First Final Four Team To Reunite

Been saying this for years. The entire process of retiring jerseys is a fraud until Hackett's goes up. The guy put up Carmello Anthony numbers (slightly better actually) while leading an essentially mid-major SU team to the final four.
We have a banner in the Dome for our 2013 football season where we farted our way to a 7-6 record, but not the 1975, 1987, 1996, 2013 or 2016 Final Fours.

We have banners painted on the walls for all our bowl victories only. Not a mention of bowl losses.

Only winners get bannered.

I get it -- it's just nonsensical. That a 7-6 Texas Bowl win would get recognized, but all those BCS bowls in the 90s with Big East Championships attached, or the undefeated 1987 season gets nothing.

SU is just very weird about their approach to showcasing accomplishments across the board in every sport.

Jimmy was more of a 12 foot guy. He never missed from that distance. Kohl's would have been unreal with the 3 pt shot.
I think 12 feet is cutting him a little short on his range.I remember more like a 17-18 foot jumper range.Roy Danforth is quoted as saying Jimmy was deadly from 21 feet.

Okay. Just that from that distance, he didn't miss. I actually thought we had a better team the year before. Chemistry wasn't quite as good.

I don’t remember Hackett shooting a lot of long range jumpers.Maybe you are thinking of Jimmy Lee or before him Greg Kohl’s would of really benefited from the 3 point line.
Hmmm, I stand corrected.

I keep my comment about his fitness on the record, though, your honor. Recent pictures indicate he is in great shape. He's on staff as strength and conditioning coach at USC (not the knock off variety in the Southeast...)

Great news and well deserved

Jimmy Lee might be like the last player who was a really good free throw shooter, OK that's somewhat of an exaggeration

Rudy was an amazing player for SU and I have always been puzzled why he doesn't get as much respect as some guys,

My favorite all time SU player Chris Sease was on that team he was tremendous defender and had thr best nickname of all time of course being "the rocket man" for his explosive jumping ability.

I haven't looked at that roster in ages but it seems that almost if not everybody was from NY

Maybe because they played before the dome era that maybe they don't get the respect they deserve

An encounter with Kansas City in the regional final was another thriller in which Syracuse prevailed, 95-87, in overtime. Hackett extended the game with a left-handed hook with five ticks on the clock in regulation. He ended up with 28 points and 16 boards in the game that provided Syracuse with its first venture to the Final Four.

Kansas CITY? Jesus H Christ.

Kansas State with the masked man Chuckie Williams!

While Steve Shaw, Rudy Hackett, Jimmy Lee are in the team picture, they are not mentioned on the roster.

Reggie Powell and Shack were not on that team.

Billy Keys was not on that team. He arrived the following year and then transferred out.

Just a poor job of editing, proofing and researching from a department that gave us Roosevelt "Bowie" on a framed jersey, Buddy "Boehiem" on a game jersey and gave a sculptor modern Nike cleats as an example of the type of footwear worn by Ernie Davis. The sculptor put Ernie in modern Nikes and the sculpture had to be redone. And then they do press conferences where you cannot hear the media questions because they do not have a wireless microphone to give to the media.

LOL.

Hackett and Lee were the biggest stars on the team. Shaw was in the rotation and played quite a bit. How could they miss Rudy and Jimmy?

Oh well.

It would be great if one of the local TV stations could get the rights to the games against K State and UNC and show them on local TV while the team is in town. And if the games could be played before the game in the hopefully open for business Miron Victory Court.

Here are 26 minutes of huighlights of the SU-UNC game. Phil Ford was an AA for them at the time.

outstanding, loved Marv Albert and Bucky Waters!

This is outstanding. 5 things that stood out to me.
1. JB arguing with refs while seated on bench as an assistant coach.
2. The speed of Bug Williams outrunning three Carolina players for an errant pass in the NC offensive end and converting it into an easy layup on the other end. He was a blur on that play.
3. The competency of Williams and Jim Lee as ballhandlers, playmakers. Always under control, made smart passes, no wasted or unnecessary dribbling, everything geared going to hoop inside of sideline to sideline. A beautiful thing to watch. They both easily broke the NC press.
4. Earnie Siebert was a rugged rebounder especially grabbing offensive boards.
5. The black go-go boots of the Syracuse cheerleaders! Yummy.

It was great to hear Marv and Bucky Waters again. It seemed every Saturday they would do a TVS ECAC Syracuse game. It seems like it was always on NBC Channel 4 in the New York City market. One time, Marv and Bucky did the segment before the opening tip among the students in the Manley Zoo. At the end of the segment and on-cue the students went crazy and accidentally fell on top of Marv and Bucky as the camera cut away.

" I don't call them a zoo out of disrespect. That is what they call themselves"

Funny you don't really see it here at all but Rudy Hackett was an absolute monster.
When the final whistle blew in this game Lawrenson Hall was absolutely shaking.
Literally!

More than somewhat. The correct answer is Gmac. JGII was better as well.

i was in jr high mid 70's and just starting to play ball and follow syracuse. loved watching those teams.
( and for the record they weren't all televised like today. you had to drag your a$$ out there. )
i was lucky enuf to have some relatives who were SU alums and would take me along a few times.

I was watching the game on a 12 inch black and white television in my girl friends dorm room on the 10th floor of Haven Hall. Syracuse down 1 with seconds to go. I swear when Lee put up the shot everybody in town took a deep breath. There wasn’t a sound. As the ball goes though the net everybody went berserk. You could hear people yelling on Marshall Street, car horns blaring, girls running up and down the dorm hallway screaming, people yelling out of their dorm windows across campus. What an amazing experience. Fifty years ago. Wow. Remember it like it was yesterday.
