Colgate Postgame

Mentioning Dino sums it up. Red is like Dino last year, playing out the string before the inevitable and the University moves on

That is what I fear and that is sort of how it feels.

So we have a coaching issue potentially? You'd think, when hiring a coach for D1 and you're a power 5 team, you'd want the absolute best coach available. Was Red really the best coach available in the nation when the AD was looking for a coach? If not...why did he settle? Hire the best person for the job period. The recent buzz we are getting with recruits will die just as quickly as it came if we keep playing like this and barely beating teams that these top HS kids have never even heard of.

You know why. We all do.

If Red isn't the guy, we have another couple years to find out for sure. It is what it is.

This is a team of role players. Which would be fine if one of these 2 things were true:

We also had a "star". Someone with the skill and will to carry the team in crunch time. Doesn’t have to be a Carmelo, a Tyus Battle would do.

Or

We played hard nosed, bulldog, dirty defense. Grind the other team down, and ride whoever has the hot hand.

But we have neither.

This is a dumb post.
Really intended as a setup to a discussion point of... is Red the problem? If the answer to my original post is yes, as you and others seem to think (myself included) it lends me to believe that we actually have a good group of players and our coach sucks and shouldn't have gotten the job in the first place. I could have just led with that but wanted to pose the question to get others opinions without influencing theirs by starting the "Red sucks " chants

The thing I don't understand about tonight's game is we went on a nice run to get up 13 and there was some bizarre mass substitution. Did he learn anything last year? Thirteen points is nothing when your team is struggling on defense. Keep the guys who built the lead in the game.

Colgate was better coached tonight, but they don't have Syracuse's talent. I couldn't believe how bad the defense was tonight and that's coaching and motivation.
The had a very good guard and a beefy unathletic center and took us to the final bell.

I have to see what a great guard alone would do to us.

^^^^^Bingo

I'm not sure what is going on. Last year Red did a great job winning 20 with a dysfunctional team.
However we did have one player who for the most part has been vilified on this board. At this point its obvious to me that he single handedly carried SU last year. Probably won 6 or 7 games with him maybe more that won't happen this year without his skills. Everyone wanted a true point G. Well Carlos isn't the answer as he is simply too small and lacks the athleticism to compete at this level.
Replace him with Judah and tonight and last week are both easy wins. Bottom line. Judah was an elite player and this year we have a team filled with marginal talent that lacks the one guy to make them better. That one guy was Judah.
Unless I'm really missing something we are in serious trouble.
This team doesn't have one go to player. Not Eddie, JJ, or Bell. All good players but not even close to elite. Donnie is raw, Carlos is too small, Taylor is Marginal, cuffe, no, Choppa has zero D, Davis is a 7th kid on most ACC teams and Petar is 8th. We lack talent and coaching. We are at best a middle of the pac team. At worst it's going to be really ugly.

I have pretty much found this with any team I have followed closely (Raptors in the NBA) and Syracuse.

When things are seemingly not going as expected for the team, a scoring point guard who is not always pass first and has flaws, gets rammed harder than normal. Once that person is out of town, the grass is typically not greener.

I’m 100 percent confident that if Red doesn’t work then we will absolutely go outside the program and have a national search.

I was told we did do a national search and Red was our top choice still.

That’s fair. I admittedly have a much lower opinion of coaches in general than most. You can’t compare someone just starting out with three transcendent guys. There are far more flops than successes. Hopefully Red turns out to be the latter.

I just don't see what Mike Waters saw when he told the guys here we'd be good.

This is just not a talented team. It was obvious when we were being scolded in the offseason, we were getting second tier portal guys.

The only way it was going to work is if Bell and JJ made the leap and they look like the EXACT same players.

Hoping for Red's sake this doesn't meltdown.
I know Waters is beloved in Syracuse but I dont think he really has a high level of basketball knowledge. He can cover a local team well and tell stories with the access he has but I've never thought he makes many great points about the game. Oh well, flame on.

I'm watching Duke/Kentucky right now. Kentucky had 100% roster turnover and they look so much better than Syracuse and they are playing a very good Duke team. The difference? Kentucky hired an experienced and successful head coach.
And every single player is a five star or top ten portal recruit.

Unskilled eruos aren't as fun when the team isn't very good.

A player like Mintz has a low ceiling/high floor for college basketball imo.

I don’t see a player like that working on a VERY good team these days. But he’s good enough so the team isn’t a disaster

I've mentioned this about a half dozen times now but it bears repeating. There was no national search, Red was hired to Keep JB from going thermonuclear/scorched earth when he was forced out. Anyone who believes JB willingly retired and Red was hired after an exhaustive search is woefully uninformed.
