Fire Autry

Somewhat agree, and herein lies my conundrum w/ present-day college athletics.
5 maybe 10 years ago, I'd feel differently- but these aren't innocent kids and Red ain't some well-intentioned uncle guiding them through life. He's getting paid to win or at the very least, be competitive and frankly, he currently sucks at his job.
If I'm a student watching guys drive to class in Lamborghinis and having 100s of thousand $$ contracts, I'm not happy either

Yep. Syracuse basketball is professional sports now.

And let's be real, this wasn't 10K people chanting "Red must go!". It was likely 15-20 students who only were heard because the Dome was empty.

Better have a plan in place for NIL money to replace Melo then because I assume that will be following Kiyan.
Kiyan has his own money from endorsements. He'll want to get paid but he's not going somewhere because of the NIL.

He will want a guaranteed starting position and the place that best gets him to the league. That's not here likely when the housecleaning happens.

Melo is worth 160M and will still donate I'm sure if it's a coach and program he believes in.

I just can't believe we are in Year 12 of this nonsense. It's unfathomable.

In 2012-2013, we went to the final four.

In 2013-2014, we started out 25-0, but finished a disappointing 28-6 [3-6 record down the stretch], losing in the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament.

Since then, here are the records for each subsequent year:

2015 - 18-13 [ineligible to play in postseason, due to self-imposed sanctions with pending NCAA investigation]
2016 - 23-14 [*** this included an unexpected Final Four run]
2017 - 19-15 [NIT]
2018 - 23-14 [last four in]
2019 - 20-14 [first round loss]
2020 - 18-14 [COVID year, wouldn't have qualified for NCAAT anyway]
2021 - 18-10 [sweet 16]
2022 - 16-17 [first losing season in 40+ years]
2023 - 17-15 [no postseason]
2024 - 20-12 [no postseason]
2025 - 14-19 [worst season in 40+ years]
  • Four [4] NCAA seasons in the last 11 years
  • 13+ losses in all but one of those 11 years
  • Two losing seasons, which hadn't happened in 4+ decades
  • Four [4] consecutive years of not making any postseason tournament
And if all of that weren't bad enough, here are the conference records over that same span of time, all in the ACC:

2015 - 9-9
2016 - 9-9
2017 - 10-8
2018 - 8-10
2019 - 10-8
2020 - 10-10
2021 - 9-7
2022 - 9-11
2023 - 10-10
2024 - 11-9
2025 - 7-13
  • Four [4] losing records in ACC conference play, out of 11 seasons
  • Five [5] double digit loss conference seasons out of 11
  • 102 wins against 104 losses -- overall losing record in conference

Really, the decline was not just steady, it was a precipitous dip in overall program performance that began in the 2014-2015 season, and we've been mired in that rut ever since.

The conference schedule failures alone should have been a massive red flag to the fanbase, a subset of whom seemed content to let JB continue for as long as he wanted to DESPITE the decline.

Hiring one of the architects of this decline to replace JB was a massive strategic blunder.

It's time to correct it

It's amazing that we've never had a record better than 2 games above .500 in the ACC.

Autry has to know he’s done at this point. I’m really curious what was going through his mind when he slammed the table. Had to be much more than just the turnover. Wondering if he knew he was cooked in that moment.

And the press conference choosing that moment to drop an “under the effin rim” comment is just hilarious. Everyone saw Young tell his team to foul before the last free throw. We rebound, we are going to the line with, at most, 5 seconds left if VT fouls right away. The odds of us making one, intentionally missing the second, and scoring on a rebound are low. Emphasizing that moment in the post game with vulgar language is just sad.

JAB was getting a free pass up until the 2022 due to his "success" getting to the NCAAT and advancing to two Final Fours and a Sweet Sixteen within a nine year period. No matter how much the decline was, he was still making the school money. No one in power was going to make that change.

There was ugliness, but he still had enough supporters. A lot different than what is transpiring now.

Nice post, sums it up well. Those 2 Final 4's bought alot of goodwill in a few years. Alot of whatifs that those runs could just keep being repeated with the Zone and hot shooting or whatever.

Regardless of what happened with everything else, the many years after. We all remember the old man and really everyone involved in the program saying all that matters is March Madness. Even went as far as saying expand the tourney way back.

Too many SU fans are complacent. Every contribution and every ticket is an endorsement of how SU leadership runs the program. Serious programs would never tolerate this mess, in large part because their fans wouldn't permit it.

JAB's overall winning % was 71.7%. Fans weren't used to losing. FUN FACT: He didn't sniff 70%+ in his last nine seasons, including six seasons where he didn't sniff 60%+.

But, the NCAAT glossed over his downhill slide. But, I wouldn't say that many Cuse fans are complacent. I would say they were complacent until recently.

You can see the lower attendance, the tone of the message boards, the tone of the sports radio programs.

I'm a Syracuse fan. I'm still going to buy season tickets next season. Although if Red is still here, I would have to think very hard about it. But, for this example, he won't be here.
