Encouraged by devito

I can’t take much from
DeVito’s performance because the game was out of hand so early. He was forced to pass and completed a number of short routes. However, the offense only scored 20 points, seven in the second half, and DeVito failed to get the ball in the end zone after two possessions started inside the 30. He’s a first-year starter and is bound to improve. But without a standout OL and average backs, the climb to success will be great.

Now, obviously the O line was awful yesterday, but this was critical. We could have climbed back in the game once or twice, but we did nothing when we were gifted great field position.

I’m encouraged by Devito but not for the offense Babers wants to run. It could still work out here we have had players like Nassib have a nice career and was more of a pocket passer like Devito is. I just think a guy like Chance Amie would of been the perfect fit, however he had issues so it is what it is. The good is Devito potentially had three more years here to figure it out.
Tommy is exactly the kind of QB Dino wants - that's why he recruited him. Dino doesn't recruit double threats. His QB's are mobile enough to extend play to pass not to run. None of his Qb's were runners.

Did Babers recruit him after shafer?

if you measure his game stats you have to account for the score and the defense maryland was playing. they were playing with a huge lead and would gladly give up anything short. if you thought devito played well bully for you. i haven't seen it yet. now i'm not writing him off by any means. just underwhelmed so far.

Maryland wasn't giving up anything on Devito's passes. He made some great passes including one to Jackson where the ball came off of his arm as if it was shot out of a cannon. Even with the game wrapped up, they weren't playing prevent.

My only criticisms of Devito are tucking and running for the first if you have daylight and do not throw it away on fourth.

He played well except for a few mental mistakes which will come with more game experience. He wasn't given anything and ran for his life half the time. His stats were actually better in the first half than second. And no defense starts giving you anything when the game is still the first half regardless of score.

against clemson's rush divide that pocket time in half . decisions will need to be made in milliseconds.
ball will have to be out of his hands or else it's turf time. he's gonna take some blows.

Chance Amie was a dual threat QB. Now he’s gone. But time will show that recruiting only pocket passers in a program not known for great OL play and average backs (of late) will prove costly.

Was he? Running the ball sure.
I remember ED struggling with his throwing quite a bit. He was a bigtime gamer, but he also benefited from some WRs who seemed to win most 50/50 balls. EAT bailed him out many times. I mentioned last week that the first pick would have been completions to a WR the last 3 years.

I think the timing of the bye is great actually.

I have no expectation that we will beat Clemson.

We'll be 1 and 2, and the staff will be able to say, guys, what kind of season do you want to have?

And we'll have two winnable games to right the ship and then get into the conference.
We should be 3-2 heading into the bye, which is after the Holy Cross game.

i was at the game this is what i saw
1 totally out coached
2 devito does needs to develop leadership skill--he appears to lack mental toughness and complains. team has no confidence in him.
3 defensive line was good for the most part, but the rest were were out of position and arguing with each other periodically. defensive secondary coaches and players need to step up.
4 ol was adequate but qb is inadequate receivers were open for short time.
5. we did not run the ball enough, we were getting 4-5 yds a carry.
very sad day, but we know where we stand now. i would calm devito down, however start getting another qb ready. work with tommy and recievers intently and try to get them to mature.
he has the tools . i am NOT throwing in the towel by any means or just complaining.
i will be at the clemson game,(and others) and looking for a gutsy showing ----as always go orangemen

I like the fact that the RB's are getting passes and have an opportunity to run instead of TD. I'd by far rather see them running with the ball over TD. I always wanted Strickland to get more passes but ED liked to run and was effective many times doing so.
