Do we keep our D-Coordinator......

im am unsure. While i wasn't impressed with the ability of the defense to adjust, i also don't think its all on the DC. We just don't have the talent. Missed assignments, inability to work within the confines of the defense, it really was amazing to see the regression in the last two weeks. Now i will say this, it will take a few more years to get this worked out. We really need to get through the FHCSS recruits and into Dino's.

It kinda does matter.

Losing both safeties to injury and having hurt corners matters, not having 2 starting DE's on the field all season matters to a defense.

I wouldn't want to be judged on my sales performance and only having a working computer for 2/3 of the month because IT can't get their stuff together.
Get a laptop, use a tablet, figure it out. Adapt, improvise, and overcome.

I think anyone feeling we should get rid of anyone at this point is nuts. They played their hearts out for a large part of the year and seemed tired towards the end. One of the hardest schedules I have ever seen a team have to deal with in a long time

Not buying it, these 18-22 yo kids play once a week and get days off when the staff deems appropriate. There was something wrong the last 3 weeks. This team had a shot at a bowl. Were they that in love with ED as their leader? If so, most TEAMS rally around a backup, play hard knowing there is less room for error. Just the opposite with ZM last week. The wake game was more about being vastly outcoached at HT.

This is what i've heard

It wasn't for the first 8 games...
The only thing that matters is your conference numbers for the season as the closest thing to apples vs apples.

I can't overlook how much better the defense was the first 3/4 of the season.

Continuity feels critical.

We return a lot of starters and I think have some talent waiting for its turn to shine. Ward has shown he can provide a decent defense when he has sufficient personnel.

There's another issue - a new DC would need to be on board with a philosophy that puts a lot of stress on them. Dino's not going to play to "pin 'em deep," and the defense will find itself back on the field after a very quick three and out here and there. Given that, are we going to attract a top flight DC? I think a lot of them talk tough, but view the game differently than our head coach.

Does anyone know Dino's defensive history since he's been a HC? I know McCloud ran the T2 before Ward but what about pre-McCloud?

Has Dino ever not run the T2 since he assumed head coaching duties?

No, the opposite. Dungey was so beloved and such a natural leader that the entire team fell apart once he went down. Both sides of the ball.

That first half vs WF it didn’t look that way.

Play a good or better QB and we lose. That’s how it’s been. Good and better QBs can shred zone defenses

Exactly! Zone scheme works at lesser schools and conferences where the QB play is not as good as the ACC.

Every ACC QB can shred a zone defense, especially when there is no pressure from the front 7. It also doesn't help that we don't have the tall rangy athletes that run and cover a lot of space in our defensive backfield.

Watching the Clemson game and their TRUE FRESHMAN safety is 6'3" 225...about the same size as our LB that was playing at DE for the past 3 weeks.

Yeah but they turned to pumpkins at half and lost the game... and the month of November

This is not the same team without our leader Dungey. Which is a real problem considering he can't stay on the field beyond October

Ah, well the overall record is a stat...;)
Lol, of course, but I was talking about defense. Supports the notion that the scheme may not work in the ACC.

In Dino I trust. If he wants to keep him, I'm good with it. In light of all the injury problems and still not having "their" guys in yet, I think there's something to be said for stability.

I think they also had a sophomore starting LB that was 225 lbs. I was surprised he was that small.

I would be very surprised if Dino doesn't bring him back. Seems to be very loyal to his assistants. Having said that, I think our Defense the last 3 games is the worst I can remember. The scores are even misleading, as Louisville and BC called off the dogs in both games in the 2nd half. I do think our Defense was tired, but I believe a big part of that was not rotating the 2's more, like Shafer used to do (again I wanted Shafer gone, but i don't remember the Defense collapsing like ours has 2 years in a row at the end). I am also frustrated by the lack of adjustments on Defense, as it seemed we were beaten by the same play over and over in these games against teams with similar talent (QB run against WF, Bootleg against BC). We made WF and BC look like Offensive dynamos. I also think the injury excuse is a cop-out, as we've had relatively very few injuries this year and other teams we've played recently have lost their best Defensive Players (WF-Bates, Ejiofor, BC-Landry). Think Slayton is the only guy on the DL whose name I heard yesterday doing anything and even he missed a couple of sacks.
