Jackson was the primary backup to Nykeim, who was the primary slot guy last season. At first glance, he is a big dropoff from Nykeim.Reading the whole paragraph about SU, I am not surprised that Chestnut and Simmons were also mentioned. I am pleasantly surprised that Jackson got the nod over those two.
Last year he looked like he had the yips a little bit.Jackson was the primary backup to Nykeim, who was the primary slot guy last season. At first glance, he is a big dropoff from Nykeim.
Nykeim had 20 catches, averaged over 16 yards a catch and had 4 TDs.
Courtney had 10 catches for only 6.9 yards a catch and 0 TDs.
But I think Nykeim also played some outside WR, and that is where he got most of his yards and TDs.
Nykeim was listed at 5'7, 170 pounds.
Courtney is listed at 5'11, 185 pounds. He was listed at 173 pounds last season, where he was visibly pushed around and did not appear ready to play at this level. I think he has the experience and strength now to hold his own and expect him to be a big part of the offense. Hoping he can continue this level of play into the season.
The Babers system really needs a reliable slot guy to work well. If he can't do it, I think we have to play Taj a lot in the slot and I am not sure he can handle it full time all season long. He is just not that big of a guy (though he also appears much better positioned to do well at WR this season).
Looking forward to seeing what he can do tomorrow.
Yup. Could have a game where he gets 7-8 catches. That alone would put him in a good spot to have a productive year. I can see 25-30 catches and close to 400 yards from himThe comparison in number of catches (Nykeim for 20, Courtney for 10) makes little sense unless you adjust for number of opportunities. Courtney will easily surpass 20 if he is the starter at inside receiver.
I agree with both of you. I think Courtney has a higher ceiling than Nykeim. He has to play tough and be willing to take big hits on throws over the middle. But I think he can get a lot more yards after a catch than Nykeim. He got his yards out running the defense on sprint routes. Courtney is, I think, more agile and better at making people miss.Yup. Will you be offering up a breakdown of the practice for those not attending?I agree with both of you. I think Courtney has a higher ceiling than Nykeim. I am thinking he gets about 40 catches.
That might change if Taj gets a lot of PT in the slot, which I could see happening if someone emerges on the outside besides Queeley. It looks like Alford and Williams might both be ready, but it is hard to say watching tiny snippets from practice.
I think Taj is going to get around 80 catches, Queeley around 55-60. I see two more will getting in the range of 40. Could be Alford and Jackson (they seem the most likely). But Williams, Pena, Johnson, Cooper or Jones could break in there. Then there are all the talented true frosh competing….don’t see any of them playing right away with all the more veteran players in the mix. I am comforted by all the athletes we have at WR. Seems like we have a nice mix of size and speed. A couple of years ago, we had walk ons as our 5th and 6th WRs. Glad we are far from that now.
One of my top priorities for tomorrow is checking out how this young crop of WRs looks and trying to figure out who the 3rd, 4th and 5th guys are going to be…..
Devito was interviewed today. Said Wax was everywhere on defense, Jackson was having a great camp, and Howard, Adams, and Lutz were playing really well.
Gadsden was a big time player in FL and had a ton of legit offers including UCF. He should be able to play early. No idea if the others are at the same level or not but on paper, he should be capable. Alford was also a legit recruit. Both bigger guys too, which we need.Devito was interviewed today. I think Gadsden could make a big impact this year.

I know Dino has wanted to get bigger in the slot for years. I'm guessing a major part of the reason why Nykeim didn't return was he knew that his slot opportunities were going elsewhere to someone bigger this year Ala Jackson, Harris, Pena.Jackson was the primary backup to Nykeim, who was the primary slot guy last season. Yes I will….Will you be offering up a breakdown of the practice for those not attending?
Excellent. I look forward to it.Yes I will….
Always try not to get too amped every year but really can't wait to see these guys vs Ohio. Completely realize heartbreak could be ahead but for now still excited.
Yes I will….
I haven't seen an SU football play in person since what, that crazy OT game against Wake in late November of 2019.Will this be one of your “sorry, I only have a few minutes so it will be brief” 12 paragraph updates covering every detail or are you actually going to try this time.
