Free Concessions

I would not and do not pay for what the Dome has to offer. It is embarrasingly bad.

Imagine if they had edible food, as if someone cared about preparing it. It's not even as good as bad dining hall food. You literally can't eat at a game without getting sick.

I emailed Wildhack during bball season and included a complaint about concessions. I got a prompt and thoughtful response but regarding concessions he said, “The Dome and concessions are independent of athletics.” He did identify changes he would like. It sounds like he reads this board.

Bottom line: We should all email the Chancellor and the BOT. I will send mine tomorrow.

I get the lower pricing thing may increase sales. But how does free help? The only way that makes money is if the food cost is lower than the ticket cost.
Building a fanbase...but I think a dollar night like the Syr Mets would be best.

I don’t want or expect free concessions at the Dawn. Honestly, I tailgate before every football game, and by the time I get to the dome, I am full and have no interest in buying food. I usually buy a bottle of water, and that is all I need.

For basketball, with no tailgating, it’s a different story. It would be really nice to be able to buy something relatively tasty and nutritious and get a decent warm meal before game.

I have been to virtually every ACC venue and I can say without equivocation, the JMA Dome has the worst concessions in the ACC. It isn’t even close. The menu is extremely limited, and the quality is very poor.

To be fair, the grab and go set up that the dome has is very good, and most ACC facilities are not set up to get food as easily as you can here. so props to whoever set that up.

But again, the selection is extremely limited, the quality is low, and the fact is, that Dome often runs out of food before the game ends. And if this happens, stands are apparently not restocked until the next game.

Things are bad on the lower level, and atrocious on the upper level, here much of what is available on the lower level can never be purchased.

Things are unacceptable and must improve.
Only thing worse is the suite food, absolute garbage

I hate that Syracuse continues to accept the horrible food choices.

Everytime I get a survey I comment on how awful the food concessions are. Its almost like whoever reads the surveys for the concessions is not reading them/does not care about the feedback.

I think you could almost argue that they think people are complaining just to complain.

However, people are not. We deserve better. As sutomcat said, we have the worst concessions in the ACC at football/basketball and quite frankly it is not even close.

Agree 100%, I think people would be more inclined to go if they had some better choices. I get that the university makes money off of it, but it’s gross. Get a Dino BBq stand, Tully’s Pavones pizza, heids and take a cut

this points to athletics not making money off the food.

Some thing never change...there was lots of discussion back when Coach P was fired about how what would typically be athletics revenues was reallocated to the general fund. That response would indicate it still going on.

There are multiple reasons why Dome concessions are bad. But the #1 reason is because there are a limited amount of facilities to produce food items within the Dome itself. Most items are made a day before the game, outside the Dome, and imported in.

#2 is that the stands also don't have the floor space to store these food items, so they have to be grab and go with extremely limited heating options.

The footprint of the dome is a MAJOR problem. It's also why the upper concourse has more dome foam in your beer than the lower. Nowhere to store the kegs on the upper level = longer lines to the tap.

this is also a bullsh$t way to pass the blame by JW

Like many things on the Hill, it's insular. Have to keep the money circle tight. It's insane we don't local vendors inside. I would be more apt to buy if it was Tullys, Dino, etc.
Local vendors have to license their intellectual property to concessionaires and teach them how to make their items. Generally the juice isn't worth the squeeze for either party.

It's not at all, Athletics has a contract with a concessionaire, it has nothing to do with JW.

oh i fully understand the contract

the dome operates as it's own entity

athletics is the only reason it exists

AD/Dome/SU need to work together and not point a finger

If it was that easy, they'd do it. I promise you, it's not. And SU has graduates that work for Aramark too. There are too many limitations that make it almost impossible to succeed there.

Eh...its still an odd wording by JW. In how you are framing it, where the athletics department has a contract with a concessionaire - the athletics department ISN'T 'independent". "Independent" should mean "the contractual arrangement is with some other part of this organization".

If the athletics department has a contract and his response is to claim the concessionaire is independent - meaning he has no control over the situation in which the contract means he is one of the two primary stakeholders - its absolutely a BS way of JW passing the buck. To be clear, I don't think that is the case - I think athletics is treated as a tenant of the Dome and pays "rent" - and all services contracts are handled by some other part of the university organization. Which means the issues we all talked about being a competitive disadvantage to Syracuse Athletics 20 years ago still exist, because profits from concessions do not flow to athletics as at other schools.

I want the Dome to be more like airports. There's a Tully's, but for a noon kick, you can get pancakes until 10:30am.

This I agree with 100%. I'd be totally fine with a response from JW that the Dome footprint means room for food service equipment is limited, which impacts what variety they can provide. And they'll continue to work with their vendors to improve the variety and quality within the limitations which exist. The response which was reportedly given was inadequate.

great! then don't pass the buck to one of the 3 pillars to the dome. Plenty of other ways to explain it to a fan concerned with the god awful concessions in the building in which syracuse owns

my issue is with the wording -- i understand that concessions suck and there's a lot of things holding it back -- but you have fans concerned with the concessions at your sporting events and you deflect it
