Fire Autry

This is a myth.

Not acting will cost the university in the long run.

I was a long time season ticket holder - I couldn’t make a lot of games, but always had family that would gladly use them. That slowly started to stop a decade ago. I dropped the tickets 7-8 years ago. I have a nine year old and eleven year old - I taken them to exactly two Syracuse games total. One they were so young they don’t remember it. They have other interests and don’t want to watch a crappy college basketball team, so we not only don’t go to games but barely watch on TV. Syracuse basketball isn’t any part of their lives.

I suspect there’s a lot of people with kids around 8-14 years old that were historically fans but the last 7-8 years killed it - and they don’t watch with family anymore. And the next generation of fans is going to be smaller, just because the habit of following was never established.

Syracuse has already done some permanent damage to the brand which will impact attendance going forward. The start of the long run is already here - and the cost will continue to rise. Letting JB nearly kill the program he’d built and then hiring Red to finish the job is going to prove costly.

My 10 and 14 year old daughters look at me with pity when I watch games. They know I am going to be upset but they don't really understand why. They have never seen a good Syracuse team.

Pray for brown
We need Wildhack to leverage the absolute trainwreck the BOT members and boosters who tied his hands with JB and then Red created in order to start shifting the management culture at Syracuse. We’ve seen three types of ADs in the last 40 years:

1) Solid ADs who somehow dealt with getting fed crap sandwiches from the BOT and administration so that the level of success we still had at times is remarkable (Jake, Wildhack)
2) Snake oil salesmen clownshows who know how desperate Syracuse is, and manage to leverage that into millions of dollars in his pocket before the scam is publicly revealed (Gross)
3). Talented guy who realizes quickly what a crap show Syracuse is culturally, doesn’t want to stick around in #1, and bails as fast as possible (Coyle).

If Wildhack gets fired, the Syracuse job will be toxic - a definitionally career-limiting position. Prepare for a lot of frustration as we cycle through people who fit in #2. We won’t even be able to sucker anyone that fits into #3 into taking the job for 11 months again.

Red needs to go - but the folks angry at Wildhack and that want him gone are totally clueless.
i get all this don’t think wildhack should be fired.

But he should be accountable. He owns this decision and he owns the football one.

I argue the lacrosse one is a mistake too.

Strikes close to my heart.

We’ve lost a generation. Fathers with kids in their formative years have lost an opportunity to develop a lifelong bond over cuse sports.

Criminal negligence is what it is.

That’s the point I’m at with my two boys and it pains me because I know the bond with my dad over SU basketball. My boys are 3 and 5 so I still have hope depending on the next coach.

Why you wouldn't do a national search for a coach prior to Autry being hired is insane. A program on a downswing hires a guy that has been front and center for said collapse. What other program was looking to take him away. No sense letting Boeheim pick his successor after he stuck around a bit too long.
Boeheim didn't pick him. He wanted GMac.

I’m not going to judge anyone’s parenting here. At the same time, a team doesn’t need to be a perennial final 4 contender to make it a family activity.

It’s a bummer that SU has been mediocre for a decade. It’s was avoidable, and tough decisions needed to be made in the wake of our second probation.

But if you needed the team to be great to use it as a bond, let me suggest that the kids were never going to be into it anyway.

Missed the point. It’s about the memories and excitement growing up with good teams. And the program is losing future generations of fans nationally by not being relevant.

Autry is probably the 6th best HC in the entire state of NY (Pitino, Claxton, Schmidt, GMac, Langel) and he’s coaching the program with the most resources.

This is why you conduct a national search. Both he and Wildhack should be fired tonight. They won’t, but they should

We’re currently being made fun of by Jaquan Carlos and Chance Westry on twitter fwiw. This is Syracuse basketball under Red and what our program has come to.
I’m not sure I would be making fun of Syracuse if I were them. both of them had the chance to make the team better and didn’t… it’s not like bell leaving who actually played well sometimes (or at all in Westrys case)

Trust me, I get the point. I’m just saying that family bonds over teams aren’t entirely dependent on being elite. That’s why we have generations of Bills fans.

Not so sure we have the most resources

Again my point was that I want my sons to witness and experience what I was fortunate to grow up with: exciting SU basketball, Sadly nationally the program has lost a ton of future fans. My boys are growing up SU and Bengals fans so they’ve got that going for them lol.

I hear ya. It’s a shame. If SU made the tough but necessary decision to move on from JB after 2016 this may have been avoidable.

Do me a favor, go to a Cuse basketball game. Look at how many fans are at the game... the program is a shell of its former self... and its super sad to watch... We dont have an identity, the juice of wanting to go to the games has been gone for years now.
