84th in defensive yards per play vs fbs. if they create enough havoc to have penalties, fine, but that can be get out of jail free wishful thinking

I think they'll tighten up the big plays in the secondary. Our young safeties have bit waaay too hard on the play action thus far. I'm not saying this is a top 25 defense, but it certainly isn't as bad as it has shown either.

on offense maybe. i think this idea of "hey we try to kill the qb and sometimes that means young DBs get beat" shows a level headed lack of panic. i just happen to think that panic is actually the right response here.

A more effective offense will indirectly help the defense as well, by keeping them off the field longer.

don't want to speak for him but if their yardage numbers stay where they are, it predicts a bad record

there are lots of reasons to think it won't stay the same (he brought these up from the start). the point is that it has to improve to end up with a good record. not that the first 4 games predict that they won't improve

Not sure what is so hard to understand about that.

you: don't freak out, we need to get better in yards, i get the youth and qb instability
the board: what's wrong with you, we have all this youth and qb instability?

BS. The backlash came from Go's defensive reaction that people have their fingers in their ears pretending that issues don't exist.

Numerous posters responded with similar reasons for why the numbers might be skewed and why they weren't concerned throughout this thread. Not one of them seems deluded about the issues with pass defense.

he said they have their ears in their fingers, which is much more interesting

To sum it all up. Here are stats. They make no sense for this year, but here they are, because they're stats. Hope they get better.

Luckily, I had nothing better to do either.

I never thought it was an attack on Shafer or anyone else, I just get zero out of it for 2015.

Yeah - says not to freak out but lays out a bunch of stats (which should be viewed with ******************************) and says we should stink based on this. But don't freak out because I know this.

Seems like a pointless exercise to me. We should know a ton more after next week, and even more after UVa.

scoreboard is the only thing that matters.

I made a post a couple of weeks back about the lack of yards and sustained drives and it was largely scoffed at. I do think over the long haul you can’t count on the big explosive plays, but that’s what a lot of coaches seem to measure things around these days. Defensively you want to limit them offensively you want them.

If we continue to have big explosive plays then so be it. As long we we’re getting into the end zone and scoring points that’s all that matters. Yards are down, scoring is up.

2015 = 32.75 ppg

2014 = 25.5 ppg

I think explosive plays happen because you put your team in a position to make them.

Do I think Dungey is going to miss a few of the deep balls that he has hit on about 75% of the time he's been in the game? Yeah of course, he's young. But I think he's shown he's capable of getting Estime/Ishmael the ball when they beat their man over the top. And that is what we have been lacking for a long time.

I also think as the reigns come off you'll see more sustained drives. Call me crazy, we haven't proven it consistently. But the lack of consistency could be due to the lack of consistency at QB (I tend to think it is).

If this were true, we wouldn't have felt so worried after CMU, and so confident after LSU.:noidea:

it is true. one game we won, and one we lost.

i was only worried after cmu because dungey was out. lsu could be fools gold but we'll see. even if lsu took the day off that half effort is probably better than most of our schedule's A game.

That's fair. There were some other reasons to worry though.

I'm not sure what we are yet. I want to believe that we're a well-rounded team with an up and coming QB and offense and a front seven good enough to account for some growing pains in the secondary, and a coaching staff that's rounding in to shape. It's a little fragile though.

Wonder what would look like without LF's running stats.

Curious if there as an algorithm to be worked to include ST return yards and defensive return yards that would give a better idea where we stand. Would paint a more complete picture if you were to add ST return yards to offense and subtract defense return yards from defense.

Suffice to say our starting field position has been better this year vs any I can remember. Result of the D causing TO's, ST return yards being up and having an AA punter to flip the field.

was talking to chip at the game about how you can tell a lot about a teams depth by looking at the no names running around on kick coverage. we've had some years where those guys are hopelessly slow. it's encouraging

yards per play can help eliminate the field position variable. yards per play is 5.8 for offense vs fbs teams, and 6 for defense. more encouraging

I think this team could be similar to the '79 team, which had Bill Hurley, Joe Morris and Art Monk but also had a leaky defense. They had to outscore people, which puts just as much pressure on the offense as the defense had last year when we couldn't score. In '79 we won games by scores like 45-27 and 52-25 but we also lost game 17-49 and 7-35 when the offense got handled. And our dreams of a powerful offensive outlook are dependent on the injury Gods finally deciding to smile upon us. They've been frowning for a long time.

We were also talking about how penalties play in to yardage stats. I can't recall in our recent anti-renaissance, when a team has had as many penalties against us as LSU.

ST is a great indicator of our improved depth as well as overall talent quotient. Also, despite not wanting to see it, nice to see players from the 2nd or 3rd row of the depth chart being able to step in without such a steep drop off from the 1s.

Feels like this group of players will be the ones to take us up another notch or two. Only question is how far they will take us this year vs the years following. We're all tired of playing the "next year" game but it's exciting to see many above average players that will not be graduating next year or even the following.

this year, teams with 120 or more penalty yards have 11 wins, 9 losses. 55%

teams with 36 or less like us that day are 65 and 58. 53%

that is odd

Your reaction and that of the guy that liked your post are exactly the same as when I was pointing out in 2013 and early 2014 that MacDonald was awful, which he was, and which you people were in denial about and took offense to that being pointed out.

It worries me that all the hand waiving about this, that, and the other that you guys are doing is the same bluster used to dismiss concerns about the job MacDonald was doing. You guys certainty had that right. Let's hope past performance isn't indicative of future performance in regards to your ability to assess what's happening with the program.

Where did I ever say "we should stink"?
