DL Steve Linton transferring from Texas Tech to Baylor

10 or more pounds of muscle also makes a difference too. Being 215lbs here, and 230+lbs @ TT because of natural maturity is a factor. Anyway, was a loss for us; he was a special type of player, as a pass rusher.

Sounds like TT is bullish on Linton and think he wasnot a scheme fit at SU. I didn't think losing him was a big deal but when you combine it w Geer it hurts.

That article is pretty damning about what we are doing vs what others are doing. I know some of it is hype but not a good look for Cuse. If he is that talented then you adjust your system to maximize or you won't get that type of talent in the future.

it could also be the system we played made it easier for him to excel in the limited attempts because the scheme creates mismatches.

But did we really run him inside against the tackles?

great for him if he breaks out. But what are they going to do with a 230 DE when teams run against him. Or is he just going to a pass rush guy?

always thought he was under utilized here. even playing out of position he was the one making the splash plays. Losing him, Geer, Duce, and Carter. what could have been..

You don’t change your defensive scheme for one player. And I thought everyone loved the scheme we went too?

Pretty good for a program with bad recruiting
Not sustainable. Duce and Geer were 2 of the top recruits in their class. Carter and Linton were solid recruits that actually developed. Trading our top recruits who we developed and expected to be the core of your team as an upperclassman isn't going to work in the long run. Especially for a school that doesn't recruit well and therefore doesn't have the depth.

You might want to look away then. Because unless there are a few daddy warbucks that are going to ensure we don't lose anyone, this will keep happening.

You have to do your best in replacing them with top recruits that didn't instantly win jobs and hope they develop into what they were supposed to be out of HS.

It's low risk/high reward bargain shopping. That's our only path to survival.

I don’t think they ever liked the way he was used and the fact that he didn’t gain weight here. It seems he did gain weight at TT and it appears he might be utilized better, so perhaps they were correct. Who knows? His coach was negative on the program.

They have put the best back to back seasons of defense since 2010-2011 using the player they way they did. He was hurt much of the time and maybe he didn’t want to play within the scheme.

He was a playmaker but who gives a damn if he or his family were happy. He wasn’t on the two deep for a reason.

This exactly. His coach was the loudest, though I am sure he was acting as the defacto spokesman for the family.

You can say the same thing about a lot of programs who are considered much stronger in recruiting than we are. It isn’t easy to sustain but I feel better about the program than before all this chaos because we have a much better developmental staff now(seems that JW has opened up the wallet) and the chaos does give us access to higher rated players on the rebound. Tough losses on D but still a lot of remaining talent now being coached by someone even better than White

The part I don't like: having players develop and become players I love to watch. Then one day they've entered the portal and are gone. It really makes it hard for me to be as invested as I was before.

The good: Since I've been an SU fan ~30 years, we've never consistently got top players out of H.S. Getting one any particular year made you feel good. So now, we have access to these players we never would have gotten before, once they enter the portal. That's a big win. Maybe they work out and maybe they don't but if we got them out of H.S. the question is the same. So it's a moot point. It doesn't matter too much how they did at their previous school, there's too many factors to know for sure it's because they aren't good enough. Give them a chance to shine here and see what happens.

“He didn’t gain weight here”

Not for anything but that sounds like a him problem.

144% THIS.

I get that some people are “hard gainers”
(See: every C and PF our hoops team has had for the past decade)

and I am one myself
(or was - in my teens/20’s)

But…

It’s not like Texas Tech (of all places!) has some magical weight gain protocol that couldn’t possibly have been replicated while he was at Cuse.

I don't know. If reports are true out of Tech he has already gained like 20 pounds since transferring to their program.

He was one of the stronger proponents pushing for a better health and nutritional program within the football program itself.

Maybe he got mono, that’s what happened to me.

He may have been more motivated to gain weight there since that was an issue for him here. Vindication is also a motivator.

Regardless, he’s gone, good for him.

Maybe there's weird science at work.

Maybe he should have stepped in for Thompson once he went down. kid was a force on the field for us whenever he got snaps on passing downs

Looking like our biggest loss by a country mile. The kid was basically unstoppable as a tooth pick. At 236lbs, or whatever, he's a 1st Round pick.
