Dungey stiff arm

1 thing I’ll say about Dungey is he has officially invited a bullseye on his back from the refs.

No need to go after a completely innocent player on sideline like that (2’d time in career which is reason for bullseye IMO) not to mention what he did on the very next play to the innocent tackler.

He does any of that stuff again no way he doesn’t get called.

You should watch that sideline play again. That kid picked his helmet up and smacked Dungey in the grill. Tried to help stop Dungey with a helmet to the face.

Next play Dungey is picking the kid up and falls over. That’s why it seemed so $kd up.

Right. The kid who Dungey was trying to pull-up didn’t react.

It was the kid who made the tackle and was talking crap...and then he saw his guy and Dungey falling over, and he went after Dungey and instigated the whole thing.

To be honest I think it should be a personal foul when the player who has the ball stiff arms the attempted tackler in the face.

I remember during the Bills 4 SB run there was a TE that was running down the sideline after a catch. The defender gets to him and instead of stiff arming, the TE grabs the facemask and holds it for something like 15 yards. That was funny.

I thought that for years as well

I saw the play live and the replay of the sideline. Didnt look to me like anything provoked Dungey - but i may have missed it.

The next play, Dungey aggressively picked that kid up for no reason. Not like a hand to help, an aggressive 2 hands lets get you up as fast as possible with the other kid having no clue what is going on - which is why he fell over. THere was no reason for it and frankly well over the line of no place in football for it.

that being said - i am a guy who always toed that exact line in sports. some of it is needed and dungey clearly motivates the team. But he is going to get flagged the next time anything near that line happens, mark my words.

What? Why? As long as he's not grabbing the face mask there is no safety issue. It's a legitimate defense from getting tackled.

Everyone else has to play by the rule of no hands to the facemask, the offense as well except for a guy carring the ball? No...it should be illegal. Straight arm to the body...absolutely, but not the face.

It’s totally different. The offensive player isn’t trying to tackle the defensive player when he places his hand on the face mask. It’s an attempt to create space. When the defensive player does it, it’s usually dragging the offensive guy down to the ground.

I get there are the occasional ticky tack face mask calls against the D but I think it general that’s the big difference.

I’ve been saying this for years. If an O or D lineman does it, it’s illegal hands to the face. If a defender pushes a ball carrier to the ground or out of bounds by the facemask (even without grabbing it) it’s a likely penalty.

I’m also really interested to see how many ball carriers are called for leading with their helmet when initiating contact in both CFB & the NFL this year. If they actually care about safety & injury reduction it should be called equally both ways.

If that is the rationale, why do lineman on both sides get called for "illegal hands to the face?"

As an offensive player, you cannot “grasp” the face mask. Anything else goes... we’re currently teaching the top of the shoulder pads beneath the throat... but it is perfect legal to hit your palm right above or on the face mask.

Personally, legally, I think the most effective method is to give them a stiff palm directly in the center of the helmet where the top of the face mask meets the shell.

He got flagged on the aggressive pick up

I originally thought the unsportsmanlike conduct was after the agressive pickup because they never threw a flag until the fracas.

But I just watched the replay - he def didn’t do anything flag worthy after the pickup so I think you are right.

Also - on the replay the play before that is significantly worse than even I remembered. The guy He 2 handed shoved and yelled at couldn’t have been more of an innocent bystander. Like I said, I’m all for toying the line. But no need for that. Especially for his own safety on the opposing sideline. That’s just stupid.

I don't think anyone is arguing whether or not it is legal. They're stating they don't think it should be.

I think we missed Lewis as the Dungey whisperer. He was clearly agitated every moment he was on the sideline (and Dino confirmed it). As soon as he gets back in the game, he takes it out on the guy he ran into on the WMU sideline. Got away with that one, but he was on the radar when he did his awkward helping up. No one was there to keep him calm.

He punched Dungey in the chin with his helmet.

Ehhh I think it was blown out of proportion. The first incident on the sidelines if you watch the Western Michigan player actually puts his helmet between him and Dungey and if Eric didn't raise his hands like he did then he probably would of had them jam directly into the helmet which could be a potentially dangerous situation. It's hard to see and you have to watch close. But you can definitely see the guy try and use his helmet as a shield instead of getting out of the way. He could have easily injured Dungey doing that.

And the 2nd incident it was clear he was just trying to help the tackler up and end up falling backwards. We run hurry up and Eric helps defenders get to their feet when they stay down longer to slow our hurry up. I didn't think he deserved to get flag. Yes his actions started the ordeal because Western Michigan thought he was trying to throw the tacker to the ground but a player shouldn't be flagged for helping a player up and falling. Regards misjudged that situation.
