Dino's Game 9 Press Conference | Pitt

Garrett Williams has a torn ACL, per Babers.

Garrett Shrader was cleared to play by trainers and wanted to play against ND, but Babers thought he didn’t have the tools to compete against the Irish.

Babers on QB Carlos Del-Rio Wilson: “The biggest thing when someone gets a chance to play in a new system is to get the kinks out. If and when he gets another opportunity, you’d like him to do better than the first time.”

Babers declined to reveal SU’s plan at quarterback against Pitt.

Babers said the depth of the defense is getting tested, but they’re doing okay to good. Singled out Kevon Darton as a guy that’s stepped up on the defensive line.

Babers on Williams’ impact on this team: “He’s Syracuse through and through.”

Babers on the plan at CB after the loss of Williams: “Sometimes when you lose a bonafide starter like that, it’s not one guy stepping up. Sometimes it’s a rotation that’s based on what the offense is doing.”

Babers on how a coaching staff prepares a backup QB: “You don’t. Split practice reps means split performance.”

Babers seems to have changed his tune on Halloween in his tenure here. Years ago, he seemed to disagree with Susan’s insistence to hand out full-size candy bars. Now, “our neighbors are playing for second place.”

Babers said that while Syracuse is on a two game skid, he’s excited that the Orange are 3-1 in the ACC Atlantic, a division he calls one of the top three in the nation. (Cited the Big 10 East and SEC West as the other two).

It's incredible how purposefully Dino is trying to dampen any CDRW enthusiasm. It's pretty funny.

Although he does make a good point that the defense hasn't prepared for the backup so sometimes they look better than they are based on the defense not knowing what they're getting

Do you want Pitt preparing for both QB's this week, or just CD-RW?

The last thing you want to do at a press conference is answer questions.

Oh I’m 100% ok with not saying who our QB this Saturday is. But it wouldn’t kill him to say the kid played well. He’s overdoing the whole strategy. It’s no big deal.

Yeah, there's no harm in saying something generic like -
he did very well given he came in cold, and had a TON of drops.
Naturally there's room for improvement, but that's normal for any backup getting their first live game reps in a while.
A healthy GS is still our starter.

And leave it at that.
(which is specifically also NOT saying how "healthy" GS is, or isn't right now)

Ultimately it was Babers decision to play Garrett hurt.

I’d love for Dino to start taking more responsibility in the future.

Shredder's a gamer and he wanted to play. He convinced the training staff that he was healthy enough to go.

If you bench everyone who has a little "owie", we'll be down to Doug Marrone Pinstripe Bowl numbers.

Coaches can’t clear a player to play.
They can start the player once cleared by medical staff though. Which is what Dino did.

Im not saying he put Garrett in harms way, I’m just saying HE made a decision that likely put us in a less favorable position to win.

But being loyal to a team leader is a double edged sword, I’ll acknowledge. I just wish Dino would flat out say this was my decision. Thats all.

Perfectly stated.

It was the trainers decision to medically clear him to play. As to starting it was Dino’s. Why would he have to say it was his decision? He started, so it was Dino’s (or the staffs) decision. Nobody else decides who starts.

I don’t have the ability to play the audio right now but did Dino say he didn’t think Garrett had the tools prior to the game? Or he saw he didnt have it then took him out?

If Dino had doubts prior to the game then decided to just go with Garrett, as he is a gamer, then its good for a coach to say that was his decision imo. Not really a big deal.

I think this is a bit of an oversimplification given the player, and how he needs to play to be effective at his position.

But I do agree he's a gamer and that probably made it difficult. I don't think Dino has any faith in his skill position backups, until he's forced to.

Maybe he knows the player better than us and knows he needs tough love rather than hugs and kisses.

He doesn't need the trainers to tell him if a player can play or not. This isn't follow the science. I can see my player in practice and/or during warmups to know how gimpy he is.

As I said in another post I saw warmups. I would have never guessed he was hurt. I even commented that his ball looked to have more zip than the Clemson game. The trainer doesn’t decide who to play but they along with the med staff decide whether a player is healthy enough to play. They said he was healthy enough. Then it’s up to Dino, the staff and Shrader. We know what they decided.

FFS, I’m not asking for him to slobber over the kid. He’s overdoing how “ok” he was purposefully. It’s fine. Maybe it’s the right strategy.

Pitt: looking at the tape of the game thinking, this backup is pretty decent and with a week of practice…….

Pitt after listening to the DB presser: Oh wait, no this backup was absolutely terrible. We have nothing to worry about.

* The idea that DB thinks this is what’s going to happen is ridiculous.

And as I said in another thread yesterday I think. This is all by design so when GS is rolled out and can barely move to catch a guy intercepting his pass, running right past him. DB can say, CDRW wasn’t ready, you saw the last game, I told you he was no good.
