Syracuse.com through FOIL recently released some meeting notes about the gondola but more interestingly this provided insight into the larger vision for the fairgrounds. It's worth a look if you're into that sort of thing. I'll say this: the gondola may seem frivolous at face value but if it ends up as part of a larger vision then it can definitely work as a complementary amenity. All the typical whining by media and local pols is short sighted because it may hamper fair funding in future state budget cycles. There's a lot more that they want to do and I think the only mistake was fast tracking the bigger projects first instead of addressing the litany of other improvements that would be more readily appreciated by the public.

Yeah it is. Had heard a while ago that they were backing out, but was still holding out hope something could be worked out. Not sure there is another employer locally who could take their spot there.

She and Dolgon. Who were the primary local advocates for the downtown stadium/arena. But, the SU powers--specifically the new administration--were not on board with being just a tenant. and without the Orange, that project was not getting off the ground.

Can't blame either side for wanting a little more out of the deal. Syracuse uses the Dome for at least five teams and several other events, they need some level of control based on the inventory of games/events they need to schedule. The County wants to bring in additional revenue with additional events which would likely run into scheduling conflicts with a very busy SU schedule. No easy answer, especially with the locations they have looked at.

Walked by here last night and it looks really cool inside. Love that the floor is the former basketball floor for the Syracuse Nats, even having the center court piece hanging up in the bar. Will definitely check it out next time I'm in town.

Update: They settled with NYState, paid a $450,00 fine, and promised to change their method of doing business.

I flashed on "Lie down with dogs, get up with fleas." There are some people you just do not want to do business with. Not saying Aspen absolutely fits that mold, but. . .the bottom line isn't always the bottom line.

Ok but again, nobody is talking about doing business with them. We are talking about their employees doing business with local businesses in downtown Syracuse, which would be a huge positive for the area.

I would respond that our standards have deteriorated considerably. Maybe distorted through these not-so-young eyes.

Yeah my fiance and I met with the Genesee Grande last week, owned by the same owner as Hotel Skyler. We were told that Hotel Skyler would be joining Hilton's new Tapestry Collection, and I believe he said it was going to be the first in the world to operate under this new collection.

Didn't even realize it had converted to a hotel. Needed a quick room last week and it popped up as Coming Soon on Hilton.com. Looks really nice and rates aren't terribly high.
