Just got home and have not read much of this board, but I will assume this story has not been posted. (And if it has been, so be it).

There were some pretty foul-mouthed SJU fans in MSG yesterday -- both in their comments about Bernie Fine and their signs relating to him and his wife. The worst, however, was a guy sitting a bit to the side behind the SU bench.

Every time JB stood up, this "fan" would yell things at JB such as "Where's Bernie this weekend? Playing with the ballboys?" (Actually that was the among the mildest of the things he was yelling).

Finally, JB turned around, stared at the guy and loudly said to to him (audible to everyone in the area): "You're really classless aren't you -- saying things like that in front of your son?" (The guy was there with a young boy). The guy was so astounded with Jim's response, that he STOPPED what had been a constant harangue.

I was sitting nearby with Jim's sister who has sat behind the SU bench for 100s of games. Neither she nor I had ever seen Jim take on a fan like that. It was a wonderful moment.

...thanks for sharing...and more importantly, 'Cuse nation needs to feel the same way...the sign that ESPN kept showing was "JB Knew"...I thought tasteless by fan but even more classless by ESPN...then again what to expect.

Good for jimmy, just read an article in the daily news talking about this heckler, what a clown...seems like st johns fans have been the worst fans yet with the bernie stuff, classy

Good for JB!

I love that JB said that, however, I feel like there could be a job for DC as VP of Shut the Hell Up. Someone starts heckling. DC just stands up and stares at him. That person just stops yapping.

Just saying. DC still looks like he can be a baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad man.

Boeheim knew...that guy would fold up like a cheap beach chair when he spoke directly to him.

Thanks for sharing this. JB shouldn't have to put up with that for a whole game, good for him to shut him down.

Interesting that he did it and I'm glad it shut the fan up, but responding to the fans no matter what they are saying is generally going to be a no-win situation and ill advised.

That's great.

Haha, DC and his XXXXXXXL blue shirt yesterday. Absolutely love that guy.

On the tube I could see a guy constantly staring at JB and running his yap. I believe he was wearing glasses if it's the same man. I remember wondering how coaches can tune out everything they get directed at them, especially that close. And I recall wondering how much fun JB, with his razor sharp tongue and take-no-shite upstate personality would have just lighting into such a blowhard.

Now I know. Thanks for a great story CTO! Loved it- copied it and e-mailed it to my dad and brother to give them a giggle this morning.

Well, 'JB Knew' in all its vagueness could've meant many things...like JB knew Melo would make such a difference...or JB knew he would tie Dean Smith and ultimately break it...or JB knew that MSG is a second home and we should've been wearing our home white unis...or that JB knew Davis and his for brains relative were out for money all along, just as he stated initially...etc., etc. :)

I hope the Syracuse fans in the general area immediately started high fiving each other.

I saw the "Boeheim knew" sign and I never even thought of Fine. It is sooo old news.

Same here. I saw that Boehiem knew sign and didn't associate it with Fine until reading the board after the game. That said, I didn't know what it meant. I just assumed it was attributing some Chuck-Norris-like predictive powers to JB about the team or Fab or the game's outcome.

Once I seen that sign I was pissed. Pissed that espn would put that on tv, that's uncalled for.

The only shot I recall (and I admit I may have missed others) was a typical, general view of the student section behind the basket, which included some moron in the middle with a small (10 x 12"), hand-stenciled sign. It seemed to me the director in the booth cut away abruptly when they saw the sign and realized what it implied.

It's silly to lump all SJ fans in with the few who acted 'inappropriately.' Had the shoe been on the other foot, i don't think it's reasonable to assume there wouldn't be more than a few Syracuse fans acting similarly. This is a serious issue that inflames people. That's to be expected.

From where i sat, there were more SU fans recognizing the "Jim Knew" sign and making jokes about it than St Johns fans.

And, no, it's not 'old news.' The issue is forever. And, as it relates to Fine and SU, ESPN posted the story about Laurie and ex-SU players just this week. Despite this board's best efforts to sweep it away to protect personal feelings, we are attached to it.

And so apparently is ESPN when they chose to freeze on the sign for 3 seconds.

JB knew we would win. ;)

I wish the board would take a page from boeheims awesomeness because as you demonstrate our fan base is really insecure and whiny.

OH NOES A SIGN FROM THE STUDENT SECTION.

Boeheim knew...that guy would fold up like a cheap beach chair when he spoke directly to him.

That's often how it goes. At the St. John's game at the Dome in the late-'90s (maybe 1998? it was the night of a heavy snowstorm about two hours before the game, which was delayed by about 45 minutes), a fan next to us was berating the refs throughout the first half. At one of the timeouts, Rick Hartzell walked over toward the scorer's table, leaned toward our section, stared down the fan, and said "Get a life."

The guy was slack-jawed. And he didn't make a peep for the rest of the game.

I really didn't pick it up until I watched it online the signs/Audio when KJ was shooting free throws at the 4 minute mark of the 1st half. I got a kick out of SU Fans saying Southerland was out of line after watching/listening to the Game. From the NY Daily News " Nothing seems to faze him, not the heckler behind the Syracuse bench who taunted Boeheim throughout the first half, constantly asking him where dismissed assistant coach Bernie Fine was; no some St. John’s undergrads who insisted on holding up pictures of Fine’s wife — who has been alleged by her husband’s sexual abuse accuser of having sex with past Syracuse basketball players — whenever an Orange player went to the free throw line."
