Colorado fires Karl Dorrell / hires Deion Sanders

Prime Time making moves at Colorado State. In full transpacareny, I was a huge doubter that he'd be able to have the same success at the P5 level as he had at Jackson State, but looks like he might be able to build something.

Also, love the part about making the recruit do snow angels. Just goes to show you actually can recruit to a cold weather climate.
I'm sure a lot of checks are being cut as well.

I saw a clip with Tim Brewster yelling at the the kids like it was first day of boot camp and just laughed. Maybe it works maybe it doesn't but he looked like a fool.

Sean Lewis probably went home that night scratching his head a little because that ain't him. That much I know. I get the good cop bad cop deal but in 2023 it was just embarrassing.

Brewster is an idiot.

I still think deion will have success as he will bring in a ton of talent

I only watched their last game so I could be wrong, but based off of that game his son is not a P5 QB. If I am right, it will be interesting to see what happens. Does he start his son and possibly cause friction?

Oh my kingdom for CUSE to make a splash hire like this. What it shows is if you hire someone with some pizzazz, clout, reputation, recruiting muscle, whatever you want to call it, the kids will come.

Can’t recruit at Syracuse? I’d bet Deion and his staff could.

And if he flames out, so what, the stadium is going to be packed for a couple of years and the program is going to be loaded with talent.

Looking at about 14 million annually to get it done. 7 mil to the head coach and 7 mil for assistants. I believe that’s what Nebraska’s package was +/-

Brewster is just the tight ends coach so pretty low on the totem pole. I think every staff needs a couple of hothead drill instructor types though. TE coach might be the perfect spot for that.

I think 100% he is going to start his son. That's a given. I thought his son was fairly highly recruited a few years ago?

yeah you are probably right. I just think it's so dumb

He can amass some decent talent but tough schedule next year with TCU and Matt Rhule led Nebraska as the non-conf.

Considering where he is starting from which is 100% total rebuild 5-6 wins next year would be a miracle

7 million to an unproven coach? Making him a top 15 paid coach without a single FBS win? I’d love to smoke whatever you are lol

He’s not proven? All he’s done is win as a player and as a coach. And he’s surrounding himself with proven staff. But this doesn’t just apply to Sanders. Can apply to any splash hire. Ruhle and Nebraska are killing it right now too.

Kids go play for coaches. Bringing in any big name with some clout will get kids through the door.

Yes, he's unproven as a FBS coach. Being a great player doesn't always translate to being a great coach. There are many examples of this throughout sports.

Hiring Tom Brady as SU's next head coach would be a splash hire. His Super Bowl rings aren't a guarantee that he'd be a good coach.

Sanders has been a head coach though and hasn’t been a failure at it.

True, but not at this level. I'm not saying that he'll be a failure, either. We'll just have to wait and see if he's in Saban's league in coaching as well as commercials.

Biggest thing is eye balls and national coverage on the program is the thing. Day before Deion was hired their program had 55k followers on Instagram. They are up to 308k followers now. Fans of Deion are now rooting for Colorado. Fans of his personality and knowledge of the game are now rooting for him. I truly wish at some point cuse goes this direction. Melo being the head coach of the bball team down the road is dream scenario

Success in the FCS is very different than FBS. Ruhle has actually won at 2 levels of the FBS, he earned his value. Sanders should win a couple FBS games before he gets pay comparable to the likes of Gundy, Ruhle, Harbaugh and Franklin. I’m not saying he would be a bad hire, just that 7 million (or even 5) is really over valuing what he has done to date.

On the flip side, I think Colorado knew what they have done in the past was not working. They tried top assistants from peers and bigger schools, typical head coaches from smaller non P5 programs etc. The standard operating procedure. They realized what they have done in the past was simply not working. Boulder while a great college destination for weed smoking, skiing/ outdoor type white suburbanites it simply isn't an attractive destination for top football talent and there isn't enough top local talent to sustain a serious program. You can't talk about the good old days of UC Boulder football anymore because these kids weren't even alive at that time. "Playing the remember when game is the worst form of conversation" (Tony Soprano)

So what did they do? They took a huge risk and went outside of the box and tried something different. This comes with a serious financial commitment and risk. Whether it works or not remains to be seen. Nobody really knows if it will but they are taking a HUGE shot. And for most that is considered commendable.

Once he proves himself then he will be out of our league. He has already shown he can recruit and hire good coaches. That’s more than half the battle of being a good FBS coach.

He will then be out of Colorado's league too, which is fine. It happens. I highly doubt anyone can win it all at Colorado and that is what Deion will be trying to do with his next move if he is successful in Boulder

Bingo. And one would argue the attention they're earning on a long dead/dormant program will pay dividends (including financial ones) elsewhere.

Like Patrick Ewing, Chris Mullin and even Juwan Hoard? How is that working out, there is a downside too. People love to gamble until they start losing

5-7 million is the going rate for a good coach now. Colorado is making a gamble that is already paying off. Instant cred. Big time recruits. People excited. Stadium will be sold out next season. Even if they're bad.

You guys can take the cautious wait and see approach but when he took the Jackson State job people laughed to and then he went 27-6. College job is a college job. Providing you can coach and motivate and have a good staff, there won't be a difference between levels; especially when he's bringing in major league recruits.

Yes, being a player doesn't mean you can coach, nobody ever said it did (even though most coaches have played), but when you're a winner you're a winner. The guy is an amazing motivator, will bring in top talent and has surrounded himself with A LOT of P5 coaches. I think he has 3 former head coaches on his staff, might be 4.

Some of you miss the point though, its really not about Deion. It's about making a splash hire. Going big. Generate some excitement. Syracuse will fire Dino next year and then we'll be kicking around Joe Morehead or Phil Montgomery, people who don't move the needle and will struggle to recruit, it'll be the same old same old.

Favor fortunes the bold

It can’t be worse than what we have right now as far as product on the court or marketability

It can't? Have you looked at Georgetown's record this year with Ewing on the bench?

There are FBS coaches that go from success to getting a different gig and being failures. There are plenty of FCS coaches with success at the FBS level. Temple was brilliant at doing this for awhile.
