Colgate Postgame

No I mean mindset wise he's cooked because he's ok with being a sieve and having dudes run by him. He doesn't seem to have the drive to stop that. Even a bad defender will at least get physical and bump a guy instead of of just letting the drive by happen.
Do we have a dawg? I'm thinking we don't.

Moore.

But that's too much to put on his shoulders.

Maybe Davis.

I actually think Freeman could be but we're not going to use him that way.
Nope and nope and nope, neither freshman is ready to step up and Davis plays hard, but these guys won't follow him

Yeah I mean it’s all lining up. This year will be a disaster and I think the Kiyan/Saddiq commitments guarantee him 2025. But if 2025 doesn’t go well, it is pretty obvious we will clean house and go outside completely
If you surround them with JJ and Bell again then we'll be bad next year with them. We need good portal players to compete WITH good recruits.

It should be JJ. But, what the hell is going on with his defense? The dude is athletic, why can't he stay in front of ANYBODY?
Why should it be JJ? He's literally done nothing outside of high school that should lead anyone to believe this, let alone a P5 head coach.

I feel bad hammering him but he isn't that good.

It might be that they’re guarding each other. Just kidding. There were instances tonight where the defense looked good. Consistency is the problem. Our backcourt has a hard time guarding a chair. Blow by after blow by. What’s discouraging is no one comes to help. Our bigs don’t rotate at all. Donnie is not as good as Davis. He just floats around waiting to put up jumpers. Davis at least goes and gets the ball. I was pleased to see Choppa Play tonight. He has no fear and he can actually make a move off the dribble and pull up and shoot.
youre kidding but its true. They cant get bye anyone, so im sure their defense looks great against eachother.

I think he did plenty of bumping some from the side, others were from behind and that’s how he got his 5 fouls. Late reactions to moves.

I think we need to run things through Freeman more and let him be more of an alpha. He at least seems to care. JJ is just missing something. I dont get it but he's not the leader I expected. I thought his issue was playing with Judah but clearly that wasn't it. I was wrong.

I have said for months that JJ won’t be back next year

this could be the worse defensive team we have had, even when we played 2-3.

bell and moore struggle to move side to side. lampkin is cooked on P&R and doesn’t even have enough in him to move over a few steps and attempt to block (or be there already).

and to emphasize the points others have said, this is where a guy like judah mintz or quadir is missed. no guard can penetrate the paint when we need a bucket.

also why are we going under in every screen ?? and why didn’t we readjust.
That is impossible. I was specifically told told my eyes are wrong and that the numbers support that this is a stellar defensive team and I am completely wrong for worrying about it.

No way. I don’t think Freeman is even ready to play at this level. What does he do well to run things through him? He shouldn’t even be starting.

Why did he have to go internal?

He creates a size advantage and a mismatch if you leverage him more on the block. We did it once or twice with good results but abandoned it. We can’t have him hanging around just on the outside. But it requires set plays and a Desire to do that. I also thought his passing was good out of the top of the key when we got zoned in game one.

I’m not sure what the offense is designed to do it and how much of it is not having a PG vs other things.

100 percent. People don’t realize how much better the ACC is than the big east. Cuse isn’t playing DePaul anymore. And it’s not apples to apples when playing Colgate, but I laugh when people compare Cuse to Duke and Kentucky. I also think people forget how bad this team has been for a decade. A literal decade.

As far as this game goes, it’s simple it’s about toughness and defense. They better fix it or they will have some serious problems. This team needs to wake up and play how they are capable
There wasn’t Duke or UNC, but the Big East of 12-20 years ago had seasons where 9 teams were in the top 25 and 3 or 4 in the top 10. Outside of DePaul this league isn’t even close to that. We also used to destroy teams in November. I know you’re close to Red, but giving up 80 plus to Lemoyne and being in a 2 point game against the worst Colgate team in a decade can’t happen in the NET era. We are already behind even if we turn it around. As someone who hasn’t seen practice I wonder what they’re working on defensively. JJ was terrible last year and somehow he looks even worse this year on that end. Sit his ass on the bench for Moore if that’s what we are going to get.

JJ was on the All ACC Frosh team.

That’s not nothing.

And certainly not some sort of participation trophy.

The team was never going to be and will never be good defensively this year.

It’s been coming down the mountain clear as day.

I don’t care what happens in practice.

The construct of this team is such that it will just be a bad defensive team.

And we have no malcontents, real or perceived at the current moment, to blame in lieu of scrutinizing Red, but I’m sure that’s coming.

Agree, but at least try and not be a bonehead. Stopping the ball is something you learn in grade school. We can’t even do that. I saw our guys turn their head on a screen 3 possessions in a row. This is fundamental stuff we can’t even do out there. Don’t even get me started on Bell grabbing the rim late in the game. Even my wife was befuddled over that.

I've mentioned this about a half dozen times now but it bears repeating. There was no national search, Red was hired to Keep JB from going thermonuclear/scorched earth when he was forced out. Anyone who believes JB willingly retired and Red was hired after an exhaustive search is woefully uninformed.
JB wanted G-Mac. just saying ‍♂️. but the trade off would’ve been judah and quadir and bell leaving. which was too much to spare in the short term i guess.

Oh, to be clear, I’m 100% in agreement with you.

The blow bys + the lack of basic rotations is extremely concerning and if Red were not in the family, I think the scrutiny would be much higher.

I have no words for the Bell thing.

I'm semi-retired from questioning coaching decisions, but I just don't understand Freeman playing only 15 minutes, JJ only 23.

JJ, Freeman, Lampkin were on the floor when we built our biggest lead. Colgate calls timeout, we pull all 3, they go on a very quick 15-4 run. All that work to get the lead is instantly evaporated. I don't think Freeman ever saw the floor again.

I'd rather see the accelerated development of Freeman and Moore if we're going to be mediocre anyway.

Seems like Red is trying too hard to make this a deep team. Use the depth to figure out what's working on any given night, and then ride it out. Don't hockey line sub for the sake of it. This isn't AAU.

JW had to. I think you risk alienating a large amount of the former players if you go outside the JB tree. They always preached family for years…. Add the fact that there was no “obvious” outside candidate. It was JWs safest bet. If he went outside the Cuse circle and it flopped, he would have been fired.
Spot on. The issue is JB hung around way too long and we declined to a Mac level. SU basketball is in trouble.
