Defensive Scheme Question

As poor a job coaching today by Chuck as anything i have seen since the little train that could left the Hill. What the hell was he thinking

This is my major concern. As soon as I saw we were going to run a 3-4 i knew it was going to be a long day, and we probably don't have the rigth DC for the job. I know HCSS is saying the right things right now and falling on the sword for his assistant coach, the same he did for McDonald after PSU, but i'm not buying it for a second. He said on several occasions he wasn't going to interfere with his coordinators and was going to let them coach because that's what worked best for him. This is totally on Bullough imo.

I said before that with Davis being out it made his decision even more peculiar, and then you don't even use Luke as the ILB, instead going with a 5'11 freshman? I mean what in the ? First thing you need to do is stop the run up the middle. That looked like the last thing we were worried about. We were so unprepared for this option it was a total embarrassment. I actually thought we stood a chance looking ahead to this game because I thought we had the size up the middle with Crume and Bromley to stuff up the dive option, and then had the size on the ends with Welsh and Robinson. They may not get to the quarterback, but they are solid against the runs. Combine that with our mad blitzing style I assumed we were going to shooter our LBers into the gaps. On top of that we are still in some sort of 2 deep zone coverage. Totally set ourselves up for failure. These kids never had a chance, and that was the most disheartening part of today

Couldn't have said it better myself!

the problem I saw was that at times we were playing two defensive ends as defensive tackles and were getting crushed on double teams all game and it left a small linebacker to take on the lead blocks of a running back and a pulling guards.

the assignments are so much different in a 3-4 to a 4-3 defense and if in fact they practiced this scheme since preseason camps then what it shows is a lot of clueless coaches on defense. Good lord you put more bodies at the point of attack instead using less and smaller guys like we did.

if anything we did right yesterday was made the other teams D.C. smarter ON HOW NOT TO DEFEND THE TRIPLE OPTION

what was your thoughts on the same guys i listed last season when they were put in a position to succeed? did they magically get worse?
I think they're about the same...we didn't blow the doors off in 2012 either. I think we were like 80th in pass d.

i'm not sure if your serious or not? we didn't get blown out once last season, and our defense definitely didn't let anyone hang 50 on them.

Big difference between yards and points. D this year is light years behind last year

It was a coaching disaster Plain and simple. No one has run on SU all year. You can't switch you're entire scheme for any opponent. The players can't react instinctively as they normally would I'm the usual 4-3 scheme. The players had no chance at all.

Normally they play an attacking type defense and that's not what the did yesterday. They were confused on what they were suppose to do. That made them unable to make plays.

I think the first reactions to what transpired are frustration and anger. That arises out of the desire everyone has for the program to be moving forward and the hopes everyone harbors for the program to return to a level of respectability. Once the sense of hope is dashed with frustration and anger the finger pointing isn't far behind. Certainly there is plenty of blame to be assigned for those who wish to do so but that won't change anything for the better. I feel badly for the kids who were out there representing Syracuse University and giving all they had, early on, only to find that they had been ill prepared to compete and their efforts are often lost in all the post game blame pointing which goes on.

Sadly, as the defense discovered that they had been given an unfamiliar scheme which was utterly ineffective to stop what GT was doing, they found themselves frustrated, gassed, and worst of all, questioning the leadership ability of those people who had prepared them to play in this game. As the defense labored under humiliating conditions, the offense found itself having to compensate by taking risks which it normally would not have taken and when you witness your teammates being thrashed by the opposition and the panicked demeanor of the coaching staff, your performance is going to suffer as well.

I'm hoping that somehow that through some honest self appraisal by the coaching staff that they can make some changes and find out how a game plan from a strategic perspective which was so horribly ineffective could have been implemented. They may not have been destined to win yesterday but I have a hard time believing that the game should have ended up being a point a minute to nothing.

And finally, how much of a commitment is the University really going to make to restore the program to top 25 playing level? Allowing an outcome like Saturday is a step back in the wrong direction for Syracuse Football.

You're jumping around a bit here...we got smacked around through the air last year. We've been getting smacked again this year. Sat had little to do with the dbacks. But they've been bad (and were not very good last year).

Look I want us to get better. But we néed to be honest about the situation. Look we're not as bad as GRob...but the last 4 years were a bit of a mirage. I posted it before but I think under marrone we were something like 11-17 in conf (which wasn't that good to start with). We're barely competitive with middle teams.

Back to the point, a lot of problems is coaching. The scheme is horrible. But it's not all that...

Separate this game from all others - and throw it away. Tried a gimmick and failed. It's a mark against the coaches, sure - but that's like saying you think Indiana's Bball coaches can't coach offense after our D demolished them last year.

We have a weak secondary. The rest if the D is fairly stout. I expect good performances in all but the FSU game.

Offense is another story.
