Cooney

What ever happened to the shaky potatoes tracker?
It lives.

It's because we've seen it before. Cooney can get you close, but he won't push you over the top.

So that warrants this thread? Let's start a Malachi thread because he missed the easiest shot in basketball even though he hit a ton of shots to get the game close. Let's sh.it on Gbinije because he misses the front end of one-and-ones pretty much every time.

Don't care about the missed threes as much. It's more of the blown layups that he for some reason can't take even remotely under control. And also, the dumb basketball plays. Rushing with the ball in late game situations, throwing it away, etc. Those are routine plays you expect 5th year guys to make consistently and he just doesn't. I never question his guts or work ethic, but he has made some of the dumbest plays I have ever seen from an upperclassman throughout this year. I think for those reasons, I will not really miss TC that much which is hard for me to say because i have tried to support him for years. My patience has just run thin.

I've seen Cooney take a ton of big shots in the 2nd half over the last few years and i don't recall him ever making one and they're usually not close (I don't count hitting a 3 when we're done 5 and 20 seconds left a big shot). I'm talking a shot to put us or keep us in the lead at the end of a game. He plays hard, just not a clutch shooter. he was obviously not the biggest problem in this game.

Spuds McCooney must be a huge Dobie Gray fan, because even on that wide open look in OT, he managed to, "Drift Away" from the basket. No one in his face, so why didn't he shoot the ball straight up? I had no problem with G's pass because if he drives and gets fouled, our senior leader would've been at the dreaded FT line.

Look, the guy's logged a ton of minutes on some teams that are pretty limited. Even if it's guilt by association, he's going to take some heat. It is what it is.

His percentage taking those big shots is probably about the same as his overall three point shooting percentage.

Boeheim should get more blame than Cooney. The guards he has recruited the last 3 years have led to Cooney being the only option. The kid is a role player who plays superstar minutes. I actually feel bad for the kid.

Give him heat when it's deserved, not when he's as big a reason as any other player that we were even in the game to begin with.

Howard, okay, yeah but he's been unavailable for two games...but Joseph? I better stop right there before I say anything else about Kaleb, who seems like a very nice young man.
Yeah, I know. I'm just done with the G at point guard experiment and I wish JB was too

We've just had such crazy outliers. MCW and Ennis were big time hits. G's been very good. Nobody else has panned out yet.

I'm confident Howard will, but yeah certainly some big misses

You're thinking about this too rationally for how soon after the end of the game it is.

He took the final shot with a chance to win. We didn't win. Knee jerk reaction is that he blew it.

I think so too, that's why I tried to phrase it as "panned out yet." I'm excited about what I think Howard will become.

Why Howard/Joseph weren't given 10-12 minutes per game in the non-conference while Cooney was getting 38 mpg is why those guys are useless now. You can't throw them into the lion's den and expect results. They should have been fattening up in the layup games but we left Cooney in too long and now we are paying the price.

I think one lineup that should be tried is Howard at the 1, Mali at the 2 and G at the 3 but that would require TC sitting for s few minutes, so... back to the drawing board.
Stop thinking outside of the box. We can't try to improve the team what we did on November 13th is what we have to do the entire year.

Idk what some people expect. He hit 1 out of 2 down the stretch. He isn't Steph, and NBA players shoot a terrible percentage down the stretch of games anyway. The blame on Cooney is ridiculous. people want him to be Jimmer Fredette for us. He's not. People need realistic expectations. He played really well in the second half. So did Richardson, besides the missed free throw.

We blew the game at the line. Again. And we just get destroyed inside.
