Encouraged by devito

The 4th downs are correctable mental mistakes.

The scrambling MIGHT be on the orders of the coaches to eat it. If he gets hurt we don’t have a prayer to win a game the rest of the season.

Now, this is getting ridiculous. Whatever you want to say about TD, one thing he certainly is not is a complainer. He is a tremendously hard worker who has great respect from his teammates. Probably, being the new quarterback, he has tried to lead more by example, and I think he will soon realize, if he has not already, that the team will welcome him being an even more outspoken leader. This kid has all the talent in the world and the drive and ambition to match. A lot of posters will be eating their words in the games to come as TD blossoms. The WRs are talented enough, and once the diva attitudes are properly adjusted, I predict the offense will be prolific.

My biggest concern with TD is if he doesn't actually keep the ball once in a while on the RPO's then we might as well not run the play, but that may be more on the coaches. Also, if you are going to throw it away, put in the first row of the stands.

We need to simplify the throwing game plan IMOP. Short, quick throws until we get this thing going. The Oline can't hold up right now on slow developing pass play's.

all the diva attitudes---yes devito has all the talent in the world, no one said he didn't. he is probably a great guy and needs maturity, as do others and the coaches need to help them with that.

Things will get better once he calms down and takes what the defense gives him instead of trying to hit a home run. WMU & HC games should show some improvement, not just for Tommy, but for the whole team.

he completed 71% guys. you don't do that by forcing the ball
I agree that overall it was good. In some/key situations, however, it appeared to this observer that he was looking for the big play.

Again, this was a team effort. Perhaps, if the OL has given him a bit more time some of these plays would’ve worked out better. I still have faith in TD, Dino and the rest of the team.

Looked like a talented young player learning how to be a starting QB
this devito stuff just reeks of meathead to me

it's the fancy passing offense that's to blame when the running game stinks and the defense stinks, there is some miraculous lunch bucket effect where a intentionally bad passing game leads to toughness, grit, and strength everywhere else

Really? He completed 72% of his passes, had 3 passing TD.s and the interception was not on him. If you look at it the receiver quit on the route and was out of bounds. You can be pretty sure that when a D1 QB throws the ball directly to the DB it is a busted play.

IF 72% and 3 TD's is just OK for you, I'd say you are in for disappointment in every game you watch.
We are very lucky to have Tommy.
Do you think his numbers tell the whole story?

If you look at the whole of my comments, not just in this thread but others, you'll see that I've been pretty even keeled on TD. I think he looked better but I don't think he looked comfortable and is still figuring things out. The stats don't always show that.

This discussion started when someone mentioned TD has been here 3 years and bees countered with his lack of experience. I pointed out that his volume of both practice and experience is more than a number of other starters both this year and historically. Does it mean I think he's a flop? No. I did, however, expect him to look a bit more comfortable than he has with regards to making decisions stepping up in the pocket, throwing the ball away, or running down field. I think he'll continue to grow and be a fine qb.

I haven't read all these threads, but in those I have read I am very surprised that the obvious wasn't stressed.

Once SU was in a huge hole, any game plan that included a significant amount of rushing had to be discarded.

We knew we had to pass. Maryland knew we had to pass. Almost everyone of he 40K in the stands knew we had to pass. Maryland probably figured out that Devito wasn't Dungey and that SU wasn't going to risk losing him for the season. So the QB runs were pretty much off the table.

Given that circumstance, TD did a good job with the odds stacked against him.

He made some mistakes. But judging the kid based on that circumstance seems unfair.

everyone says that you have to pass when you fall behind but it's not actually true. lots of teams get big leads quick running the ball and the teams that just watched them do it say "oh no we gotta throw all the time"

Probably true with some teams. But SU’s running game isn’t nearly good enough to mount a comeback on the ground.

su's running game isn't good enough when we don't need to mount a comeback.

my point was you can still have time for a million plays and run the ball a lot.

This post is great

Intellectually, I see your point. I've many times seen Oklahoma or Nebraska in their "good old days" score 35 points in the half without throwing a pass.

While theoretically possible, I've never seen it work. (Maybe modern Day Army has closed some big gaps.)

So your plan down four or five Touchdowns in the second half is to run the ball? Well, that does have the advantage of being unexpected. I'll give you that. I think I saw the Giants try that last night late in the Cowboys game. They padded their rushing stats, but fell way short.

The problem would appear to be that grinding out first downs on the ground is going to eat a lot of clock.

I didn’t read through this monstrosity but suffice it to say the primary reason we lost to Maryland was not Tommy Devito.

I watched the game on a delay on Sunday, so I knew what was going to happen. I just wanted to see how it happened. Is SU that bad? Is Maryland that good?
The SU Offense wasn't awful, even though they were operating in a huge hole for most of the game

The Defense was. Maryland punted twice in the First Half and one of those was at the end of the half.

Oh by the way ... we missed an extra point attempt and shanked our first punt.

There is soooo much blame that could be spread around on this. When I saw Riley let that ball go through his hands on he first play, I thought "Here we go again!"

And I came away from watching the game thinking Maryland was GOOD.

You are stronger than I am. Or a masochist.

What's the opposite of a Masochist? A Hedonist?

That's what I am.

I was curious to see what happened and how it happened.

I'd like to see the Terps do well (except vs. SU) in the B1G because I'm a longtime resident, I know a lot of people who went there (many of whom I like), I taught there as an Adjunct for 10 years, and they have a lot of local kids especially from the WCAC which I follow.

I was also encourage by Devito. I know many fans were sitting next to me screaming when Devito threw away two fourth down passes but he simply had no where to go with the ball.

I was watching Taj Harris in the first throw away and he stayed in the corner of the end zone and never came back to Devito despite the fact he was flushed out of the pocket.

The WR’s have to remember they have a more traditional QB who is looking to pick up yards throwing the ball not taking on a 220 pound LB running the ball.

I remember ED struggling with his throwing quite a bit. He was a bigtime gamer, but he also benefited from some WRs who seemed to win most 50/50 balls. EAT bailed him out many times. I mentioned last week that the first pick would have been completions to a WR the last 3 years.
Finally someone with a memory
Would have loved to see what Hendrix might have added

Home cooking is gonna do this team a load of good. Devito is a gunslinger ala Favre and is gonna win us a lot of games. This game will b a good one. Clemson does not like playing at the Dome. It can be uncomfortable if we can withstand first quarter punches.

This team just needs a little bit MO. Saturday is gonna be a 31-28 ish game. I’ll take a moral defeat knowing rest of games will be easier than maryland and Clemson

Devito will be great but it’s going to take time. The game needs to slow down for him first.

By his senior season we will be singing his praises.

I think we all assumed we would just pick right up where we left off last season, that’s not going to happen. This team will still make a bowl game and is going to be VERY good in the next season or two
