Dome Renovation

Just doing a quick search. With inflation, Carrier paid about $7mil. Extreme high end is Citi Field and Barclays paying $20mil per year. MetLife is $17mil per year.

What if they just remove the name? Carrier has more than enough return on their money. Would they even fight it in court? Even morally, I don't think anyone would blame us for just ending it. If Carrier took us to court, they'd look like the holes. Considering they're moving business to Mexico, I doubt they have the cash to go to court for something like that.
It is a very valuable asset which is why SU would like to end the deal and Carrier wants to keep it. Carrier is not going to say "We made enough money, let's just give away this thing worth $50M now."

Not only do I not care what they think -- the value of the asset's the whole problem ... it's far beyond what was initially paid. Carrier clearly did us on this deal and after 3 1/2 decades, I have zero sympathy for their position. In fact, I'm trying to figure out why you're a CC apologist. You keep asking, "why would they re-up"? And we're asking, "why should we not walk away if they don't"?

The facility's rebuilding. Everything's getting changed out, the seats, the walls (some), the turf and even the roof. It's going to be fixed now ... so it may not even have a "Dome". Either Carrier changes too (10 times as much money), or we should go another direction. They've made enough. Nothing's "perpetual".

With inflation ... lol. They did us, plain and simple. The Dumb center got 37M for its naming rights in 2010 ... just to put a ball park figure out there (and that was only for BB). The administration's only realistic choice here is to negotiate a much larger investment for carrier to preserve the rich benefits of their association with the facility. The building, including the "Dome" itself (we're going to a fixed/flat roof), is changing in almost every respect. I don't see how carrier could pretend it's paltry investment in 1979 should give it sovereign control of the site for time immemorial.

this is what I heard today from a guy who will be meeting with the steel company in the next few weeks. Steel City in Mobile, Alabama is supplying all of the steel. Renovations will begin at the end of the season and the plan is to build a shell around the existing structure so the dome stays open. One of the biggest crane's available is getting sent up here to lift the steel beams above the current fabric roof to install a hard top roof. Once the shell is complete the inside of the dome will be completely dismantled, expected to take until 2018

Edit: Steel City is supplying the crane which make sense cause the guy I talked to is pretty high up the ladder at United Rental

Their insurance will be sky high to have people attending events with steel going up between the events. I would not want to be sitting in that place with high winds and heavy snow with an incomplete steel structure over head.

The SU steam station shell along 81 fell over in a windstorm before it was completed. I worked on that and it was around 1990 when it happened. The dome is much taller and on a hill.

I have been on construction jobs were you can't enter certain areas until all steel has been tied in together. You have to tie the shell into the existing dome as the columns will have to be very, very tall to reach ever the fabric roof.

Work will not start until 2017 I was told just a few days ago again.

Here is the specs on he biggest mobile crane and one like this just fell over very recently in NYC. The boom on this crane just will not reach out far enough to do this project. The dome is wider and longer than this boom alone and when you figure in angles and reach,it ain't gonna happen.

They will need to set up cranes like this from the inside to do what the want.

Here they used the world's 3rd. tallest crane on vikings stadium and that only goes 400 ft. straight up.

Maybe he was using crane as a euphemism.

The dome is pretty much all hill around it and buildings are very close to it and cranes need flat ground to make big picks. The football field might be the flattest in all of the football fields going as outdoor fields have crowns on them for drainage.

Man the bill alone for cranes will be huuuuuge .....$$Multi-millioms

Wasn't the original crane set up center field?

he said they have to excavate a site for the crane. He did tell me the company where the steel has already been purchased but I can't remember the name of the place. And I don't dispute what you're saying, I'm just passing along info that was given to me.

From the very little that I know if steel has been purchased it is not for the Dome but probably rather for another project that has been approved. I think more will become clear with the 3/2 announcement.

Whether you care or have sympathy for Carrier is irrelevant to the legal part of this. They paid for something. They own it now. If SU wants it back, they need to pay Carrier what it is worth. If I sell an investment to someone and it then goes up in price, I can't say, "You owe me some of your gains."

There was no statement saying steel would go up between events. In fact, it might go up between seasons.

It will not be done in the summer only.....Season's do overlap.

Project Orange,a new steam boiler POWER HOUSE for the University will be built for 100's of millions up there so I am told.

Naming rights should be worth at a minimum $5 million per year. Over 20 years, naming rights obviously pays for $100 million of a new stadium. Obviously the more they get for naming rights, more of the stadium gets funded by private investment. I cannot see $10 million a year but who knows. It would definitely be worth a whole lot more if SU football gets back to its winning ways.

For a national company name recognition is important for marketing purposes on both local & national television audiences - aka - "welcome to the carrier dome". ESPN and other stations actually do this well at the start, during and after broadcasts for many stadiums across the country.

Carrier got a steal on this one and by rights they could sue SU big time for lost advertising value and they can easily use in court what other stadiums get currently for this. Easy legal battle for Carrier to walk away with tens of millions of dollars.

In the long run, it makes sense for SU to build new especially if they can get part of that $250 million (over 10 years) back from Gov Cuomo - and as far as I know SU is in negotiations with the Gov's office on this. As a side note, the steel is for the new VA center being paid for by the state.

It wouldn't surprise me if he was thinking of another project. That said, it's likely that cranes for a Dome renovation will require excavation. With the hillside location and small footprint, they're probably going to use tower cranes.
