Dome Renovation

Is that the same Crouthamel that publicly stated that they 'looked into' getting field turf into the Dome, but that there wasn't anyway it could work due to the multifaceted way in which the Dome is utilized...that one? ;):)

The same Crouthamel that didn't have the money in his (Shaw's) budget for the Field Turf but did all the research and ground work for the next guy?

Exactly right, credit goes out to the Carrier management team at the time who had the smarts to put perpetuity in the agreement. I suspect there are discussions going on relative to HVAC equipment, elevators and escalators, fire and life safety as well as access control to support the renovation. All of which a division of Untied Technologies owns and all of which have value to the university during the renovation.
If Carrier won't play nice...I like this:

Nothing Stops a Trane at the Carrier Dome

Imagine the advertising Trane could use against Carrier.

Well there's a name and then there is signage. Sure it could still be the Carrier Dome but with a ginormous Wegmans "advertising sign" on it.

Not sure what your definition of playing nice is, but i suspect it will the carrier dome for years to come

Carrier Dome runs on Trane...probably would piss off the DD folk though. :)

And I think Carrier did as much to squander its reputation by not providing the Dome with AC as anyone else. They cold have made the DOME AC a corporate highlight. Instead ... we had 80+ degrees and lots of mary jane fumes.

FWIW ... I was told by trusted people that Carrier had the a/c in the dome engineered, spec'd and ready to by built and donated. It was SU's decision not to install it. They chose not to install it because they didn't want to pay the operating and maintenance costs.

When people ask why is it so hot in here, its easier to say because there is no a/c rather than we don't want to pay the money to turn it on.

Are you trying to tell me that this legal tactic won't work?

The "long enough rule":

"Or, the U could argue that the gift didn't specify a time-period, and 35 years is long enough."
Yes (to the latter). No more apologies for Carrier. After 3 and a half decades, it's time to revisit the deal ... or we rebuild it with Trane.

They may get another chance ... ;)

i cant imagine the cost to run that AC the few times we actually need it, i dont think you want to start and stop that and running it all the time would be a huge chunk of money for a facility its hardly needed for.

You are going to rebuild it with trane? you mean ingersoll rand? The same company that has moved their corporate headquarters offshore to avoid taxes?

At this point I'll take these guys as my crew. Anything to get things moving.

Hearing David Falk has been contacted regarding naming rights.
No decision, but the build on the east and build on the west are open options. An issue with attching to Archibold (east) is whether or not the whole Dome then has to have a brick facade to match, due to historical status.

Use those resources!

U mean we are going to have bricks...like Michigan...

I have liked this idea for a while. Access directly from 481

Eh, they would need to do a lot of work to the secondary roads, which are all 2 lane right now.

Your argument seems to focus on the "best site for a stadium" while others (including me) are focusing on what will actually happen given all the circumstances surrounding the decision.

Well, the problem is this - the majority of the paying customers for the revenue sports teams are locals, not students or university employees, although of course many of them are season ticket holders. But it's local residents, not the university itself, that supports this business. The University has to decide if it wants to make it easier to get folks back in the Dome for sports, or if it sees the Dome as an essential element of its long-term campus redesign.

Or would that real estate be better used for academic purposes? Does the university really make that much money by owning the Dome, because they sure don't use it very often for big concerts like they used to 20 or 30 years ago. If you want the revenue and you think the land would be better used for academic purposes - which makes sense, thinking really long term - then you really ought to look at the Inner Harbor as a real solid option. It would be easiest for the customers.

We have no idea how much they'll actually spend, might just be a new roof and a couple minor cosmetic items.

But if the 18k more attendees show up, then isn't the problem solved? If we build a brand new stadium in a new location, aren't we left with the same math? (but bigger parking lots).

Don't you think that bigger parking lots means better tailgating for more people? Don't you think that easier highway access could have at least a marginal impact on attendance? And access to all those transportation hubs, just a short cab or shuttle ride away? Better dining options. Proximity to shopping for non-sports spouse. It's a tremendous location, IMO.

I think you missed the point. You'd have to go back to when the back and forth started. Increased attendance was assumed in both scenarios.

If larger parking lots takes us from 50k to 75k per game, well yeah, that would be another story.

Every telecast from the Dome always includes marvelous shots of the campus, its students, and its buildings. This wonderfully positive publicity(plus the nostalgic commentary by Newhouse grads who frequent the announcers booth) is invaluable and unmatched by any other school. If the Dome is moved, this is lost. Don't move. Just replacing the current roof is fine with me.

That's a fair point.
