Fire Autry

2019+ may have been better but I worry Hopkins didn’t have the flexibility to do any better than JB. Even at Washington he stuck with the 2-3 way too long and squandered talent. We might just need to recognize that JBs coaching tree isn’t all that good
I wasn’t saying Hopkins would have been a great coach. Worst case scenario is that we’d have moved on from the SU guy years ago and hopefully we’d be on a better path now. No guarantees of course.

I’ll never understand how JB was not only allowed to rack up a second probation without consequences, but then was also allowed to lord over the program so he could have family time for years.

The last final four changed everything. Had he won the championship Im sure he would’ve retired but he wanted that second one. The successful run bought him so much good will because I think we all thought he had turned it around

Finally got home, I am so pissed at myself for buying season tickets again, I told myself last year when I sold my Georgetown tickets for $15 a piece I wasn’t going to waste my money again until they fired Red, I lied to myself obviously. I watched school after school fire coaches mid season, and frankly I hope the same happens to Red alum be damned. This has been a disaster, this should be a top 20 job in the country, if I was going to hire a new coach my short list would be
Fred Hoiberg
Thad Matta
Greg McDermott
Ed Cooley
Anthony Grant.

Most realistic on that list is Anthony Grant.

I think Thad Matta and McDermott would both leave, both have said in different ways how NIl is a problem. I could certainly be wrong but we need a proven winner, Hoiberg probably a long shot, still wouldn’t hurt to try.

I’m curious about the relationships (or lack thereof) of the former players vs the staff/school. We’re seeing those transfers mocking and taunting us. Has that ever happened before? What kind of dysfunction is so pervasive now, vs in the past? Is it just that we suck, and there’s opportunity to gloat? I’m harkening back to BJ Johnson, and his pops stayed with us as a contributor. It was all very civil and lovely, even if there were some resentments.

It was gonna get very ugly, JB did not want to leave and was gonna go to the media etc.
ok. And say what? This feels like the selection show where we have to sit through 6 rounds of commercials forJeremy to spill the good stuff.

Both can be true. You’re completely out of your depth here. I can own you all night on this topic if you wish. You’re playing checkers while I’m playing multi-dimensional chess. If you want to be owned, keep it up.
At this point I'm left wondering how much alcohol you've had today.

He provides what we are lacking - rebounding, and scoring in the lane.
While his teammates are doing well in his absence, he's the dog.
Does he provide coaching and a coherent offense, too? If so sign me up.

Just got home from a two hour drive. I don’t know what’s more frustrating, watching this team lose or trying to get out of the west parking lots. It sucks to add 45 minutes to your trip because exiting the west lots are a total mess. The university has to come up with a better plan. I’m not going to keep doing this. It’s a total cluster !!! The three stooges reffed the game tonight. There were comical calls with the small ref just choked on his whistle several times tonight. The wrong official made the out of bounds call because the ref under the basket just threw up his hands. The sideline ref had no clue. He looked dumbfounded and just pointed to Hofstra. He should have just called a jump ball instead of guessing. This team will not win close games because they are so bad at the foul line. Kyle made three straight spectacular plays at the end of the press. I’m not sure many other players could have made those plays. Kiyan has his problems but he has a pair because he’s not afraid to fail. He’s not afraid of the big moment. He was definitely fouled on that last play. It was not a 50/50 call like the ref said. Our supposedly two best players are not playing. Donnie is injured and George in MIA.

There were 3 things that went completely wrong - JB staying too long, Hop not being the coach and then Oats not becoming the coach because JB said so. JB should have never had that much say in things when it came to what was next. He screwed Hopkins. He screwed the fans the last however long so he could coach his sons. He screwed the fact that Oats wanted to come here and was pissed that Buffalo ran them out of the gym that one year. Screwed us in recruiting by literally not even trying. The guy refused to text recruits. Let that sink in! Refused to get an iPhone to communicate with recruits because he literally didn’t want to!! Theres so much stuff behind the scenes that went on that I will never share, but that is one small thing that literally plummeted the whole program. Red is overwhelmed as being the coach. Hes not perfect, he may not even be good, but the players love him and he’s great in his position within the university and the community and those that know him can say that truthfully. However, you are judged by wins and losses and you can’t lose this type of game. He wants to win too badly because he knows what it means, but it can’t get to this point. Even if you barely win so be it. You’re missing your best player, but shouldn’t lose to Hofstra ever.

But the spiral this program has been on can be blamed to one person and we know who that is. I hope some how this season turns around, but I wonder long term.. when red won 20 games with the misfits he had in year one, I truly thought he had it all figured out. I feel for him, I feel for us, but man oh man this has so many layers to it

I’m not sure I would be making fun of Syracuse if I were them. both of them had the chance to make the team better and didn’t… it’s not like bell leaving who actually played well sometimes (or at all in Westrys case)
Right? Of all the people to make fun of Syracuse it’s a guy that was absolutely horrific in every respect and another guy that could’ve/should've been great but didn’t play at all for mysterious reasons that no one but uber insiders know and when asked we’re told that it’s not our business but he had stuff going on? From the outside looking in, Syracuse went out of its way to protect Westry.

We’re currently being made fun of by Jaquan Carlos and Chance Westry on twitter fwiw. This is Syracuse basketball under Red and what our program has come to.
Do you really care if those two are taking shots? That said definitely getting time to look for a new coach. Can't lose to Hofstra year 3 at home.

It’s awful, but in a way I do think no matter what Autry fate will be, I think we all know where it’s probably headed unfortunately. I do think overall even if he doesn’t deliver the wins, the work outside of that to modernize the program (not the on court product offensively) puts the program in a better position for the next regime to build on than when Autry started with the program.

You are so spot on. 99% of the blame for what’s happened to this program, long before Red got hired, is on JB. What’s really said is seeing less than 10,000 people in the building. We may never know how many the Dome holds for basketball after the seating update. I sit in section 123 in the bleachers and it’s only about half full. I hope Coach Red can turn it around, but if he can’t, JW has to hire someone who is going to excite the fan base. The next hire has to be name recognizable with a proven track record of success. We may never get the fan base back to the Dome. It’s easier and cheaper to just stay home and watch on tv. We need a go to player. We don’t have anyone who a just go and get a bucket. We saw one tonight, but he played for the other team.

I wanted a national search and thought hiring him was a risky idea at best, but I don't think there's any point in firing Red now. You're not hiring anyone else good now and it would look bad to potential coaches IMO.

So you'll actually be rooting against Syracuse the rest of the season?
I'll be looking at the losses as good things. Its a necessary evil to facilitate the change that is needed. Ill always root for the team to win, but in the games they lose I will be as happy with the result as I can be.

Tbh I’m torn on this. I don’t doubt that a lot of this is true and agree to an extent and think JB def nailed it in towards the end, however I lean towards that red is now going on year 3 to turn this around and hasn’t. In the NIL era that should be enough. We have no semblance of an offense out there and look clueless, however he has cleaned up the defensive end and the players clearly love playing for him as well as an improved level of talent. But you just can’t ignore the results and the fact that we struggle to score as well as improving players.
