I would say JB lost the right to that opinion.

That would be totally fair, but in actuality SU felt they had to hire a jb disciple in order to smoothly move JB out. So his opinion did matter. If you’re handcuffed anyway, might as well take the one jb thought was better, not just the most senior. It’s very possible the hof coach knew Red wasnt up for it.

If SU was so dead set on hiring one of Boeheim’s assistants to prevent him from going nuclear, they probably should have full listened instead of half listened and hired the guy JB said would be the better choice. There was a reason JB wanted to step over Red and hire gmac. Wasn’t just a coin flip.

If JB soured on Autry that much then he had plenty of time to fire him and elevate GMac to HCiW status. He did not. That’s entirely on him.

Wasn’t the story that some SU star player said “They made that crazy linebackers coach the head coach?!” when P was elevated? I know that’s been told over the years.

A lot of fault is JB’s, but that’s besides my point. Isn’t it fair to assume there was a reason JB wanted to skip over his top assistant? And given what we’re seeing isnt it fair to believe that reason possibly could be Red’s not a good tactician? I dont think it’s that farfetched.

I believe there are conflicting stories about who JB preferred to succeed him. Some folks have debunked the McNamara story. And since JB selfishly drove the program into a ditch I really don’t care who he though was better anyway.

I mean, the guy didn’t recruit or run practice in his last few seasons.

1 asst is the defensive guru (i think thats englested and the d is actually good this year)

1 asst is the offensive guru (not sure who that is supposed to be)

1 asst is the recruiting ace (straughn - hes pretty good)

1 asst is the in-game manager (again not sure who that is)

leaving red as the "face of the franchise and PR guy" who kinda just oversees everything without getting his hands dirty

THAT could work...but not sure ego or appearances would let something like that even go down
