Devin Leary injury updates (Out for season)

Dude dislocated a shoulder, that’s exactly the mechanism of injury how that injury occurs, it may have self reduced when he hit the ground but with the sprain involved with the ligaments stretched he’s gone this week would be my take and likely weeks longer til a bowl game

That is a perfect example.

It made no sense that they didn't just run their all world running back behind their offensive line on us.

But you don't do that with Lawrence.

With the backup QB though, yeah, you do.
NC State don’t have an all world RB or even a good one. They don’t run well with or without Leary. They have a very, very good D and a less than average O with Leary.

The dudes they had on offense that made them and Leary click the past two years are in the league.

They have not replaced those dudes with the same pedigree, which is why they struggle

Here's my lurking fear - since the injuries to Lockett and Thompson, there's not a whole lot we'll be able to do to stop a team that makes an effort to run against us. Regardless of the excellence of their talent. I think it'll give us a hard time.

Part of what I'm banking on is that all these coaches we face with shiny quarterbacks are like "Me quarterback shiny! Dead pig go in air! Lots!" (In this scenario, these coaches talk like cavemen for... reasons, I guess. I digest...) Because they can't help themselves. Some of these guys punt from their opponent's 35 because they're all concussed and that factors into their decision making!

Now, Doeren seems like a dweeb, but he's not an idiot, and Chip's probably right - NC State will attack us with the run regardless.

I'm just saying. Weird stuff can happen on the football field. It wouldn't be totally shocking to me if the backup plays, they go run heavy, and we really struggle with it. Maybe more than we would have struggled with Leary.

Either we beat NC State, or, they will make what AJ Dillon and BC did to us, look like Neville Chamberlain level appeasement.

Those DL injuries will really show against Clemson and ND (I’m thinking more so against ND). I think it doesn’t look as bad against ncst if they’re going to be one dimensional.

I feel like NCST is going to attack the edges and the back 8 will need to keep with the trend of open field tackling. Will need a big day from the safeties and having carter back will be big.

I remember SU playing Ohio St. in 92 and their QB, Kirk something, was injured (shoulder I believe) the game before and Coach P and staff really went to stuff the run because of that. Ohio St. opened the game passing and they crushed the Cuse 35 to 12 or something like that. SU could never adjust or get their barring's.

Yeah. I sometimes wonder whatever happened to that Kirk guy.

I really hope we have McDonald back.

Yeah. Not to mention two straight weeks of major wear and tear on their D and coming into an extremely raucous environment vs a program starving for relevance. We shouldn't lose this game even if it's gotta be a 17-13 kind of game. Would be a huge missed opportunity if we don't get it done vs a backup QB.
Does the raucous environment affect the other team's D much? Or were you just referring to their team overall?

Sucks for the kid, but he wasn’t playing nearly as good this year as he did last.

I get it. A reasonable fear. I guess I just don’t think teams who are not good at running will find success against us even with our depth issues inside.

We have a really solid scheme and 2/3 of maybe the best LB corp in the ACC. We’ve not been bad against the run, generally this year. I think it’s because we disguise things pretty well. It messes up protection and running lanes.

It’s possible they expose a weakness we haven’t shown with a strength they don’t seem to have while abandoning the threat of a real passing game. To your point, football is weird. But I’d say this turn of events benefits us.

I get what you're saying, but I just don't agree. Leary being out makes NCSU one dimensional. It enables us to stack the box to bolster a weak DL with the LB and S. I feel very comfortable with the attacking 3-3-5 scheme we have to be able to do that.

Our true weakness is a spread / air raid style pass offense with a stout OL (Purdue) where we have to cover, spy the RB, and cannot create a lot of push. Even AA CBs can only cover effectively for about 5-7 seconds. In this scenario we get gashed by the run or the pass because the DL simply cannot hold their own and there is limited help from the LB/DBs.
You’ve been doing your homework, solid post.
