Fire Autry

i just wonder what fans think they are accomplishing by spewing such vitriol nostop these days?
They're being fans. And they're acting like literally every other fan base on Earth when the team they follow is in the midst of a multi-year run of very poor play.

The "they're just kicking Red when he's down/no need to be so mean" sentiment that some folks are endorsing is silly. It's the usual refrain of those who think they're above the cretins who follow SU sports.

This is how sports work. This is especially how pro sports work, and, like it or not, men's college basketball is a pro sport now.

Meanwhile, Syracuse is such a soft touch community compared to most. People are upset that 20 students chanted "fire Autry". And that a few dozen internet posters keep posting that they want him fired.

Hell, the Dome crowd hasn't even really booed yet. Just a couple instances of a smattering of grumbles.

I've seen full blown toxic situations surrounding a franchise and/or coach. Right now at SU we're at like a 3 or 4 on a 10 point scale. And this fanbase simply isn't capable of hitting a 10.

i just wonder what fans think they are accomplishing by spewing such vitriol nostop these days? its definitely not helping the players - and it definietly is not helping recruit future players. and personally i think the negative noise around the program is making it harder for the players to perform well. its definitely not helping.
Vitriol is better than apathy.

I mean...i really see both sides of this.

players like george, kingz, kyle, sadiq, kiyan betsey...they just got here...they dont have anything to do with the last 5+ years! so for them its gotta be odd...they are walking into this toxic situation giving it their all...the atmosphere around the program sucks. they couldve gone a lot of different schools...and now they face this situation.

in the offseason when they wer being recruited I can guarantee NONE of these guys hoped for what is currently going on...im pretty sure all of them wanted to be ranked and lock for NCAAT...and im also sure they all thought it was a high probabilty of happening - otherwise they woulda gone elsewhere. on paper, this team IS talented enough to be there

i like this team. I like the players. they all seem like good guys and cool. there have been squads and players over the years that i didnt really like...but these guys...easy to root for and watch...i feel bad for them.

i know the chances that this season has a happy ending are small ...but they arent zero. there is still a chance that things can turn around.

idk - i know the fans are pissed and apathetic or whatever other negative emotion there is to feel...but when i come on here or look on twitter and just see the constant bombardment and bashing of the coach...its prtty rough. i cant imagine what its like to be a player under such a scenario.

and you can say they are pros getting paid whatever...but they are also human. its gotta be hard...and it could even spiral from here.

i mean i get it. im not happy with the state of the program or coaching either...but i feel sad for the players that this is their experience as a cuse player - guys like king and kyle this is their senior year...last chance...and its a shtshw
I think fans want what the players want, to be a part of a good team. Yeah the players are all great guys, but they aren’t playing well enough. They knew the goal and the expectations and they, and the staff, aren’t living up to them. If they just wanted to be praised and treated like gods they either should’ve gone to a lower level or played better. Thats the harsh reality of top level sports. When you stink, people are going to tell you. The next group of players arent worried about what this group is going through because they likely see the same thing we do: a talented team that under performs constantly either because of lack of effort, accountability, or coaching.

Honestly dasher, if this is true, there would be no reason to support the program going forward. If we truly don't have the resources to get what we need to compete, then what's the point?
I think that is a question for all donors ( football especially). We are fighting to stay in the game, hoping we can last long enough for a system to be established. One that allows us to compete with people who spend more.

Well, I guess we know which side Gene Waldron is on...

We all do. And Red will be let go barring a run the likes of which none of us have ever seen. And I think it would be fair to say, unless a Fran Brown appears, this board has already said the name of our next coach in one of our many threads.
I said Patrick Ewing in the other thread! Can we afford him though?

JW has ben beating the drum that the NIL issues now are lack of corporate NIL sponsorship, so not sure there is an immediate magic solution out there.

Yes, us little guys can kick in another $50 or $100 here or there as individual fans in annual donations, but not sure that is really gonna move the needle on the corporate deficit Wildhack is talking about...

I'll say it again -- I'd be shocked if we're not interviewing Head Coaches at other programs during the season. It's 2026, not 2006. You conduct initial interviews and meetings by Teams/Zoom. That takes zero time away from the coach's current season. You can make a lot of progress that way and physically flying in to actually lay eyes on the facilities and shake hands with leaders and big donors etc. is the last step when the offer is there. I hope we're not being timid because we think that's the way it is. Let's be trailblazers not dinosaurs.

Besides making us look foolish, there will be no interviews with coaches who are currently coaching their team while the season is still going. And there certainly won't be a head start on kids in the portal. That is not to say that words will not be exchanged between the A.D. and agents. That will happen whether Red is fired or not. Firing Red right now, doesn't help in any way. Oh, but it will make you feel good.
Unfortunately firing Red now would be a terrible decision. As for our next coach NIL isn't the biggest problem, any good coach is going to look at the way things have been handled here the last 12 years and pass. Coyne didn't stay long after looking at the hierarchy with the BOT, and the Athletic Department.
I really feel we will get a lower division coach with a good record. The top choices people are talking about aren't going to come here.

LOL Couldn't be a serious post. The good news is that we could afford him.
Are you saying I'm an unserious poster? I will also accept Huggy Bear although he may be more expensive as we should hire him a 24/7 DD.

Btw the outside hire must embrace the basketball alums and not go all Dino. Fran is the blueprint of how to embrace yourself into Syracuse as an outside guy.

Which shouldn’t be difficult to do now that the all in alum hire has floundered.

i'm surprised by that opinion. ive had many many interactions with gene over the years and i can't name a more pleasant and friendly person.
Fair enough. We have had two very poor interactions but that could be just as much my fault as his.

It's so hard to reach, and maintain that level 5!

Hedging is such a beautiful gift! ;)
