Doris Burke

I will be called sexist but I'm no fan of female reporters or commentators during football or basketball games. It drives me crazy.

Pitt is sooooooooo

Tough
Gritty
Smart
Physical
Bla
Bla
Bla

Allllll game.

agreed. It was almost like 95 percent of the telecast was about pitt and how perfectly suited they were to defeat us. they went out of their way to compliment us here and there, but the majority of focus was on pitt and what they were doing

Minor complaint, but I thought the telecast was pretty lopsided. .that has nothing to do with Doris and how knowledgeable she is, and everything to do with observation of the telecast.

I am hoping that they somehow get Knight, Bilas and Digger for the Duke game. A hall-of-fame broadcast team for a hall-of-fame game.

Dan and Dickie V on the call. Jay, Rece, Digger and Jalen for Game Day.

I figured Dukie V would be there but Dakich is not a play by play commentator. So ESPN is going to put 2 color commentators on for a big game that is going to break records (most combined wins by coaches and crowd).

Dan Schulman not Dakich

I'm sure it's been mentioned more than once already, but she is just the worst. Almost single-handedly ruined the game for me.

I literally have nothing positive to say about her as a commentator.
She's knowledgeable and well-prepared.
But she does talk too much.

Worst offense today: At the 17:42 mark of the 2nd half she mentioned Chevy Troutman. That guy killed us. I thought we were done with him.

She's really toned down some of her attempts at one liners that have hurt her in the past. But she played hoops at PC at a time when Providence was winning 30 games a year. She knows the game and gets the players names right. She's one of our biggest cheerleaders in the media. Not quite Dakich, Bilas or Tim Welsh, but pretty good.

You don't get high profile ESPN Saturday afternoon "spotlight" games by sucking.

She knows her chit. Give her some credit
I really liked her comment hyping an upcoming game (I forgot which one) when she said it would be broadcasted by Jeff Van Gundy, who she called "the best NBA announcer, and it isn't even close", and Jay Bilas, who she called "the best college announcer, and it isn't even close". Humble, accurate, and to the point. Like most of her stuff.

She's alright. Just wish she's come off her narrative when it's not right. She was saying that Pitt had the zone figured out when they had 19 points with like 3 minutes left on the first half. And then she was talking about how they don't settle for 3's vs the zone in the second - and that's how they got back in it.

I think she is there for all the right reasons. She is just not some good looker who can read a teleprompter. Her commentary is knowledgeable and substantive.

In the heat of a game it's easy to become irritated by the commentary since it's often littered with facts that seemed to have been mentioned so many times previously. i.e. Andy Rautins is the son of former Syracuse basketball star Leo Rautins. Brandon Triche is the nephew of Howard...etc etc. But to the casual fan who isn't obsessed with Syracuse basketball... they are merely points of interest.

I'm a fan of DB. She knows her stuff. I don't like ALL tv people that say how teams kill the zone because they score on it...if you listened to those two and how amazing they are against the zone you would think that Pitt scored 80, or 75, or 70, or 65, or 60 or for God sakes 55!!!! nope they are masters of the zone, but score 54 points...oh well

You want to say that to me in person?

I agree with the majority of the posts in this thread that are positive about her skills at broadcasting basketball.

More importantly, your inane comment harkens back to when I, as a young journalist, wanted nothing more than to be a sportswriter. I was told: "No way, young lady. We don't care how much you know... or how well you write... but girls cannot be sportswriters."

Thank goodness that women who came along a few years after me... did not fail to make the initial cut simply because of their gender.

Billy packer was the worst...all time
Which just shows the greatness that was Al McGuire. Billy didn't bother me then. ;)

As for Doris, she doesn't bother me. A little stiff but she knows her stuff. Her and Beth Mowins are ok by me.

I actually think women are superior to men However each have their strengths and to me women don't do well commenting men's sporting events. They just don't fit well for me Just like men don't fit well

in general I think that women are superior to men. That said each have their strengths and weaknesses. I see men's sporting events as a very masculine To me female commentators aren't a good fit for that type of environment. It's like a guy thing.

Yah this was my only real beef with her today. The old "gotta attack the rim, don't settle for 3's" narrative that Hubert Davis used to repeat in his "analysis" of every single game ever. Which is the useless cliche equivalent to "defense wins championships" in football.
The game turned in Pitt's favor on Patterson drilling those 3's.

But ya this is pretty standard fair for every color guy so I don't think she's appreciably worse than anyone not named Bilas.

so other then Sean Mc, Bilas, and Raf who do we like as announcers?

i don't mind Doris. There are worse...see Patrick and Ellis

You are an idiot.

Every Cuse game I have EVER seen Burke do (outside of 1 against west virginia) she has overtalked about our opponent.

I think espn puts her in our pressure games to build pressure on us, and to find momentum streaks for our opponents. And yes I blame her for that.

I recall a game or two at nova, and marquette where I put the tv on mute.

Yesterday, both Dave O'Brien and Doris Burke spoke to students at Newhouse. They are both some of the greatest people you can meet, and very willing to help every student who approached them afterwards.

As far as Doris goes, she is so knowledgeable when it comes to basketball. She knows a lot more about the game of basketball than many people on this board and most people in general. She played Division 1 basketball at Providence where she scored 1,372 points and was named to All-Big East and All-America teams. She does her homework and comes prepared to every game. Every broadcaster/analyst has qualities that people will be critical of, but Doris Burke is pretty darn good. ESPN must think so too because she gets put on some high profile games in both college basketball and the pros.

When I watch games, I want an analyst who is knowledgeable about the game, and Doris is.
