Fire Autry

All this hoo-ha!

I already know Red is gone. So does everyone else that might care and that includes Wildhack, any current coach that might interested in the job and their agent. There is nothing preventing people from talking or the conversations that have already occurred.

All in good time. It is almost February and it’s a short month. My only question is to decide if I go to any more games or stay home and watch Thin Man movies.

Back in college I had a poster that said “Tired of the same old ?”
Well had to use the *, but you know what I meant. That’s how I feel about the season, the whole Red situation and frankly, most of the posts

Agreed.

This next hire will reveal what the AD and University want our men's basketball program to be: a decently compensated but middling P4 program, or a team that can again contend for perennial top 25 status.

If they go cheap or inexperienced, it's the former.

And not that any hire is a sure thing, but I have limited trust in their capability / ability to get this hire right, after how badly they collectively botched the last hiring process.

Also bears mentioning that we're going to have a LOT of competition this offseason, as a lot of coaches are going to be let go from P4 programs. So getting a jump on the competition is going to be key.
RF, a couple of questions. First, re: this comment below: I always thought you were one of the many posters on here who insisted that Wildhack basically had to hire one of JB’s guys, Red or Gmac, in order to get him to finally retire? Or do you not believe that? I remember you beating the drum that we should go outside the program but I thought you figured this interim step was inevitable to get JB to go.

Second, what competition? Unless UNC parts ways with Hubert Davis, we could very well be the top school looking for a new head coach this offseason. There was a lot of change last offseason.

(Not that we shouldn’t try to get a jump on the competition.)

In order to change you have to be able to (1) identify what needs to change, (2) develop the solution, and (3) implement it.

Red isn’t capable of any of those things.
From an article in The Athletic, about Indiana football success, from a P4 assistant coach. Applies to Autry

"it really puts coaching in perspective. Get the right guys you can coach who will buy into what you want them to do, and let them play.”

That was the takeaway for many coaches: Fundamentals are more important now because of how pieced-together teams are. And Indiana jumped out for its fundamentals."

FWIW I asked my friend who is a big UNC fan and follows them closely, what he thought they would do w/ Hubert Davis. It sounded like a similar situation as us, nice guy, but not necessarily a good HC and thought he'd be let go. However, when I mentioned Schertz, he didn't know who he was and felt UNC would go after a big name like Oats.

Staying "inside the family" has also been a big deal with some UNC fans since Dean retired. Will be interesting to see if their fanbase has gotten over that.

True-He talked about that as well, as part of the dynamic that firing Davis would mean going out of the family, which would be difficult for some. He felt getting a big name would help them get past that.

UNC will grab a bigger name than Schertz.

Davis came within an eyelash of winning a title. Went to the tourney a couple of other times. And are a top 20 team this year. Id kill for that level of ineptitude.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, that makes sense. UNC will go after a big name like Oats or one of the proven mid major guys now having P4 success like Byington at Vandy, McCasland at Texas Tech, McCollum at Iowa, etc.
