Fire Autry

I tend to respectfully disagree with the statement that our players aren’t as talented as we believe. We have one of the most Atheltic centers in the country, one of the best PFs in the country, transfers who proved to be commodities at their former stops but have worse output here somehow.

I have started noticing this odd trend lately within the downfall of our bball program, and it’s the percentage of fans or some media members on talk radio, that are softly or harshly blaming the players first.

When I hear things like “so we are going to blame red for a player not hustling and getting a rebound?” Or “did red miss X number of free throws?” Or “The point guard turned the ball over X amount of times and how is that reds fault”

These aren’t exact quotes obviously but I’ve heard all of that on radio or here.

Those statements are missing the ball by a mile. I Learned that when a fanbase gets to the point where they blame the PLAYERS and not the COACH, you are respectfully delusional in my honest opinion about the root of the problem. That’s just insane methodology.

So in that case I am a manager at my job, and the employees I manage aren’t up to snuff to be what this company thinks is successful. How long can I blame my employees as the problem? Who hired them? Well me. Who trained them? Well me. Who is not correcting them and creating a successful work culture for success? Well me, right? But no my possy of yes people keep saying it’s the employees fault. I mean I just don’t get that thought.

Red is responsible for every thing in the program. That’s what being a HC is. If we blame the players, well who recruited them? Every single bit of success and failure falls on the HC straight up.

NOTE TO SELF: When you see a portion of the fanbase blaming the players over the coach, just know that means you are hitting rock bottom.
I agree. Where I land is that we are not the Harlem globetrotters but we are also better than many of the teams we've played this year talentwise.

I blamed the players for missing free throws early on and for some of the ridiculous self inflicted turnovers early on. So basically 2-3 games. Now 7 losses later there's no excuse besides coaching.

So Autry is 1-5ish now in games decided by 3 points? Just goes to show what the margins are between irrelevant and being ranked in college hoops.

He's not cut out for the chair but it's not exactly like the program is dead. Maybe dead compared to the great years but you can see we had the talent this year.

We basically need a coach that can get us a 2 baskets a game and not shoot himself in the foot with substitutions, out of timeouts, and in endgame scenarios. That would've put us at like 17-2 / 16-3 right now and even better than anyone ever imagined.

I really believe we can find a legit coach to get us a few points and put us back into relevancy quickly next year.
for the standard of SUBB, I would say we are on life support. Alive but not well. For this program we have different standards rightfully so. We are one of the winningest programs in the history of the sport. When your 30k stadium has 5k people there for a conference game, we are dead in relation to THIS program.

The most important thing is for the powers that be to look ahead and figure out how to keep the core players for next year. Melo should be assured that Kiyan will be starting next year, and Melo should be involved with deciding who the next coach should be. White should receive a huge NIL and like Kiyan, be guaranteed a starting spot. If Freeman doesn’t take his chances and go pro, it will be hard to convince him to come back. He will get offers from some of the top programs in the country. Betsy should also be targeted as a player we want to return.
Are you actually serious about this? What do you think a prospective coach would think about coming into a job where 2 starting jobs are already guaranteed with unproven players?

i like red autry . he's a sincere decent man with a passion for the game and this university . great as a player here but not so much as HC. not saying he doesn't have the ability to be a good coach but maybe he just needs to take it down a level. would like to see red and the BOT reach an agreement at the CONCLUSION of this season to move on (hopefully) to another school. i'm sure he'd kill it at a mid-major and build his skills and a reputation over the next 5 years to get another shot at a major player. he's just not there yet and its not helping anyone. finish strong and move on is IMO the best option for everybody involved . and let's win the damn ACCT ! something we've never done or even come close to. that feat alone cements his already outstanding legacy here. and then move on.

Paulie doesn’t run the socials, Tim Leonard does (and I don’t believe Tim was at the game). Brent axe said it was directed at the media table. Brent said “I really enjoy talking to this gentleman, and he’s a class act. His frustration spilled over”.
Thanks for the clarification.

LOL the Syracuse Athletics page posted a video "What is Coach Autry's favorite late night snack" during the second half melt down.

Tone deaf. Although not as bad as when Kentucky lost to a bad team and two players that same night were posting videos on social media trying to sell Kentucky hats for NIL.

It’s a complete mess and there’s no easy answers. Firing Red now could potentially do more harm than good. A mid-season firing will result in one of the assistant coaches taking over. I don’t believe that any of the bench coaches can do better, and I think that it will negatively affect the young players on the team.

From there, it’s up to a new outside head coach to be able to assess other players on our roster that he’d like to keep (Fennell, Womack?) and to pull top players from the portal to round out the team. As some have mentioned, there are examples of other teams that were as lowly as we are now and made a complete turnaround in one year.

The right coach after this season is the biggest factor as to whether we make a change in the right direction or continue to flounder.
I've wondered for a while whether existing commitments to players,e.g. playing time, are part of the problem.

Good post.

There is a ton of parity in college basketball and many games are won on the margins. We have a staff that is terrible at the margins. Just look at our chaotic huddles during time outs last night.

Poor focus, no attention to detail.
We don't have an alpha dog as a HC and we don't have an alpha dog as a go to player. Someone who can rally the troops.

They are even worse than the coach. Do they have infants running the account?

Exactly my point. I went on vacation and missed the last 2 games. Just followed the score and gameflow without watching. Takes alot of emotion out of the games.

