Fire Autry

Someone has to explain the Hodgson obsession. I do not get it.
Western New York native. Coached at JB’s Orange basketball camp when he was first starting out. Helped Nate Oats establish Buffalo as a really good mid major with a blue collar work ethic, then followed Oats to Alabama and made that formerly mediocre program into a consistent national power in recent times. He was one of the top recruiters in the country while he was there, known as a bulldog (looks like one too). He moved to Arkansas State as his first head coaching gig and had a couple of really solid years there. Now he’s in his first year at South Florida and is doing a solid job. But I think he still needs more seasoning as a head coach and has shown some immaturity off the court (allegedly). I’d rather hire Josh Schertz (as you all know) because he’s a more proven commodity with a track record of turning around multiple programs at different levels.

Not to beat a dead horse but it’s amazing the number of schools that have found stability and success in replacing a HoF’er coach. UConn, Maryland, UF, Duke, UNC, Wisconsin. Even Nova appears to be back on solid footing. We really have to hope we find our guy so we aren’t cycling through coaches like IU and Oklahoma State and Gtown.
I think Indiana has finally, after a very long time, found their guy in Darian Devries.

USF blows a double digit lead and loses to UAB. I simply do not understand the obsession with Hodgson.
USF has had 3 winning seasons in the last 20, he isn’t exactly working with a deep history there. If he is able to win 20 games this year it’ll be of their best in a long times let’s not sell him short already.

UNC fans might disagree.

This program needs to aim higher

I heard from a WVU insider that DeVries to IU was a done deal this time last year. Just goes to show you the maneuvering that happens behind the scenes. Wildhack should be having serious discussions w/ candidates right now, and I hope those candidates are Schertz and Skinn.

Skinn vs Schertz is an interesting discussion. Skinn has more time at his GM stop, and also has fewer guys that he could bring with him talent wise. He is also an alum so wonder if that adds even more to his price tag. He has immediately had results as well despite this being his very first HC gig and thus a lot of room to grow too.

Schertz has more overall coaching experience and also has more top players with eligibility who could possibly come with him. Schertz has a bunch of success at D2 Lincoln, 1 great year with Indiana St, then an ok year with Saint Louis to make the NIT and now an incredible start this year. If either he or Skinn make the tourney this year it will be the first D1 ncaa tourney they’ve taken a team to( both have made NIT and Schertz had a ton of tourney success at D2 level)

Hodgson, being a Nate Oats guy is feeling his way through with the new gig at USF. His teams play fast and both score a lot and give up a lot and style is as expected the same as Oats and not as easy at a level up. I think his value is still there but maybe cooled off a bit. Seeing how many points his team has given up this year gives me pause and I think he has to have the same level of talent like Oats pulls at Bama to be a true success at the P4 level and that’s not a small order given the massive SEC money chest available in Tuscaloosa. Still think he’s a solid to good coach but there are some fair questions on his ceiling as a coach to me now. Seeing what he’s done so far this year explains a bit more as to why his next move wasn’t directly from Ark St to the P4 level.

Skinns vs. Schertz?

Why am I having a flashback to HS intramurals?

Assuming SLU keeps this up and goes into the tournament, Schertz will be one of the hottest coaches on the market this offseason.
Oh, I know. It’s just that this place has a habit of going all in on guys who subsequently unravel in spectacular ways.

I’m not really a fan of hiring the hot coach.

Serious discussions midseason with other coaches currently coaching? How serious could those possibly be?

Nothing like some old school shirts vs skins on the basketball court

I'm gonna be honest... I tend to not want anyone that gets mentioned a lot on this board.
I’m gonna be honest. I trust the hive mind of this board and college basketball experts more than former Syracuse players. I worry that Wildhack is going to listen to alums like Melo, and that’s how you end up with a disastrous hire like Mike Woodson at Indiana—trying to please influential alumni. I can say definitively that I really don’t want an NBA coach, unless he’s coached in college and had success there as well, like Fred Hoiberg. You need a guy who knows how to teach 18-22 year old college players, understands college basketball, has successful and proven systems, can create a cohesive team, and knows the ins and outs of recruiting. The NBA, with the best players in the world, is a completely different animal. BYU hired an NBA guy, and they’re having success this year, but I think that has more to do with their crazy rich NIL situation than the coaching. Having AJ Dybansta on your team is the difference maker there.

I brought up Josh Schertz early on last month because based on his previous track record, all signs were pointing to him having a successful second year at Saint Louis (like he did in year 2 and 3 at Indiana State) and becoming one of the hot commodities on the coaching market, like Ben McCollum and Darian Devries last year or Dusty Mays and Pat Kelsey the year before. The good news is that last year there were a ton of coaching changes at the top programs, so there will likely be less this year, and we’ll probably be one of the best jobs to open up on the coaching market, with potentially the most name brand cache. Now hopefully the boosters and administration steps up and can fend off any other potential suitors. But like Fran starting discussions with the Toledo defensive coordinator a month before the end of the season, Wildhack should be putting out feelers, laying the groundwork, and having those discussions now.

This is a good point and we're lucky on the timing. There's less competition this year than each of the last few years.

The majority of the hot mid-major coaches have actually worked out in recent seasons. Just take a look at the current top 25. Ben McCollum at Iowa, Darian Devries at Indiana, Kelsey at Louisville, Dusty Mays at Michigan, Todd Golden at Florida (won a national title), Nate Oats at Alabama, TJ Otzelbeger at Iowa State, Mark Byington at Vandy (he wasn’t even really a hot name), Grant McCasland at Texas Tech, Ryan Odom at Virginia, Will Wade (originally VCU to LSU), Hurley at UConn, Mark Pope at Kentucky. Scott Drew went from Valparaiso to Baylor back in the day.
