As of Jan 1st NY is going all electric on new construction and home builds. Bye bye natural gas and propane.

FWIW: I have heard from 3-4 people that a certain fruit company is eyeing Syracuse once Micron is nearing production. One was a client whose son would be near those types of discussions. Who knows, but just to be considered.

Another option being developed is the coal direct chemical looping process using coal that releases minimal carbon pollution. It is chemically processed in a closed system. The energy is released generating heat. The waste can be returned to the coal mines from whence it came.

Ohio State University is leading the way on this process and research. Anyway, if it ends up working it will benefit many nations who may lack resources for nuclear or whom nobody wants to have nuclear generation to avoid further development of weapons grade materials.

There are no true solutions, only tradeoffs. We all choose which tradeoffs we will accept and refuse to accept.

Yeah, but - the plurality (49%) of electricity used by NYS comes from fossil fuels anyway.

So is this really doing anything, other than those fossil fuels being used indirectly instead of directly by the consumers?

We need to get working on the big plant in Oswego and in the meantime build some Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). Plus electrical grids need to be upgraded.

The biggest issue with nuclear is the government constantly changes regulations and construction costs balloon and get delayed.

I just bought a mid size portable battery with solar panels to keep my fridge, freezer, wifi and lights running in event of a brownout. BTW you can still get 30% tax credit back on certain models.

If you have kids who aren't soft, encourage them to get into anything involved with power generation, electrical grid design and repair or as an electrician.

Anyways, I agree on nuclear. At this point, it is the only thing that can scale To needs. Maybe fusion will someday be a reality and if a way is found to efficiently produce hydrogen, fuel cells could be a component.

The main problem is our political system won’t allow for strategic, long term solutions. trump just shut down manor solar and wind farm projects that are nearly complete. Dumbass. Nuclear construction has its own opposition and it takes a decade to build a large plant. Modular may help but the government needs to pave the way using science and logic.

I had a forced air furnace and trust me, it uses electricity and when we had a power outage… no heat. That happens now.

Battery backup might help prevent people from freezing some day.

As we move from fossil fuels to other ways to generate heat, the grid will need to be fortified. That’s part of the plan.

Extreme weather is not a governor’s fault.

Not intended to start a political fight, but while a governor, president, legislator, or local government officials, emergency responders, etc., cannot be held to control the weather, lunatic accusations excepted, the response to the weather and meeting the needs of the people is solely at their feet, for good or ill. And they should be rewarded for good or ill.

Playing politics in an emergency should be a felony on top of any other crimes and should carry tort penalties, too. I like Arizona's idiot driver law. The desert is subject to flash floods, if an idiot drives into a wash when it has been blocked, they will do anything they can to rescue an idiot driver but the idiot driver will pay all expenses. It only takes four inches of moving water to move a Humvee.
