Great point. Franchises are like I-81. While the concept sounded good back in the day, franchises rely on 'efficiencies' like cookie-cutter layouts and low-wage jobs to push out local businesses. Profits fly out of town, and all that's left is the litter.A lot of people, particularly from the south think that buildings and neighborhoods that aren't new and interchangeable are dumpy. I prefer variety of architecture and restaurants that aren't chains. I worked in midtown Manhattan for 20 years. It amazed me how many tourists flocked to the TGIFs or other national chains for lunch and drinks, leaving the great little restaurants and bars to the locals.
When my family travels, we try to stay in an Airbnb and eat where the locals eat.
To each their own, I guess.
