FSU Postgame

Me. I don’t. Lol 23 shots. No defense. 5 missed layups. Shooting less than 20 percent from 3 in last 7 games. He lost the team 3 other games recently. I can keep going lol
Are you setting us up for him to transfer… I just don’t see a world where him leaving is a good thing. You need an elite PG beside him that will alleviate some pressure. With portal talent significantly down this year, it’s not sustainable to get a PG,C, SF and now SG

If they win tonight, it'll be the first time they've won two conf tournament games since 2013 hard to believe
Would be appropriate for one of the worst teams of the last 60 years to do it.

Yes, he did, but it doesn't mean Tuttle is wrong.
JJ is too inefficient, and does not make good enough decisions. We are very close to a 20 loss season for a reason. He did play in 25 of our 32 games so far.
JJ isn't the reason we are losing games. Like last year's team that had to rely on Judah this year's team has nobody on the outside that get a score when we need one. Nobody. Not Carlos Cuffe not Bell nobody. When Taylor or Bell or one of them is on we don't need to rely on JJ as much but that isn't often. He is a great kid and plays his heart out. I wish he could make a foul shot but other than that he's the best we have on the outside. Question. If JJ didn't play this year, how do you think we would have done. Better or worse?

OMG…did you even watch the game! You’re seriously criticizing the coach for putting the ball in the hands of the guy who scored 19 2nd half points and single handidly stopped the Florida St run?
Good post. Lots of people on this board that either don't watch the games or don't understand bball.

I can't for the life of me figure out why Leonard Hamilton in the last few minutes of the game didn't double team Starling at the top of the key with like 10 seconds left on the shot clock to get the ball out of his hands, and make Carlos be the playmaker. If they do that, we probably lose the game.

All this JJ talk is a bit much. He's clearly not good as a go-to player like his role is this year, but if we can get a go-to shot maker at PG for next year I would be thrilled to have him back. A good team can really use a guy with his driving ability, it just can't be the main offensive strategy. A lot of driving lanes will open up for him if we have shot makers at the 1, 3, a bit at the 4. and a 5 who can seal off.

I'm in shock we actually held on for the win. Looked like 6 other games this season where we have a double digit lead half way through the 2nd half and manage to make enough mistakes to lose.
Still think Red's substitutions make no sense and aren't made to react to what is happening on the floor. It's almost like he just has these substitutions scripted based on the clock.
I'm glad we got to experience a rare ACCT win.
I agree.
I hope in future he brings Cuffe in for the closing minutes when we are likely to be fouled.
The dude is one of the better foul shooters on the team.
He was so cool and calm when he was trapped in the corner, waited to be fouled and then just sank those free throws.

ISO ball is back baby!
This was a game where isolation with Starling was a good call. FSU clearly had nobody who could keep him from the basket. Isolation as your only offensive option isn’t good, but there are games where a talented player like Starling can dominate with dribble penetration, and that’s what he did.

Another key thing to point out is he didn’t settle for 3pt shots. Only attempted one.

I don’t disagree although it was a bit frustrating watching us forget about Lampkin again when he started out dominating. He had position a few times and we didn’t get him the ball.

The thing with JJ is that his limitations mean you need to be very specific and narrow about who you surround him with. Need at least 2-3 shooters and a legit top-line center. JJ could stay but he shouldn't be the main guy taking 15 shots/game.

agreed. SU didnt have anyone else on the outside that could score. Taylor was off, Bell was off, Carlos was off. We were fortunate.

Absolutely. A huge difference in Starling’s results this year come from taking bad three pointers when he can’t get around his guy. If we had gotten a top PG, Starling wouldn’t have always been the number one defensive priority for opposing perimeter defenses… He would have had a much easier time going to the basket against every team’s second best defensive player.

Failing to close on a PG in the portal had several cascading effects on the rest of the team.

Anyway, Starling had a great game, and we’re still playing.

JJ was effective in part because FSU would not switch out of its switch on every screen defense. In the first half it helped Lampkin score and in the second half it helped JJ

Also, like the announcers said during the game, if SU had a good point guard, and I am confident those were their exact words, Lampkin should have and would have gotten the ball a lot more.

I agree, Syracuse brutally underused their number one transfer all season long. Lampkin is a physical mismatch against almost everybody in the NCAA. It’s another example of terrible offensive coaching that Lampkin is averaging only 8 shots a game.

Even against SMU, with their giant Turkish freshman, Lampkin is a physical mismatch and Yigitoglu fouled out in the first game.

After Yigitoglu, they have a bunch of shorter 235lb guys that should be no match for Lampkin. Yet Lampkin only took 4 shots, made three of them and took 6 FTs. Tonight he should take a lot more shots.

No one is saying JJ is not a good player or he won't be valuable back here is Sr year. We just need to be realistic that some team is going to look at how he gets to the hoop and scores alot when the matchup works for him, they may feel better about their defense and say we have great rim protectors. They may pay him 2-3X what we are paying because they need that skillset.

Tough decisions are going to need to be made if we should replace JJ with a more well rounded 2 way player or 2 guards that the sum of their parts are better than JJ is for the price... Our Defense is like 300+ ranked, we need to get better on that end.

That's all it is. It's business, not personal...

We will have the money we need next year.

That much has been said.

As much as I have been a JJ defender, his defense is really bad, he makes a lot of dumb choices with the ball, and jaw dropping mistakes, like dribbling off his foot out of bounds or failing to make the right pass.

I believe the new PG will help make JJ better. He reminds me of Triche. Has size and most importantly can get to the rack and can shoot. He won't be dribbling around the perimeter like Carlos. Hes a threat that will require attention.

Agreed on all fronts. I still want him back. I think that he has way too much pressure on his shoulders this year. Hopefully with a better roster he will settle in and play within himself and the game.

Triche was a better player in every facet. If he would have got the leash JJ did he would have averaged 20/5/5. He also played elite defense. Not good, elite.
