Feldman Feature On The Athletic

Hiring Greg is what set us back. P getting dismissed would have been fine if he had been replaced with an even marginally functional successor. Agree that the timing and circumstances were not good, though.
It’s the timing of the decision that set us back, the ability to find a quality HC was almost impossible at that point, as you basically had 4 weeks before signing day.

Essentially lost us Rice and Greene, who then went on to help Rutgers to their best stretch in decades, while we sink to our worst

the urgency to fire a guy with 15 years or so of experience was so baffling after a bowl season no less. It was such an SEC maneuver by a school that can't get away with SEC chicanery. The real multiplier impact was they should have fired GERG after year 1. The right SEC move would have been to cut bait with him immediately. Anyone with a brain knew it was a disaster

If the rumor is correct, Jake wanted to make the move a couple of years earlier, but was vetoed by Buzz Shaw. You can bet the list in Crouthamel's pocket would have yielded a decent replacement.

the program commanded respect in 04 still. results were not there but anyone w a brain in college football respected the SU program and P&D. That matters when you are building staffs and guys are asking about programs to learn the trade from.

P&D knew the recruiting pipelines as well. They needed some interior decorating as SU football entered the 2000s. unfortunately Gross decided to tear down the house and replace it with a modular house that was a piece of rubbish.

To this day the fallout continues. the SU football program is still considered bottom tier and the benfit of the doubt with it is never there.
eh, so much has changed I don't think you can draw a line and say "the fallout continues" ... big structural changes to all kinds of things outside of our control.

While I think the timing was horrible, I maintain that P and D had lost a step and moving on was inevitable. Doing it early and then making a horrible hire *while* the sport morphed and changed is what set us back, fallout, etc.

I'd be surprised by Jake wanting to fire P a few years earlier.

A Jake hire would have been interesting. Definitely someone from the northeast is my guess. I wonder if he'd have tried and poached someone from the Patriots tree at that time. Daboll and Magini were back benchers then...who knows funny what if.

The story was that Jake was so disgusted by the Wind Game at Rutgers that he was willing to pull the trigger.

That’s quite a story. He’s the last guy that would fire P based on one losing season and a couple of bad losses vs his overall record.

Donny Webb had the rumor that Jake wanted to replace P but was told no by Buzz. But, he wasn't able to confirm with a second source. So he couldn't report it in the newspaper, but could mention it on social media.

Did Jake confirm it?

I bet they would have hired Steve Addazio considering how many came out for him after Robinson.

I have no idea. I'm just repeating a post that Donnie Webb made after he finished at the P-S.
That was five or six years after the event. He posted he heard a rumor that was six years old

weak sauce by him

I remember it differently. He said that he had heard the story shortly after the event, but had been unable to confirm it. Thus it was not reported. He recounted this a few years later, after his release from the P-S.

no one disputes the record at the end. i think revisionist history suggests staleness. I lean on the fact we couldn't find the right qb to run the offense.

a Vick following McNabb would have freshened the produce so to speak into the early 2000s and who knows what follows then.
we never invested in the programs success. no chancellor or administrative support at all through the years. no facility upgrades or ipf Nothing.

Too early. His resume in 2005 was a lot weaker than in 2008.
Steve wasn't on the radar for early 2000s.

I mean Jim Harbaugh was for sure. He would have been a potential hire pre Stanford post San Diego. that would have been a more enlightening selection than Greg Robinson.

I don't believe Jake would have fired Paul over one game. Not in his DNA. I could see him, as a former football HC, being BS about how it all went down and asking for some changes as a result of such a terribly coached game. But Jake wasn't a shoot first/aim later guy. He essentially hired 2 guys in his tenure for the big 3 sports on the hill: Dick Mac and Paul Pasqualoni. Not that anyone deserved to be fired but he didn't fire anyone in his tenure if you think about it and the fire was on Mac for sure in the mid 80s.

I didn’t take it as based on one game but that game was the last straw.

We got smacked around in our Bowl games in 97 and 98. We had poor seasons by our standards in 99, 00, 02, 03 (losing conference record even with 01 included). We had a yearly What game. The national embarrassment at VA Tech. The fans were restless. There was reason to fire Coach P at the time.

That being said I don’t believe Jake would have pulled the trigger, especially with him retiring soon.

The first of a series of horrible decisions by arguably the worst chancellor in the history of Syracuse University.
I wouldn't even use the word arguably. She was definitely the worst chancellor in Syracuse University history. It's unbelievable how much damage she did, and how long it is going to take to recover from a lot of the decisions she made.

I think the Rutgers game might have been the proverbial straw.

it's funny that right before 97 and 98 we played in three straight January 1st games. that's an Alabama like streak.

To me one of the forgotten Pasqualoni seasons that I think he was pretty good at coaching the players up was 94. Kevin Mason was a bridge and the stench of 93 was removed quickly with the wins early on.

Had they held on vs Oklahoma we're probably looking at another bowl game that season. i argue they should have gone anyway...

Two decisions often get merged into one here

Firing P -
ok fine maybe a little bad

Asking a guy who has never been to Syracuse who to hire, hearing him say, "how about my college roommate from pacific university class of 1924", and saying "YES THAT'S IT"
what in the world are you thinking
