Coaching Lost the FSU Game

Not getting a touchdown after the Duce pick was huge. I hated the first down call from the seven and then Shrader tries to run up the middle. Shrader missed a couple of open passes, but he showed that he can throw the ball well enough to win games.
The fumble TD says it all

I certainly don't want to try to co-create some narrative here, but when that happened, I was thinking, would he be this gleeful if Shrader just made a great play? Don't get me wrong, I don't mean to imply anything here, but it was odd (at the least) that he was so cheerful after we just botched an opportunity to move forward.
I don't think you're co-creating anything...

yawn, indeed, its the coaches job to put the player in a position to make a play, he did. fact.

they didn’t call the hold.
I hear you but it’s also an all or nothing strategy. If you don’t get him it’s nothing but daylight.

not Questioning it was a horrible no call but I still don’t get why you don’t play it safe there.

we were playing a defense assuming a run to try to get 3 or 4 yards

Because they made the right call.

it’s like suggesting why they didn’t pass instead of running a draw on 3rd and 10 that goes for a td.

I didn’t realize that we were winning at the time and that was the last play of the game?? Even with a holding call, our chances of winning is 50/50 at best.

it is easy to blame the refs, but coaching lost this one. Dino quit once he got paid.
Don’t agree at all

Again you don't go down to FSU and kick field goals hoping to win. Zero issues with aggressive call.

szmyt hasnt been automatic this year so i have no problem going for it

Two specific situations lost this game.
DB poor clock management at the end of the first half.
DB going conservative on last series and setting for a FG.
While I thought the officiating was abysmal, I can’t disagree with your conclusion.

Players watching the FSU player pick up the fumble and run in for a touchdown, Wax letting up on the qb's sideline run, not kicking the early easy field goal...there were many situationsthat cost us the game.

Everyone at my house could not understand why Shrader was not under center on the goal line touchdown that we were short on. The next goal line he did go under center and scored easily. Little things like that baffle me. As big as Shrader is you would think it would be common sense.

My two DB coaching critiques this game were no calling rime out with 22 secs remaining in 1H - would’ve allowed for time and offense to reset after big play. 2nd was going for hail mary instead of having Andre try a long FG. Don’t have a problem with other FG / 4th decisions - was being aggressive.

One of my Big picture issues is that we don’t seem to be a smart fball team. Not going after ball on fumble TD, not getting QB out of bounds on FSU’s last drive, usually have lots of penalties, etc. We never win the “football IQ” battle.

the Wax play was unfortunate. Of course he should’ve blasted the kid but if the QB steps out of bounds it’s a likely flag. Can’t understand though how Wax doesn’t even put hands on him. Truly bizarre play.

Yeah he has had a couple calls against him and almost seems like he shy’s away because he likely thought the guy was going out of bounds. I get it….don’t love it but I get it.

Haven’t read entire thread so sorry if said.

1- the hold directly led to game winning kick.
2- coaching decisions impacted this game big time and were a big reason that number 1 mattered so much.

Both true.

Hated settling for 3 late. The Tucker run just to run the Shrader keep on second didn’t make sense to me. One or the other. Credit to FSU for the stand but it was too conservative for my liking.

Hated the third and 7 call. Why? When have we completed that this year? Such a low % throw on third down! Hated it hated it.
