Darrell Gill Jr. in the portal

I felt that way about the NFL 10-15 years ago and just lost interest.

I don't have time on the weekend to watch 3 games on Sunday, then Sunday night, Monday night and Thursday night.

And 20-25 of the 50 man roster are new every year.

When it's 2 hours like basketball or soccer, sure, I'll binge, and watch highlights. That's why NBA and soccer are winning - manageable time to watch a game, high level of performance, great competition.

But at 3.5 to 4 hours, 6 times a week like the NFL requires of you to stay informed, I mean, I have a life. I have other interests. I don't have a gambling addiction. And who are half of these guys anyway? Am I right?
Yeah I would say roster turnover was a big reason why I’ve not been as interested in Pro sports as I used to be.

I think there is hope in the college game but yeah this is a mess right now. The only alternative though is long term binding contracts and those have some pretty big pitfalls as well.

Why even call these "college" teams and pretend academics are even a fraction of the equation?

These schools are now owners that pay (well actually the fans/boosters get stuck doing that) instead of being owners that gave scholorships/board.

The more question areas a team has heading into a new season, the fewer games they will win. Continuity matters, even in the portal era. Otherwise you use your whole summer camp teaching the basics to an entire new team. You pay a price for that.
I disagree

Don't forget we have

Johnson on the roster!

Ok. I think most RBs probably are - however, he was our bell cow back and was probably the best offensive player we had before the offense had no QB. My opinion.

He is a true sophomore and can get better - was a big recruit. And we are supposed to just be ok with it? Sorry.
I never said you had to be ok with it , you can feel how you feel. In my opinion he is replaceable and didn’t fit the scheme.

No I think it’s more of a money ball situation. Only so much to go around and we need to prioritize other positions.
It’s clear as well that they are prioritizing and building around those they see as leaders based on the high profile players that have announced they are leaving and those who have announced they are staying. I think there is real disappointment in how some of the older talented guys handled the situation with Steve getting hurt.

Gill was our #1 by default last year, but it reality was really a 3-4 in results. If he can get #1 money someplace then thats good for him. He needs to be bigger to beat press coverage, and we showed last year when the offense is working we can feed 3-4-5 guys which was more than anyteam in the country.

I don’t think losing your number one receiver at the P4 level is as common as you make it sound
Imagine it was similar to the Pena situation last year. Gill may have asked for more money and Fran refused. It’s also possible that Gill’s agent dangled his name with schools and Gill, nervous about Angeli’s return, decided to bolt for a better offer and a more secure landing spot.

Honestly, what the hell are we doing?

Between $15-25M per year on a roster that may or may not be good enough to compete for a bowl, let alone a conference title?

And people are arguing to spend MORE if we want to compete?

I just don’t get it. This whole system is a complete joke and should not sustain very much longer.

Well if he’s nervous about angelis return despite being able to see and talk to him, I can’t imagine any receiver of consequence is going to feel any differently

I hate this modern version of college sports. Part of what I loved was the recruiting battles and player development.

Our big NJ haul from Fran's 1st year is all gone. We can rationalize it as "they got the talk" "this is college football now" but we all were stoked for that haul and how we back in Jersey Baby! All gone...

And now Gill. Skinny, but fast and exciting as a freshman. I still remember his explosive TD catch and thinking how he could project as he grows and matures. Good kid, does all the right things and gets better every year. This is what it's all about and then boom... he's out.

I get this is what it is but man I don't like it.
