Devito

Here's the thing though... DeVito was moving the ball pretty well before he was taken out.

He played very poorly down the stretch. But it's not impossible to think that if we hadn't given Shrader those three series and just hung with DeVito that we would have moved the ball more.

Maybe we break through for some scores and take control of the game, and the late yips don't become a factor.

Either way, at this point, there's bad juju around DeVito. There just is. Kind of like when we had to look to Paulus to make plays late in games.

IMO, we are limited with TD. The announcers were specifically calling out his locking in. Can you win with him? Sure. Should you bet on it? IMO, no.

I’d rather bank on GS changing our fortunes rather than TD. TD is a known quantity. I, personally, am done holding out hope that he levels up.

I think TD is easier to defend the longer the game goes on.

But he can throw a football into a garbage can from 60 yards away?
Once a game. Coupled with numerous bad throws.
It was not the OL they gave him time but nobody but Alabama’s qb going to have 10 sec each play.
I’ve come to expect one long pass for 7 each game from TD and then nothing.
People can keep making excuses for him but he is not the answer. Does not go through his reads quickly if at all, holds the ball and panics.
Not sure how Sharder will do but it’s time he gets all the snaps with the ones.
I will say the play calling was pure garbage. The refusal to throw to the TE horrible. Failure to give Alford and gadson some play complete failure.
However even if all those things fixed TD is still not the answer.

both will play again next week in the " practice game" vs albany
I hope not. We waist giving a any more reps to do. Versus an fcs he will do okay and then dB will given him more run than Sharder with the ones and then he will be a train wreck against Liberty.

The bottom line is your starting quarterback put up only seven points. That’s the only reason you need to make a change. Maybe the change should be Lamson and not Shrader.

Lamson? You know I love ya, but I doubt there are many or even any P5 HCs who would think that way. DB leaned on his experienced QB (all the "married to Devito" theories are complete nonsense) thinking (hoping more likely) that he had developed. His next viable option is a QB who started in the SEC as a freshman. He would be an idiot to roll out a true freshman without playing out Shrader to see what he has.

I don't think he is married to TD but that might change after next game. TD shouldn't start vs Albany and he shouldn't get anything more than token reps. Against Liberty he shouldn't get anything more than situational action. If TD is getting major reps vs Albany and starts vs Liberty, no one will be able to deny the marriage.

I'm with you on a lot of this.

I look at TDs face during game action and he always stunned like he’s unsure what is going on. He’s a tool guy with a high end skill but he’s not a gamer. If a play breaks down he is lost.
The sample size is large enough (2019, much of 2020, and 2 games so far in 2021). When a play breaks down TD either runs out of bounds, throws out of bounds, or takes a sack.

I played organized sports from when I was 8 until year 3 of college, in football, baseball, basketball, cross country and track & field. Not all of those sports are the same, but in all of those sports, there are "gamers" and there are "guys who play". Gamers find ways to win. "Guys who play" fill out the roster, but they are not the guys who make plays when it matters. I'm a short guy, not very big (back then), but I was fast as hell, and even tougher. I was that guy who got punched in the nose and then punched the other guy back. I would elbow my own teammate in order to win a race. Tommy has none of that toughness. He's a freaking crybaby, he panics and unless it's "laboratory conditions", he just isn't very good. Babers sucks as a coach. This season is over right now. So is Babers' tenure. So much promise, and it's back to shtt.
This “gamers” thing is so dumb

I am far from TD's biggest fan but our WR unit is unacceptable. Look at our deep threats under Dino:

2016 6'2 202 AET
2017 6'2 209 Ish
2018 6'5 213 Custis
2019 6'1 191 Trishton
2020 6'2 172 Taj
2021 6'2 180 Taj

We went from big bodied guys who could go up and grab the ball to small bodied guys who are better at YAC. I think TD is a problem but the lack of a true deep threat the last 3 seasons has been a big factor as well.

Yeah ok Jim Thorpe

clown take

devito can’t catch for guys when he puts it on their hands or get open or make the right read for the receiver

the wrs are a much bigger issue

When he only really throws to one wr it’s his own fault.
He locks in on one guy.
How do we know how the other guys play TD never throws them the ball unless it’s the play call.
Never goes through his progressions. Waits until they are completely open until he throws the ball.
All I heard was that it was the OL fault he was awful. Now they are better so now it’s all on the wr unit.
The main and consistent problem is TD.
He should not see the field again.
Time to move on and see what others can do when they get full reps with the ones and game plan in designed for their skill set.

My mask I wore at the Dome yesterday got more separation from my face then any Syracuse wide receiver has gotten from an opposing db in the last three years. I get it that TD has his faults. So will Schrader once he gets time. The biggest issue is the Syracuse wide receivers playing right now are not P5 quality wide outs. I won't mention names but one guy drops lots of passes at very important times in the game but is never hesitant to show his disdain for the quarterback(s) He did it to Schrader yesterday too. One guy should not be on the field. Another guy never knows where the ball is. Last season one pass hit him right in the helmet. He had no clue where the ball was. Another guy always seems to run the wrong route. He's in the area but never where the ball is thrown (coincidence? Always the qb's fault??) My season tickets are six rows up right behind the Syracuse bench . There are several freshman/red shirt freshman who actually look like P5 receivers. It's way past the time to give them a shot. No quarterback is going to be successful with the current receivers playing. Oh and by the way get the tight end involved in the offense!!!!!!!

Unfortunately your probably right , I really think schrader needs to just play the damn game and find his relationship with the receivers in a game situation. Trust me I was like o crap I had him all wrong on that first drive I was bummed and then when he made that 3rd down scramble and although he missed those deep balls they were great decisions and reads. After the end of that 2nd quarter I said to myself o crap I know most don’t see it but I do see the dungey in him he just needs to figure it out in game time situations . Tommy has a great arm but mentally he’s just not cut for d1 ball. I was at the game, I thought schrader was incredibly relaxed behind center. The line continually broke down on him.
Completely agree. Shrader seemed composed but rusty. He threw routes that Tommy never throws and put the ball out there giving our receivers a chance. I felt like I didn’t know what would happen next play while I do know what Tommy’s next play will typically be.

you tell me where he made a mistake before the 4th quarter?

he completed passes to 7 different guys.

Thats not in question. We can see the upside. We know TD’s flaws. He’s not getting better. It doesn’t mean Shrader is better but I’m willing to watch Shrader develop even if we are losing. He’s a soph. We have him for more years.
Great point. Play the younger guys

TD WOULD excel vs. the likes of Albany and Our Sisters of the Poor. But not against bigger and better teams with a solid pass rush and pass coverage. He has proven that. Time to move on……

I agree. Dino’s decision on when to play Shrader was mind blowing. My sense is Dino has zero in game feel. Guy is lost once a game starts.

No they aren't. Tommy isn’t the answer. Its been 5 years, private coaches, ect... the kid simply is what he is. Hes like Joe G. Great kid with one superior skill who should be playing at one level lower

Clearly we were watching different games.

we will never win with TD against a p5. Not sure we will win with one of the other qbs but at least I will not know the outcome before the game begins.
Nonsense

and again tell me one mistake, one bad decision, one target that wasn’t the right one before the fourth quarter

I would reverse the order - takes a sack or runs out of bounds is more likely than him throwing it away. That's been a big part of the problem.

You don’t get it clearly. Devito came in highly touted, while we were Dungeys best offer. When watching Dungey play he made gutty plays, and had a knack for putting his team on his back and gutting out runs and throws etc. even when it meant putting his body on the line, that’s a GAMER. Devito is the opposite. He has no feel for anything. Just a fact. Watched him play the same way for 5 years
