Did SU go balls to the wall after Kevin Huerter...

That's interesting, you know that with absolute certainty that JB is instructing him not to run? I usually see JB after we get a rebound do something with his arms/hands as to imply "let's go!" I imagine JB may do this as he knows if we could somehow get a quick/good opportunity at a bucket that would be a good thing, considering how mundane our offense generally is in the half court. Frank, however, can't really push the ball from what I've seen, and when he gets sped up, his adequate at best handle, gets more sloppy and is right there for the taking. Additionally, if the two guys you cite can't make a simple outlet pass at this level, I don't what to say. I do know that middle schooler's can learn how to do this after just a day or two of gym class. Of course, this is just my assessment/opinion.

The pointing to himself comment when he makes a mistake is comical. It's so frigging obvious that he did so, and it being completely on him, I have no idea why he does it. No one needs him to point it out as his teammates, along with everyone watching is like, "no s!?t Sherlock!" It's about as obvious and silly as the Dome's PA guy who apparently feels the needs to announce the score, even though everyone has a pair of eyes and can view the numerous scoreboards that are in the building.
This may be a bow to the Garden, where John X. Condon (and his successor) have been doing that since at least the early '80's. "Basket by Pearl Washington. Syracuse leads 37-32."

I'm not sure if I'm alone on this one by why the focus on Huerter. I mean he is not as good as Battle and would be a defensive liability. He can shoot and I get that and he did that against us this year which is probably part of it. If we somehow could have had him that would have been great but if I'm going back over the last 5-6 years to pick out missed opportunities I don't know he would be near the top of the list.

It's not supposedly. We wanted him. he wanted us. We didn't have a ship to give him and wanted him to go prep a year. He wanted to go to college and chose Maryland. A short time later, we got a ship back.
I followed this very closely. This is correct. My frustration with the whole Huerter situation is JB’s inability to see the writing on the wall or to envision what was going to happen at the end of 2015-16 (I believe the assistants saw it but couldn’t convince JB). I could see it myself at the time. The staff assumed they were going to get a scholarship back on appeal, but the ruling didn’t come until Nov (KH committed to MD in Sept). Instead of rolling the dice and assuming it would happen, the staff (or JB) hesitated and only offered KH for 2017 with a year of prep.

But more importantly, they made the incorrect assumption that in 2016-17 their guards would be Mali, Tyus, Kaleb and Frank. Which ended up being very wrong. They should have seen that either Mali (as a top 25 player) would turn pro or Frank or Kaleb would transfer (in fact both of those things actually happened). only one of Howard or Joseph was going to get a lot of playing time in ‘15-16 because MG and Cooney were the ensconced starters at the guard spots. If Hop has been in charge I think he would have rolled the dice with KH and assumed scholarship issues would work themselves out at the end of the season. But JB is more conservative when it comes to roster management issues, imo.

One thing that is not being said here though is that JB supposedly thought that Huerter needed a year to prep because he wasn't anywhere near ready to play at the ACC level. I had heard his evaluation of Huerter was as a kid who could play at SU in his 3rd/4th years AFTER a year of prep.

Maybe he believed that, maybe he was hoping to convince Huerter.

Yes I know with certainty. Although nothing is all or nothing.

JB blew this one for sure.

I've followed Huerter's career since he was in 7th grade. He was always a nice player but no one thought he was going to become the player that he developed into.

Here is an interesting thread on the George Washington fan forum which shows how quickly Huerter went from getting mid major offers to high major.

I don't quite understand the fascination with upstate NY but this kid looks ok. Skinny (shocking) but maybe he starts to fill out. Looks like a potential combo guard. Mid-low major offers so far- including Davidson. Helped team beat perennial power Mount Vernon for Class AA chip (albeit an extremely young and small MV team). Winners are good.

Here is a post from Francis from 4/15/15 that shows the same thing. Huerter blew up fast and we weren't in a position to make him an offer.

From Francis:
Syracuse bball source on that comes from here that I read last night.Boo Williams EYBL: Day 3 Notebook
Hopefully they gave proper credit.

Anyway, Huerter's team won the NY state chip last month and he has several A-10/New Big East teams interested. I think Xavier offered and Creighton is suppose to next. Solid player, but not somebody with our tight scholarship limit that I see us being seriously involved with.

And this is from Sept 2015. Right before his senior year of HS when he visited Maryland and basically verballed on the spot. He had already visited Villanova and cancelled plans to visit Michigan and Notre Dame.

He blew up with the City Rocks over the summer when he lead them to Peach Jam.

I was just wondering how this balls to the wall expression came about? Seems like some sorta porno or something.

Aviation term.

The throttle in a fighter plane has a ball shaped grip. For maximum speed, you push the throttle all the way forward to the firewall ... "Balls to the wall".

Similar to "Pedal to the metal".

Very murky. Well played. So instructed specifically not to run because of scheme or instructed not to run because of his limitations in not being able to push the rock adequately enough?

Nah, I’m done with the back and forth. I’m going to continue to root for and support each player and the team. You can stick with your talking points.

"Balls to the wall" was probably first attested to in the 1960s in the context of aviation. Aircraft have up to three controls per power-plant: throttle control; mixture control, in aircraft with reciprocating power plants; and propeller RPM control, in aircraft with a variable speed propeller. These controls can be either plungers that you push the ball end into the firewall for maximum power setting, or a lever with a ball top that you push upwards towards the firewall for maximum power setting. Thus, putting "balls to the wall" gives the aircraft the maximum power output for takeoff. It probably does not originate from railroad jargon as some have previously claimed.[1]

Also an 80's classic
