E-Rob & the Defense

Well Tennessee is destroying Georgia defense. Erob is learning. Lets see how this season shakes out
Agreed. Let’s not forget we only gave up 3 points in first half with our first strings against colgates first strings. I overreacted a little yesterday to giving up 24 and I get the disappointment but the defense is def growing game by game… u can see it. UConn has a MUCH better offense than Colgate and we shut them down for most part in 2nd half. Tennessee will end up being a great learning experience for us.

I'm on the record as really liking Erob as a person. He's special and you can see the kids respect him. He's got a long way to go as a DC but he's learning and has a solid staff. Next year I believe he comes into his own. Unfortunately I'm pretty sure Nixon will be gone so hopefully Camp or one of the other assistant O coaches steps up. Personally I hope we elevate one of our current guys so we can keep running this scheme.

I'm fairly certain there's an understanding that we're unlikely to have Nixon for much longer and there is a succession plan involving a current staff member growing into OC once that happens.

Which is excellent leadership and planning btw.

Boy do I wish I had an ounce of confidence in ERob and this defense. Clemson’s offense looks terrible right now and if I thought ERob had half a clue I would start thinking we could have a shot to stick with Clemson next week.

But I don’t. I suspect we will open up with our DB’s 10 yards off the line of scrimmage and will play on our heels.

If Clemson loses today and can’t score more than 20 but then goes on to score 40+ next week against us, that might force Fran to make a change. Not a firing but a change in responsibilities until end of season. Right now the defense has no identity, has shown little improvement and does not have a coordinated with any experience in turning a unit around.

They have to get better. There's no question about that.

I believe Fran will look nationally for a new OC if Nixon is gone

Nixon reportedly got a multi-year contract back in February.
With SU's SOS, this is probably not an ideal year for building job-seeking momentum.

Maybe I'm missing something but I thought we all knew that ERob was a great recruiter with no coordinator experience. Isn't that the case?
Seems to me we have to be patient. Players are bigger, stronger, faster and more talented in depth. Maybe we are missing some pieces but the roster is better across the board.
While I preferred Shafer chaos and White's system, if we have better players most systems will work.

We also have a co defensive coordinator who had done the job before. Nobody ever talks about him.

Well, Coach ERob was on Texas A/M staff as Dline coach and co D Coordinator over a 6 year period. I mean it's not like he came from a JUCO or the SWAC. OCs have a tougher job then DCs. OCs coordinate and build up the offensive side of a program while DCs try to blow up their game plan. One creates the other destroys.
In our first 2 games, 1 sack..no pics.

Last year, the defense was pretty docile.
It's time to see some mayhem.

Considering Fran coached with Kirby and Muschamp for two years, I'm kind of surprised he's willing to use such a passive D system. I wonder if Ross Douglas would be an OC option?
