Duke Postgame

They went and got a PG this season, but he's been underwhelming IMO mostly due to the lack of an offensive plan.

It doesn't matter what you have, but how you use it. This year's squad has been a master class in not knowing how to use the pieces that are there.

I used to plan my entire day around Syracuse games.

And there was a time when an SU loss in basketball, football, and lax would ruin my entire week. I am so desensitized now, those days are long in the past.

I hear ya. Gave up on hoops a few years ago. Would love to care again hopefully the tide will change with new coaches. Football has always been my first love but even there I am less mentally invested just not worth it. Still on this site multiple times a day, Cuse sports has been a big part of my life since I was a little kid in the 70s. Positive note with all the changes coming in the athletic department will have a lot to look forward too. New hoops coach I will be shocked if we don't spend the money to get a proven winner. Spring football around the corner with hopefully a improved staff. Have some stuff to look forward to over the next couple months.

I've said all along that Duke has a very good chance to win the National Championship. I think they have a lot of intangibles. If they don't it because one of the "really good teams" will beat them. The top 4 or 5 teams are really good this season.

I want to see Duke beat Michigan by double digits on Saturday, and then we can remove them from "really good team" status.

Right now they are included, along with Duke, ISU, Houston and Arizons. UConn to be determined.

Red wanted to play like Houston this season. Well Red almost, and should have beat Houston, and then it basically bottomed out from there. What a waste of another season. Many of us Syracuse fans are aging. LOL!!! We don't have a lot of time left.

I can't disagree that they have a good chance, but this Michigan game will be interesting to see where they really are. Really good defensive teams have been able to hang around and they caught Kansas/Arkansas at the right time.

I'm not sure they would fare well against a team like Houston or even ISU. I don't think they'll get run by anyone, but i think they could handle them.

In what other scenario in the actual “business” world would red not be terminated by now? You make a million a year and suck? Just finish out the next month please. Make sure you let the world see how bad you are so it shows how loyal and stupid we are. Thanks.

But, this isn’t like the business world.

Letting him go today would be an act of mercy. And it would have been one a month ago also. The idea firing a guy in season embarrasses a guy, but forcing him to coach a team that has quit, in games we lose -often badly, while TV announcers talk about the sad state of Syracuse basketball and home fans chant for his firing is crazy.

“We don’t want to embarrass him by firing him in season, we’ll stick with him through another month of humiliation rituals so he can leave with dignity!”

Just so stupid and out of touch with reality.

Who would you have take over for the remainder of the season? And I haven’t seen any answers.

It’s not about not embarrassing Red or the ‘program.’ You essentially have either someone currently on the bench, who is a part of this already, or you have to find someone from the outside who would be an interim hire and has no reason to want this stink attached to him unless he truly believed he could impress the world in a short time span, enough that he would then be given the full title going forward. Who is out there that would want that? How much you paying for that?

you turn it over to the one person on staff who has been a head coach. If any of the other assistants decide to leave, including Eng., then there was one post that said we should have ChatGPT coach, and I am on board with that...or bring back Jimbo for 5 games

I am actually driving there separately as the buddy I go with will stay there till the last moment even if we lose by 37.

His assistant coaches as actual teachers have brought and bring very little to the table. I did not want to believe it, but at the time of original hiring had a sense that this is where it could end 36 months later given the assistant coach situation. And here we are. 3 weeks to go and the boil will be lanced and the healing process can begin.

This is why Red won't be fired until the last game. They don't trust the assistants, IMO.

With our assistants in charge we might have lost by 45, what an embarrassment that would have been

yep we're all still here.

We all still pay attention, albeit less so than usual or barely at all. But if they invest in a good hire, with the dome environs, with the history not all that far back (both sports), we'll all.....well I'll speak for myself but think most here would be too.....I'll be happy to reinvest and be back invested to the same degree that once was mentally and physically for sure and likely financially as well.

Is it a guarantee the pieces will fall in place once more to allow this to happen? In this new modern era with NIL, etc., maybe not, but I'm holding out hope that like with lax, we come roaring back and we get the rush of it all once more more often than not.

I frankly think he lost his best assistant when Gerry left for Siena after that first year.
Ironically, the only decent year Red has had, even with the toxic player situation we were all told about that year.

I often wondered if he left because he really wanted to stretch his wings as a head coach, or he could see the real *** show that was coming.

At any rate, worked out well for Gerry as he is doing really well at Siena. 3rd in their league with 18 wins.
Not bad considering they only had 4 wins 2 years ago and finished last in their 13 team league.

For anyone interested, they play the first place team Friday and the second place team on Sunday.

Adding to it. Every team we’ve played runs MULTIPLE actions at the same time. One guy screens the ball while there’s an off ball screen on the wing, Somebody’s cutting through the lane to the other side, DHO’s with baseline screens, you name it. Multiple actions while we settle for high PnR’s and hope for a drive or kick

The thing I sincerely do not understand is that our coaches have tape and can see, as clear as day, what other teams are doing! Dog, you make probably 2.5 million dollars a year. Your weekly gross income on your paycheck is 50K. FIgure out how to run a back screen and a flare at the same time.

This is the way I've felt about many of our guards lately. Girard was a nice shooter, so you set him up with a screen or two to get him open. He should not have been the primary ballhandler. Richmond should have been the ball dominant PG.

JJ is a sparkplug who is fast and good at getting into the lane and taking advantage of opportunities when the defense keys in on other players. He should not be the guy you build your offense around.

I find myself blaming JB/Red for these players' troubles more than the players themselves. I know that the players have their limitations, but they also have some strengths and the SU coaching staff haven't put them in good positions to be successful.

The #1 issue has been the HC as it pertains to JGIII and JJ (and others).

JGIII was clearly a 2 guard or maybe a combo in limited mins as well but had to be paired with a true lead guard and a good defensive backcourt mate.

JJ should have been focused on driving and attacking this whole time.

Add in the other issues and it's a confluence of badness going back a while now.

I think… Dan’s overall record at his last gig was 72-109.
Against not-this-level competition. I’m not sure how he got our job, save for the Leffew relationship potential, but I really don’t see qualifications for even an interim HC position.

A good coach would draw up plays and clean looks for our best player. Our offense consists of 2 guys standing in the corner, Kyle (maybe) setting a pick, and then one on one from one of the guards

Even as half way decent coach would draw up plays.
