Dabo to the Texans?

These guys all want to win at the NFL level Saban tried it it didn't work out. Would have been alot different if they were smart enough to sign Brees. I don't care how much you love college there is nothing like the NFL. If he wins it all this year with Lawrence leaving this is the perfect time.
He could wait and follow Lawrence to the Jags. Not buying that either.

It's an interesting rumor. I always thought him leaving Clemson for Alabama would be a tough transition and he'd piss off a ton of Clemson fans. This is interesting because if he leaves for the NFL, there will still be plenty of broken hearts, but I think that would go over a lot better than leaving for Bama.

The way this year is gone, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if Saban has had all he can take, and is ready to go out on top. He puts in his 2 year (give or take) notice now so they can plan for his replacement. 2 years go by, Clemson is still winning with their new loved coach, and when Dabo leaves the NFL to take over 'Bama it's not a big deal because the Clemson job is taken.

I get it, but some guys just eat up the recruiting, donor meetings, coaches show on wed, power and respect over the players...you are the MAN! NOT LIKE THAT ON THE NFL...at mercy to the gm and owner as far as the draft and even playing time based on salaries. The college game is much more alluring and sexy and even more attended as far as fans in the big programs. Saban went to the wrong spot and he and the pro player will never see eye to eye. Most college coaches at big programs making big $$$ understand just how lucky and fortunate and taken care of they are and in the end, that's all that matters.

Most college coaches crash and burn when they get to the NFL. The only one who I can think of off the top of my head who has been successful in the NFL recently is Pete Carroll but he already had pro experience.

Houston is going to have a tough job filling that role at least with a big name quality candidate. No way Dabo takes it. If Dabo wants to go to the NFL there are much better options.

-You have a bad team in Houston with no 1st or 2nd round picks this year (they traded them to Miami already)

-JJ Watt is old and not the same player any more and is beloved in the city. You can't move him and you are stuck with his big contract.

-Watson is good and they just broke the bank for him, whatever coach they get is stuck with him long-term whether they like him or not (yes he played with Dabo but that was college this is the NFL)

I wouldn't expect a long line of big name coaches wanting to interview for that job any time soon. I think Houston is going to be looking at 2nd and 3rd tier candidates when they look to fill that role.

After a while the recruiting and kissing up to donors can get tiresome see Billy Donovan on the bball side. In the NFL you can just coach.

Great point and makes tons of sense. I missed that. The recruiting is incessant and such a strain and yes, agree about having to kiss up and sell. Also, recruiting never stops, always looking 2-3-4 years ahead and even 8th and 9th graders get offered. At the end of the day, the sport we all love and follow is a cess pool. it really is.

I hope he goes to Houston and stinks. Guy is almost as insufferable as Coach K. Almost

Lol, what are your problems with these 2 coaches? Interesting to find out. Also, if. These guys drive you that crazy and you hate them...then, who do you love and respect as college coaches?

Its true but with the train rolling along the way he has it, he is almost guaranteed to have a more talented team than every opponent until he gets to the playoff. The talent disparity is way closer in the pros.

Unless you’re the Jets ...

The only job I can envision Dabo leaving Clemson for is Alabama.

He's only leaving for Alabama.

He makes a great deal of money and doesn't have to do much to get it. He's recruiting at an elite level and is in the championship conversation every season. Why would he leave that for the NFL where he's taking over a team that isn't built to win anytime soon?

In my opinion, Dabo isn't going anywhere. He's not that foolish. Saban ran back to the college game in a heartbeat after facing the realization (at Miami) that he no longer had an overwhelmingly advantageous talent discrepancy. Just as Saban, Dabo has the luxury of fielding a team year in and year out with a huge talent advantage in the league his team plays in, as well as nationally. Additionally, as Saban, Dabo has an annual contract that bests many NFL coaches contracts, not to mention his endorsements. Clemson's facilities are also second to none as well and better than many in the NFL.

Why be the piss-boy in the NFL, when it's good to be the King! ;):)

Agreed -- he'd be foolish to make this move.

The argument against this is what has already been stated a number of times AND how many college coaches flamed out in the NFL after they had a great thing going ...then had to high tail it back to college. This isn't 1980, 1990, 2000, or 2010 anymore. You can make a fantastic living coaching college ball

The other side of this is that the power 5 coaches have all the staff in the world now to take pressures off recruiting

It seems to me that today's successful NFL head coaches were successful NFL assistant coaches

The Bad
Nick Saban
Chip Kelly
Steve Spurrier
Bobby Petrino
Dick MacPherson
Mike Riley
The Good
Jim Harbaugh
Pete Carroll
Jimmy Johnson

Wait for the shake

I'm not sold on Dabo leaving Clempson. Dude built a juggernaut there. Lots of roots in the ground there. He may use Bama to get that last insane level contract though.

Good list. I would add Tom Coughlin under “The Good”

Edit - Sorry, TC didn’t jump from BC to NFL HC so I know why he didn’t make the list.

Edit Part Deux - Thanks GreekFreak for correcting my correction.

This may be a dumb question but is coaching in the NFL more difficult? You don't have to worry about recruiting in the NFL. You need to be highly involved in the draft process but that is way different than flying all over the country recruiting

Actually he did. He was Head Coach of the Jaguars.

Thanks, I stand double corrected!

I knew he was an assistant at BC and in the NFL before he became a HC. Got my timeline screwed up.

Getting old stinks
