Coaching Candidates (My List)

Do coaches want to leave a lesser conference to come to the ACC? It’s so down right now that it’s a weird time. Like no coach is leaving the Big East unless they get a bag to come to Cuse and hope to resurrect the program.

I think the ACC provides access to the top level of sports. Win the ACC, you can't be ignored.

I think we ultimately agree on the conclusion that the best road is to find a top candidate who has established success at a mid-major. We are attractive enough for most of those candidates... part of it will come down to fit, luck and what other job openings also are open at the same time we are looking.

I'll still disagree with someone that doesn't think we have taken a large brand hit the last 10 years. We haven't been overly relevant for 10 years, and we have been bad (in terms of major conference schools) for 4 years in a row now. It's not a hole that you can't dig out of with the right coach and system/identity. We see teams like Iowa St yo-yo from good to bad, so a turnaround can happen quick. But the team will be built bacl up on the right coach, the right system, right identity... the brand isn't going to be what build us back up in my view.
I think we are still in a spot where almost every mid-major coach would take the job - now If there was a certain hot name that drew multiple P5 offers we may not land that specific coach, but the point stands. I also think we’d be upgrades for about half of the P4+BE coaches - assuming the money is roughly the same/slight increase. We could also probably get any assistant we want, but I don’t think we’d go that way.

The problem is a lot the names here ARE unrealistic. We aren’t getting Shaka, or Few or McDermott. or Jay Wright.

But I do think as long as the money is decent, we could have our pick of any except 25-30 coaches.

Autry had no experience. If we had a job opening in the off season there would be a TON of HCs with program building/winning experience that would be interested. Still gotta make the right hire - but at least with a national search you have more data to look at; because you’re looking at coaches who’ve ran their own program/offense/defense before. With Red the only thing we knew was he was with JB the last 10 years as part of our downfall.

Yep, Hodgson is that dude (and has shown he can coach).
Yes, Hodgson had been an asst. since 2007 and now has the reins at Arkansas St. He went 20 -17 his first year as a HC and is 10-3 so far this year. Maybe?

That last part is what always baffled me about the hire. He was on the bench and part of the downward slide of the program. It would have been different had the last ten years not steadily trended downward with Boeheim. I do understand that hiring an assistant was what was going to help with Boeheim “retiring”, but it shouldn’t have HAD to happened that way.

Here's an article showing head coach salaries: Men's Basketball Head Coach Salaries - USA TODAY. If Autry makes what someone here said he makes, he's around 40th on the list, higher than Hubert Davis, Mark Few, Larranaga, Shaka Smart, Brownell etc. Langel makes 500k, Hodgson makes 450k. Interest list and the real separation is in the top 10-15.

All things considered, Cuse is in a real tough spot here. If Autry is fired, you POTENTIALLY (that conversation would need to be had) lose the support and son of your most recognizable bball alum. On the other hand, college basketball is proving that it is very difficult to win with young players, so even if Freeman/Moore come back (that’s a big if especially for Freeman, you can tell by his body language he’s not happy) with the addition of Anthony/White, chances are that team still isn’t ultra competitive. They would need a stud veteran PG and stud veteran center, which we likely don’t have the NIL funds to accomplish. On top of that, Autry has shown NOTHING that makes anyone believe he can mold talent into a winning product on the floor. Another year of mediocre or worse play on the court will crush this program that already hasn’t been relevant for a dozen years besides a fluke trip to the final four in ‘16 and a fluke trip to the sweet 16 in ‘18. Not to mention, there are some pretty good candidates who won’t be available for long, including Hodgson and Murray.

Personally I think you have the convo with Melo, assure them there is a plan, and go get one of those two guys. Hodgson was Oats right hand man and was referred to as a “shark” on the recruiting trail by multiple coaches. Oats plays an exciting, up tempo, in your face style, and the only reason many in central NY don’t like him is because he called out JB’s squad for being soft (he was right) a few years back when he was at UB. Hodgson would bring a similar style, and he also has a smoke show for a wife so he’s obviously used to overachieving. Murray basically designed UCONN’s offense, and is considered an innovator amongst the coaching profession. He is obviously well versed in analytics, and knows how to find and mold WINNING players.

I think missing out on one of these two guys would be a damn shame. I know they both are unproven as head coaches, at least at the P4 level in Hodgson’s case, but the upside is tremendous. Compared to Autry’s qualifications when he was promoted, it’s night and day.

It is what it is.

The gamble was that even if Red was not the longterm answer, he'd be competent enough to hold all of it together in the shorterm.

No one was hoping for a slow motion trainwreck of epic proportions.

It was the worst case scenario we gambled would likely NOT happen.

My worry here is JW being hesitant to pull the trigger on an unproven "up and comer" for hoops. Especially after just doing the same with Red. ADs can't miss twice in a row. The hoops brand, for the deterioration its faced the past few years, is delicate, and isn't where football was pre-Fran (yet), which led to the big swing.

I see JW being much more risk-adverse here and hiring a Langel type (who is great, btw) than taking a higher-upside risk on a lesser-known coach.

In short: I would be surprised if either Hodgson or Murray were even on his radar. Fran wasn't until he reached out himself.

Yeah but Rick Barnes said he's the right man for the job. Orangenation brought that up to stop the Red bashing after the Tenny blowout.
what did they think he would say, "He's a terrible coach and needs to be replaced." Coaches aren't going to bash other coaches, it's a close-knit fraternity.

Langel has been good for Colgate, unquestionably... but not this year so far.

Colgate is 3-10 right now heading into Patriot League play.

It's nearly inevitable in the portal era to have a "rebuilding" year in a league like the Patriot. Doesn't take away the fact he's dominated the league, consistently been in the tournament and coached circles around us for years now.

I'm not saying I don't like him, just that this year looks a bit rougher than his usual.

Others have mentioned him, but it's worth pointing out to fans who identify with a JB mold, no-nonsense, tough play style his best teams had, that's Ben McCollum at Drake.

He coaches them up to develop in the program, much like Bennett did at UVA. They out-toughed Miami and Kansas St this year so far. Effort would never be a question at SU under him. He's a D2 HOF coach for a reason, and his success in D1 is only just getting started.

Not as flashy on the recruiting trail as Hodgson or a Murray, but it will be hard to find a better program builder than McCollum.

If Melo is watching, I think at this point he knows what has to be done.

I think Ben McCollum will have a solid coaching career. I hope it isn't at SU. He has no ties to the northeast. That would be a problem.

Hodgson would be my top choice as of now.

Hodgson seems like a basketball version of Fran Brown. Watched a post game interview after his team beat Memphis. Really sounds like a fighter, and a winner!

I think whatever gig McCollum takes next will be a trial run for a really big job, like Bill Self or Tom Izzo's eventual replacement.
