hire and we’d be the laughingstock of college basketball to retread such a failed coach. This would be a nightmare scenario on the level of Heather Lyke as AD. Are the PTB actually serious? I wouldn’t come here if I was Carparelli and had Hop foisted upon me. Hop would never be anything more than mediocre in this job. And we’d have five more years of this nonsense.

I thought Hopkins was bringing 30 million in NIL why would he be worried about NIL then?

Then the rumors of somebody giving 30 million if Hopkins is the choice wasn’t true then?
My,my,my. What rumors do we believe?

This doesn’t make sense. The top item Hop brought to the table was an NIL support package…

Whatever "it" is with regard to charisma, media savvy, confidence, presence...this guy has it. That doesn't mean he can't fail as a coach at the next level. It's a huge leap going from the AAC to the ACC - if that is where Hodgson ends up. But he seems to the "it" part down, along with an interesting backstory.

Hodgson will be a media darling...IF/when he wins at his next stop. Finger crossed.
