Dino's Signing Day Presser

I really do think most of the team issues fall back on the OL. If they figure that out things will be fine. Even last season it was horrific and they still went 5-7.

Disagree. Now I am only using Nick Saban to make a point. Nothing more. Are you telling me Nick Saban would not bring in a Top 35 class here? He would bring in a LOT higher class than that. Yes, I am exaggerating the potential HC to make a point. It is possible.

The perfect candidate. First, a good recruiter. A guy with Northern roots...but one who coached and had recruiting contacts in the SEC.

So where is this unicorn?

You don't realize / acknowledge the barriers Syracuse is up against. I'm not a particularly negative person, but this is one time I'll straight up say you're not being realistic.

1) Syracuse isn't going to convince multiple players from the Southeast with numerous and committable offers to SEC schools to come to an area they've likely never been to. As much as Cuse fans like to think it is, Syracuse is not a national brand, especially for football.
2) Syracuse doesn't have the cash to be a major player in the recruiting game. Whether that's facilities, recruiting support staff, paying assistants who can recruit, paying recruits themselves - Cuse doesn't have the resources.
3) A coach with Northern roots who has recruiting ties in the South - who cares? That's good for a class or two of players at the onset - and is maybe a blue chipper or two. Once the team starts playing, no matter how good they are - that's not sustainable.
4) Look at how Les Miles is doing at Kansas.

The point on Miles is extremely relevant. Always perceived as Great recruiter at LSU, not very good to poor at Kansas. people at Kansas were probably like Miles is a big time recruiter, has big ties in the South and in midwest from his OKS days... yada yada. I am sure they said same about Charlie Weiss, he will throw his rings around etc etc. Only success they had there was the big fat dude who was a Leach disciple but pissed everyone off and verbally abused kids I think. Had the scheme, developed his talent for that scheme etc. Most times it's about what you are selling not how well you can sell it in college football. Sure there are a few exceptions but like you said nobody from Syracuse is going down South convincing a ton of players with Big time ACC and SEC offers to come to Syracuse. The distance between top P5 programs, mid level P5 programs and lower level P5 programs is staggering. The path to success is what it is here, it wont change, IMO

Please, I must have missed Shafer winning 10 games in a season and his contract extension with huge buyout during a pandemic. That does play into this. I have also stated at nauseum that I like Dino a lot and feel that he represents the University with a ton of class. Not the end all be all by any means but he's not screaming FU across the field at Dabo or even after he leaves won't be smoking cigars in the middle of the dome after a win if he ever returned to coach against Syracuse, that much I know for sure. Shafer was a loose cannon and always will be. He was way over his head as a head coach and would be at any D1 level and that was clear

I am sure I had some rants against Shafer, he certainly wasn't my favorite Syracuse head coach by any means. I thought he had a really low ceiling and he proved that he did in his 3 years. His first year was his ceiling. Dino's is much higher. 10 wins

I am also tired of playing musical chairs with head coaches at this point and Dino had the best season here in 20 years, that means something to me. I am willing to ride it out

Hey, I don't disagree with any of this. I just think you were a little more fun during the Shafer years that's all.

At the end of the day, I just want the program to look somewhat competent most seasons and most games. I'm okay with losing, I'm okay with okay classes that need a couple years to be coached up, I'm okay with the o-line getting beat by really good defensive play if they look competent, I don't expect 4 and 5 star players, I do expect to see some level of improvement and I realize an upward trajectory year after year isn't realistic.

I could write more but what's the point. I don't think there's anything wrong with wondering if Babers can get it done. I have no idea if he can or not at this point. I knew Shafer couldn't almost from the start.

I'm not sure Saban would bring in top 35 classes consistently. I don't actually know how good a recruiter Saban is. There is a lot more complexity to Alabama being able to recruit than it being a factor of Saban being there.

SU can recruit better than it has but it's not going to be able to do that year after year. It'll be an up and down type of thing for various reasons. At the end of the day though, SU will win consistently when it recruits well but is able to coach up the players over the course of 4 - 5 years. That is the magic sauce at SU. In order to do that you need really really good teachers at the coaching positions. I don't think people like that are as hard to find as others believe. There are a lot of really good lower level coaches that are great teachers and get a lot out of players other coaches wouldn't.

Sounds like Doug Marrone

Pitt is in a state with 10X better prospects than NY. not saying we shouldn't strive for improvement in recruiting, but don't think they are a fair comparison. We haven't recruited at a high level since the 90s, don't think that is going to change too much, we have to develop and we have to hit the transfer portal where it is a bit easier to bring in high end kids who may not have looked our way in high school
And they border a state with a bunch of other prospects.

I think we can compete with them at some point, but we'll have to beat them on the field first with lower rated talent.

I liked DM, I’m not sure how far he could have taken the program. But one thing you can say about the guy, he was prepared for every game/opponent and not with the same strategy. He also got more out of NR - 2 star players than most people do and he did it with far less resources.

Special on ACCN right now, they are having most of the coaches on but no dino, shows you how they view us

Ward's defense recruiting and Kirk's lack of QB recruiting set the program back a couple of years growth wise...with quality coaches leading the charge I expect a uptick in recruiting. We couldn't win a QB recruiting battle for 2 years with Kirk and have gotten 3 since Gilbert replaced him. Ward was a poor recruiter for a DC and we'll see a big improvement with White as DC...
The two we got last year neither had a P5 offer I'm sure even kirk could've swung them, lamson is at least promising but I think he's ranked 900's or 1000's as a prospect, will have to be developed but could be good. Ward was a nice guy but a bad coach, hope he kills it at nevada though

Idk about top 25 but you see pitt at 30 and think we should at least be near them

Pitt has always out-recruited Syracuse University.

Dave Wannstedt in particular recruited very well.

The geographic location of the school in Western PA is huge for Pitt.
And, the state money for facilities helps.

Shows us that with the OOC these days winning 6 games shouldn't be very hard, last year we beat one good team and won 5 games, 4 of those wins were against god awful teams, if we just get on stable footing 6 wins shouldn't be all that hard to achieve. Although 2019 was a complete let down if I'm being an optimist that's one thing we can be happy about.

We had a Top 35 class ONCE.

And Coach P still got fired.

We are who we thought we are.
I used to get the recruiting mags back in the mid to late 90’s. I definitely remember cuse being in the top 25 a few times but I can’t prove it. Doing a search all I could find was this on a Tennessee forum. It’s only for top 10 rankings. Tom Lemming had us tied for 10th in ‘93.

But overall I would agree that we should have tempered expectations. The 90’s were a long time ago

8 coaches are on the special, so we are one of six programs(9-2 Miami being one of them) who isn't on, so Debbie is being a big ole Downer over nothing
I'd bet manny got an invite, dino not so much

Dino Babers thinks RB signee Josh Hough can "fill the role" of a bigger back in SU's offense. "We thought we had our big back last year. Marlowe (Wax) came in and told us that he really had a desire to play linebacker." Wax ended up as one of SU's best 'backers in 2020.

I thought this was kinda interesting, good on the staff to let Wax try playing LB when he wanted to. He's got a future there

so he was invited, Cutcliffe, Fuente, Satterfield, Mendenhall all were too and they all turned it down, only Dino wasn't invited?

How do we know Dino didn’t turn it down?

We don’t.
