Development in and Around Syracuse Discussion

Ugh, you're probably right. I think I started going to the I81 meetings in 2008 or so

They just started work on the I-81/I-481 interchange by Drivers Village. But they've got years of work ahead just to widen I-481 before they can even begin to think about the viaduct.

Right, the viaduct will be about last in the reconstruction

This is the same judge who has put the I81 overpass project on hold for the Save 81 group. It will be interesting to see what happens here and if the statue gets removed. The folks behind save the monument group include Nick Pirro and John DeFrancisco.

"Syracuse, N.Y. -- A local group that sued to stop Syracuse from removing the Columbus statue says it will appeal a recent court’s decision that would have paved the way for the city to move ahead with removing the monument.

On Tuesday, the Columbus Monument Corp. announced that it planned to file an appeal of the state Appellate Division’s decision that overturned State Supreme Court Judge Gerard Neri’s decision to block the city from removing the statue.

The appellate judges found that the group’s lawsuit was premature because the decision to remove the statue had not gone through all the administrative steps needed for approval.

The monument group said Tuesday that they found issues in that decision that need to be reviewed by the Court of Appeals, the state’s highest appeals court.

The monument group did not detail what it believes needs to be reviewed and it has not yet filed the appeal. The group declined to elaborate at this time.

The appellate division’s ruling was unanimous which makes it less likely for the Court of Appeals to pick up the case."

The writer is not wrong and Nick Paro is the absolute worst, he whored himself to Pilot and Destiny for a short term gain. In no way are the plans to put in the community grid going to change, just delayed to the detriment of the people that live here.

To the Editor:

"With regard to “Liverpool declares war on big trucks, sending rigs from Amazon and others around the crowded village” (July 31, 2023), I found myself on the brink of laughing as I read the story.

For about a decade, the present and former Salina town supervisors fought the Interstate 81 community grid because rerouting I-81 (in other words, giving I-81 through Salina a name change) would lead to the total failure and collapse of all the businesses in Salina, including the Pilot truck stop on Seventh North Street — in Liverpool. It was on behalf of the truck stop and other businesses that Nick Paro joined the Renew 81 lawsuit attempting to halt the I-81 viaduct project in court.

And yet now we are told that instead of being a business powerhouse at the Crossroads of New York State, Liverpool is a “residential village” whose residents wish to “maintain the quality of life” in the village by not having big, lumbering trucks going through their streets, and the same Nick Paro fighting in court to save a truck stop is joining with the mayor of Liverpool to support the rerouting of trucks. Granted, they would still reach the truck stop, but apparently Salina likes the truck stop more than the trucks.

Irony could not be more delicious."

The Blue Tusk got booted for this guy, what a shame. He owes a sht ton of money to multiple entities as described towards the end of the article including Sysco which I'm sure has put him on credit hold. The Taphouse is supposed to open the end of the month, I'm skeptical.

"The Taphouse, which will feature multiple craft beer lines and support local brewers, could open by the end of August, Mastropietro said this week. All permits have been secured, and some construction at the site at 165 Walton St. in the Center Armory building is still underway.

But Mastropietro’s forecast for the opening has been delayed since he first announced the Taphouse project in July 2021. For most of this year, he’s projected the opening to be just a few weeks or a month away. He’s often cited delays in getting permits along with bigger-than-expected construction issues.

As a sign of how long it’s taken, the Taphouse on Walton’s Facebook page still reads: “Coming to Armory Square Early 2022.”

He’s been short on cash. He asked a friend of mine if he would loan or find someone to loan cash without ownership. he does not want to have a partner or partners. That said Blue Tusk let itself go and the building was in dire need of an upgrade at the end.

I didn't know that about the Blue Tusk, the last time I was in there was about 6 months before they closed and the front of the house looked okay to me.

Mastropietro is about a quarter of a million in debt including owing state sales tax. I'm surprised he's able to keep his liquor license, I just don't see him opening anything until he pays off some of that debt. I understand why he wouldn't want a partner, too many complications come with that especially in the restaurant/bar business.

Behind the bar and kitchen were an abomination.

Mastropietro is also an ass. That’s why he can’t keep anyone.

And that article didn't even mention what he owes his former landlords...

The rest of his stores are already closed. This place shouldn't take too much longer. I thought Danny's Steaks would have been hit, but that went belly up ... and for good reason. The first time I went there it was a 45 minute wait for a cheesesteak that I had ordered ahead of time. I chalked it up to being new, but when I went back a month or so later, it was still a disaster. And that was the last time. I used to work a sandwich shop in Boston and I made cheesesteaks to order in 4-6 minutes.

I get that restaurants are generally failures, but as I get older I think more of it is that people who shouldn't be running businesses are running restaurants. I don't know Mark Bullis well, other than a handful of conversations, but his spots tend to stick around and are successful.

From the article:
“Look, it’s been tough the past few years,” he said. “But we’ve got a top team, good people working on this.”

$150k isn't a ton of money, but it's not bad for a couple of months of closures.

Danny's food was better than average (if not exceptional), but the service was atrocious. The second time I suffered through a 25-minute lunch hour wait for a cheesesteak was my last.

Decir Algo had some slammin tacos, though, it'll be missed.

As for the old Tusk location, I'll believe it when I see it. And predict headwinds.

These NYC-based landlords are getting what they deserve. Booting out longtime commercial tenants in search of higher rents and instead ending up with non-revenue producing spaces.

Usually these land bank home renovations are done in the cheapest way possible. Lots of gray paint and blah finishes. This was actually really well done, in my opinion.

Looks like it's already a pending sale:

Very nice, even added some pops of color instead of just neutral blah colors assuming an owner would spend the money to totally repaint.

I like some of the color choices, but there's a special place in hell for someone who paints over the wood newel post.

Meh I don’t feel that newel posts need to be white. I do not love painted brick a lot of the time though.
