That’s fair. I admittedly have a much lower opinion of coaches in general than most. You can’t compare someone just starting out with three transcendent guys. There are far more flops than successes. Hopefully Red turns out to be the latter.
Or here is another one...if Red is the coach of Duke, UNC, Kansas, ect...how much worse would they be?

I was told we did do a national search and Red was our top choice still.
I doubt how serious a national search was if it was truly done. Everything was pretty much a formality that Red would get the first shot.

I'm watching Duke/Kentucky right now. Kentucky had 100% roster turnover and they look so much better than Syracuse and they are playing a very good Duke team. The difference? Kentucky hired an experienced and successful head coach.
They also have Mark Fox on their bench, which is huge. Experienced HC at the at high major level.

You'd drop Bill Self in the same class as those other two?

I know Waters is beloved in Syracuse but I dont think he really has a high level of basketball knowledge. He can cover a local team well and tell stories with the access he has but I've never thought he makes many great points about the game. Oh well, flame on.

I can relate this more to hockey where analysts overreact to trade deadline acquisitions or offseason acquisitions (or lack of them) to determine who is the best. Its flawed.

Some analysts rely heavily on "change" and "roster additions" to view how teams have changed -- basically give them new toys to see, and they think things are great. I assume thats part of the problem with Waters.

I just meant if you take those teams current rosters, so for example Hunter Dickenson and all the other current Kansas players, and Red was the coach instead if Bill Self, how much worse would they be than they are now? Could Red take a roster like Duke or KU and keep it as a top 10 team?

I've mentioned this about a half dozen times now but it bears repeating. There was no national search, Red was hired to Keep JB from going thermonuclear/scorched earth when he was forced out. Anyone who believes JB willingly retired and Red was hired after an exhaustive search is woefully uninformed.

I just don't understand why people are trying to pretend that this was NOT the case and that Wildhack somehow bungled the hire.

Unfortunately I do. Red won't survive a non tourney season much less .500 or worse. The natives are beyond restless and 4 straight years of no tourney isn't gonna fly.

Red won 20 games last year. Lets see how the season goes. The actual upside is we have a big and a guard with a ton of ceiling to hit (agree a few others out there aren't up to snuff).

Assuming Kiyan is coming Red ain't going.

I wish we could find out

So. That was not good and it’s clear this team is bad defensively.

Carlos was a turnstile for the second consecutive game, and he’s not getting the ball to players where they can score.

He’s problem #1. It’s affecting both ends of the floor.

How the hell was he all defensive team in the CAA. He can’t guard anyone.

We need to trim the rotation. That might help get players familiar with themselves.

But boy, this looks like a disaster.

Kiyan or any single recruit is NOT a reason to keep a coach with this resume. Even if we had the #1 class coming in I don’t trust red to get them to gel and approach their potential.

Do a national search for a proven coach who knows how to lead and teach. Results - and NIL - will follow.

You can't get rid of Red this year with the recruiting class he has coming in. You can make him fire an assistant or hire a consultant.

Haven't read the first 6 pages but I will. Just got home from the game.

Positives:
- We won
- Moore made some nice plays. Definitely doesn't lack confidence.
- +9 rebounding
- 19 assists, that's actually a ton in college ball
- Only 7 turnovers, that's actually extremely low in college ball
- Bell had 5 rebounds
- I caught a shirt in the t-shirt toss

Negatives:
- The t-shirt is only medium
- Winning the game by 2 with a chance to lose at the buzzer
- Too many misses in the paint
- Only 8 FT attempts and missing 4 including 3 hugeeeee ones late
- Not stopping the guy with the ball (usually #3), repeatedly in the 2nd half. That's fundamental stuff and our execution there was an FF.
- Winning the game by 2 with a chance to lose at the buzzer
- Getting beat, over-pursuing on D (that is a thing), leaving shooters open. Way too frequently.
- When it was within 1 possession (and tied) late, our offense was extremely discouraging. No effective movement patterns. Few dribbles, pass back up top. Guys standing around. Thankfully Lampkin was able to convert a layup because there was absolutely nothing drawn up that I could see.
- Building a 13 point lead at the under 16 timeout and not holding it
- Winning the game by 2 with a chance to lose at the buzzer
- Freeman was non-existent in the 2nd half

Duke has three top 10 picks in The Athletic's mock draft today. Jon Scheyer or Wojo or any other guy on the Duke tree would have to try hard to screw that up. Same with Kansas. Red won 20 games last year, never know it reading this board.