Yes the season and Autry is cooked. 6 weeks of games left. Such dramatics from some posters. Firing a coach is not some big deal it happens every day. There's 4 major NY coaches that will have got their butts canned this year for much less and much more..

Everyone knows what the score is. Nobody should be chanting at a home game for a coaches termination. Not cool.
I get that’s the rationale take, but we’re talking sports man, there’s nothing rational about it and that’s why it’s awesome. But, dude, these kids are watching their precious college years of watching their team go down the toilet. Never have seen them in the tourney man. The guy gets paid MILLIONS because of the high pressure stakes. Yell at me all you want when I’m banking millions a year, because I signed up for that if I failed the fans. That is literally part of the job, you have to face that reality if you fail. You think Kentucky, Duke, UNC fans would act different if they were on pace for not making tourney for 5 straight years?

Yes the genius sport parent - knows more than Dr. Naismith, Coach K and Phil Jackson combined.

Red stinks but I continue to say our talent is vastly overrated and doesn't want to work/try hard enough to make winning plays.

The inbounds pass last night where their guy is diving on the floor (and they were in the lead) while our two leaders loaf around.

Remove last names and orange bias - this team is not that talented at the game of basketball.

Vastly overrated is absolutely correct. Anyone can look at On3 or 247 and see that we’ve been sold a bill of goods about how much in NIL was spent, and the quality of the guys we got for it. William Kyle put up 13 & 7 at South Dakota State and puts up 10 & 8 at Syracuse. Nate Kingz put up 11 & 3 at Oregon State and puts up 10 & 4 at Syracuse. Nait George put up 12 & 7 (assists) last year and puts up 10 & 6 this year. Betsey has been way better than last year, and we never expected much from Zephyr or Suoare. Overall these guys are what they have been, for the most part.

I think we tend to overrate the talent because we don’t want to acknowledge what a dire situation we’re in with NIL. We don’t have the gas to cook with in a league this size, and we’re holding on for dear life. I continue to think we should dump football completely and direct all NIL to trying to make basketball a great program again.

You are 1,000% spot on. Even last year team not nearly as talented left a lot of wins out there because of bad coaching strategy and close wins against inferior competition that should’ve been more comfortable wins. National media knows, Syracuse is an uncomfortable subject because I think they probably think it’s impressive how badly we’ve underperformed with the players we have. This season it’s awful, players on even the best teams make mistakes, it feels like with our timeout timing and substitution patterns, the mistakes are exacerbated. Last night was the worst coaching I’ve ever seen from Autry. 3 things drove me nuts last night. Zephir, I understand why he played, guard foul trouble early, I thought he held up well, but 11 minutes in the first half, really? I appreciated that he was ready for his name to be called, but any other coach would play him for like 5 minutes than rotate your go to guards the rest of the half. Two, we have the ball with 50 seconds left in the first half with our use it or lose it timeout, didn’t see Red urging a 2 for 1 or calling a timeout to go 2 for 1. Three, in probably the most critical stretch of this game, the under 8 timeout in the second half, Naithan George and Donnie Freeman were on the bench, no words on that decision. Btw, this fan base feeling on Naithan George, I know he has had tough games, but they are beyond off base, ask St John’s who is point guard less and North Carolina if they would love to have this player, they would be contenders for a national title if they had him. We should be at a place in our season where we thinking of what steps need to be taken to get to that level, that’s how far behind schedule I feel this team is right now. Alex Kline built a great roster, if only he had the power on staff management, I have a feeling it would look a little different as well. Especially now, we do have one of the most talented team in the ACC and likely top 25 in the country, but last night especially a team like Virginia Tech, while they are good, we should not be losing to them at home.

So, the student section was chanting "Fire Autry" and complaining about coaching, and Autry's wife got into an argument with students?

The next few months are going to be ugly.
ha this is what I don't get, it's less than 6 weeks. 7 of the next 12 games are on the road.

It's inevitable and by the team we get shoveled out from this next storm we'll be on the home stretch.

These players should be playing on a much better team, so really it’s about the efficiency that needs to be getting better for all of them. Betsey a top 50 player out of High School making a jump in his sophomore year from freshmen year, that’s normal FYI. We definitely needed more NIL, that’s the problem and why we couldn’t beat Hofstra at home and Boston College on the road. Even if this team was 14-5, 4-2 in the league, I don’t think we are feeling great this morning and that we still missed out on opportunities like Houston in Vegas, Clemson and Virginia Tech at home. But I think the vibe this morning is a bit different morning and people would be waiting to see what happens again Miami and the upcoming opportunities in February.

They paid for their tickets. They have the right to chant.

Somewhat agree, and herein lies my conundrum w/ present-day college athletics.
5 maybe 10 years ago, I'd feel differently- but these aren't innocent kids and Red ain't some well-intentioned uncle guiding them through life. He's getting paid to win or at the very least, be competitive and frankly, he currently sucks at his job.
If I'm a student watching guys drive to class in Lamborghinis and having 100s of thousand $$ contracts, I'm not happy either

I wonder what happens if the new coach we want is not a fan of Kiyan's game?

Then he either gets better, or he sits and eventually transfers. Harsh? Maybe. But 2003 was 26 years ago. We're not the Lakers and he ain't Bronny.
By any objective measure, if he's not good enough, you have to move on.

And btw- we've done the nepo "Daddy-ball"-thingy w/ JB and his boys...big reason we're still in this mess.
