Doris Burke

Doris does excellent game preparation via researching the teams and understands the game really well. However, she is from the Dick Vitale school of repeating the same 5 talking points the entire freaking game. She is annoying because of this, but because she is entrenched with Dick Vitale and Jeff Van Gundy/Mike Breen she isn't going anywhere even though her schtick annoys me. Sometimes saying less is good, but repeating the same bleeping pre-canned talking points over and over and just ruins the bleeping game. If she wouldn't repeat the same crap over and over I wouldn't mind her.
This +1

I'd say she was riding, but that would probably be insensitive or s e x ist because she's a lady.

it. She was riding.

Brooky, it's totally fine if you don't like Doris as an announcer. There are good and bad men everything and good and bad women everything. But when you say things like "d--k riding" it really makes it hard to think that you're being anything more than a chauvinist meathead in this thread.

I disagree, she knows the game very well.

Mike Patrick is SIGNIFICANTLY worse, and it isn't close.

Burke knows the game and understands its nuances. You can tell that she played it at a high level. She clearly preps for each game she covers. Yes, she sometimes overstates points and perhaps relies on cliches a bit too much but just about every announcer does this.

But not ever announcer understands basketball well and sadly, many announcers do little or no prep work. There are far too many instances of announcers not even knowing the names of key players on teams, forget about program history, conference history, coaching staffs, even the results of games both teams played earlier in the season.

And maybe saddest of all, there are a number of announcers out there who have agendas and spend too much time talking about them. Burke just wants to talk about the basketball game at hand, something I find refreshing.

I agree, Tomcat. I just wish that instead of repeating the same cliche over and over, more announcers would support their statements. For example, tell us HOW Pitt attacks the zone:

Syracuse loves to trap in the corners. So Pitt is passing into the corner to invite the trap but reversing the ball back out before the Syracuse defenders can trap. This creates a lot of movement and open space as the defenders try to recover. Pitt then tries the high post to take advantage of the spaces vacated by the defenders moving to trap in the corner. Pitt is an exceptionally good interior passing team and can hit that open cutter down low while the defenders are slightly out of position. They key is that the ball movement has to take place very quickly before the Syracuse defenders can get back into position after the ball rotation.

Just once tell us HOW they attack the zone instead of simply repeating that they do it well......

I'm sure it's been mentioned more than once already, but she is just the worst. Almost single-handedly ruined the game for me.

I literally have nothing positive to say about her as a commentator.
I'd rather listen to a duet of Mike Douglass and Roseann Barr

How is this possible? During the game I thought she was arguably the best announcer I have heard all year! She is a little worse than Bilas of course, but who isn't? She is just phenomenal at her job. Says all the little things, gets them right, and says them clearly and concisely.

I can't believe the hate for people like her and Dakich. They go above and beyond saying the obvious stuff. They take risks, and make the game entertaining. Just baffling that anyone could listen to that game and be anything but impressed with Doris Burke.

I like Dakich a lot. I like Doris a lot as well. However, saturday was not her best work.

See, there you go I don't care much for Bilas, who IMO is about as opinionated and pompous as any of them.

I understand that everyone has their preferences (I can't stand Dickie V for example) but it just seems as if when a broadcaster does not genuflect at our particular alter, they are crucified for no other reason. The Pitt game is an example. They do have our number and the record is not in dispute. They have figured out how to play us. To point that out is not a crime it is just an historical fact. If a broadcaster didn't point that out they would be remiss. When they do they are somehow biased. I find that just silly. We are good enough to not be so petty and thin skinned.

All that is true.

Bilas is opinionated; it's certainly not a bad thing to be opinionated, but it's important to be fair and generally well-informed.

I think it is VERY important to be opinionated. I actively encourage commentators/writers/etc to be this way. Otherwise you get boring generic commentary. The problem is when your opinions are biased. This is not the case with Bilas or Burke.

For color commentators and, in print, columnists.

Not for beat writers or play-by-play people. That's supposed to be objective work. The majority have lost sight of that rule, though.

I guess I'm in the minority here, but I like her. She seems knowledgeable, studies the teams she's covering, and doesn't have some annoying "shtick" that she forces into the broadcast.

Yah this was my only real beef with her today. The old "gotta attack the rim, don't settle for 3's" narrative that Hubert Davis used to repeat in his "analysis" of every single game ever. Which is the useless cliche equivalent to "defense wins championships" in football.
The game turned in Pitt's favor on Patterson drilling those 3's.

But ya this is pretty standard fair for every color guy so I don't think she's appreciably worse than anyone not named Bilas.

She's right about that. Historically, Dixon's teams have the patience on the interior to make that extra pass just a few feet from the bucket. Boeheim was talking about how only Dixon seemed to have figured out the zone, but UConn used to carve us up on the inside when Calhoun was coaching.

With Pitino, I don't think it's so much that his offensive scheme cuts up the zone, but rather his pressure defense causes a lot of turnovers. But those are the 3 guys with probably the best overall records vs. JB.

We did pretty good against some great Calhoun teams. I think the final tally was 28-27. That really isn't carving anything up.

Historically, I agree. I was talking about this particular game. A 10pt lead in a game played at that pace is a lot - like a 16pt lead in a normal game. As well as Pitt was crashing the glass they needed those three triples in a row to climb back in it. She downplayed their importance imo. But again not a big deal, most color analysts would've done the same. I think they think saying stuff like "patience" & "don't settle" just makes them sound smart.

Unbiased opinion? Is that like military intelligence or congressional action? Hard to have an opinion on anything of substance where fans are concerned that some will not consider it biased. Happens on this forum every day. If you don't agree with me you must be biased!
