Future Campus Framework Discussion

I too would like AC & chair backs which is great for the fan, however, as a recruit this does not matter. Better lockers rooms, weight room, lounge area, etc... are a big draw. Do you remember that locker room view from the "They didn't know" video? Very High School-ish if you ask me and many others. That should be the focus of a dome reno first ( along with the roof).
Roof - Locker Rooms - LED light stuff

There is a brand new locker room and player lounge at the Manley Complex, where the team spends 95% of its' time.

Remodeling a locker room which is only used 6-7 times a year shouldn't be a priority.

The Dome seems fine to me. You are only in there for 2 1/2 hours and at least my attention is on the game. Stuffing myself with food and swilling down as many beers as I can, isn't high on my list.

If you subscribe to the theory that the Dome is a big problem and that lack of amenities is significantly affecting attendance, than this seems like money well spent. Especially if you think that larger Dome crowds will drive more wins and better recruits. (This is sort of backwards to the way I think it works)

Universities aren't like businesses. It seems they wait until someone gives them a pile of money and than they do something with it. In this case it was a little different. The University said, "If someone gave us a bunch of money, here's how we would spend it."

Apparently not enough people raised their hands as willing to contribute. And the economic and political world has changed significantly from 1978.

Some people took that as a concrete plan with at least a significant amount of the necessary funding already identified. And now they are disappointed that what they thought was true, wasn't.
the world has changed including the business of college football ---which is a business. it is an income producing investment----just like our hoops program.

the only amenites i would like is ac and and chair back seats. i too do not care about food or beer.
how ever i do subscribe to getting rid of the roof in its present form and modernize the appearance of the stadium

You may not care about concessions but many people do, especially the fringe fan that is there more for the experience than the actual game. SU's concessions are laughably bad when compared with most other arenas that I have been to.

Think I've said it in previous posts. The money from donors just isn't there. The renderings were meant to get people interested in donating and they were not meant to be leaked to the general public. If you guys saw some of the renderings of ideas other schools have paid to create in order to garner donor interest, you'd think every college was about to build a collegiate utopia and that SU was about to become a slum. Typically 5 years from that point, something gets done that is a shadow of that original rendering. You should see the renderings of Maryland's proposed practice facility. Heck our own IPF had some impressive looking ideas going back 7-8 years and three architects ago.

most of our bigger project have to be fully funded including maintenance before they even go up for votes and approvals. they may be known by higher ups and get out into the general public but never to the level of real details and cost.

Right. This has happened with the last two new buildings that were constructed at Le Moyne (granted not the same scale as what goes on at SU), but initial renderings of both facilities were much more grand than what was ultimately built, and both had to do with ability to raise money.

Haha! Good one! This is why I have a hard time blaming politicians for their skepticism towards financially supporting large private sector building projects with limited public good via subsidies, tax breaks, etc.

As a fan, I'd like a renovated Dome with all the bells and whistles. As a taxpayer, I don't really care for my money to be spent on a building for a private university to promote their brand. And I applaud the SU admins for understanding that the university has priority over its sports programs. One of them can survive without the other but not the other way around.

I agree...it just needs to be enlarged...you might capture some room by taking out the air supported mechanics for the roofl

True the practice locker rooms are more important but hundreds of players and coaches cycle through the Dome locker rooms every year. Leaving a small time feel in their mouths is not a good look for reputation down the line. That said, with a limited budget I'd go roof and wow type LED stuff. Big boi prep kitchen would be nice. Also some seat backs (better seats) and then paint the bleachers orange. I guess AC is now out of the question.

From a recruiting perspective I'd say not doing the dome is a huge mistake. Redoing Manley and creating the ipf were big helps but you look around the other colleges at clemsons playground they have built or Ucf building a lazy river for crying out loud... it is going to make it hard to compete. Renovating the dome to a state of the art facility would have been the next step in money being spent. I don't see them spending money on huge upgrades to the ipf or the Manley facilities any time soon. I suppose you could put all the football players directly into the upper class apartments instead of the little brick dorms. I just think SU needs to do more and quick to attract recruits before the staff feels they can't compete

CONSPIRACY THEORY ALERT!

Could it really be that they may be planning something bigger/better? With HCDB turning around an anemic offense, energizing the fan base, a solid season (i.e. 6 or more wins and a bowl) and they may be thinking they can do better than a new roof and expanding the concourses - a new stadium is more feasible. When looking at the renovations and what a new stadium would cost, it may be better to suffer a few years more and save/invest in a better stadium. Perhaps, even Baseball!

OK, enough dreaming, back to our regularly scheduled doom and gloom. Remember, the sky may be falling, but it won't fall to far, we are NOT Rutgers.
SU ain't got the money lined up. That's the old up.

i usually tailgate with my son and others before hand, and maxed out on food and beverages. the only thing i usually buy is water and maybe some m&m peanuts. i am sure others care about the concessions i was only speaking for myself.

not sure i agree. income generation, good for local businesses, keeps the name out there to promote other tourism ie finger lakes etc etc.
i do agree that it should not belong to su. it should be a county owned multipurpose facility.
the worst thing for su to do is to leave the planning and use of funds open for continued discussion by academia. once that happens there is no leadership, multiple agendas and i dare say ENDLESS circuitous of intellectual bs, that gets no where and no one at the university is satisfied.
if it is state owned then it should be a first class facility with a visitor center that has displays of upstate ny, things to do like finger lakes summer rentals, niagra falls, wine trails, casinos. and history of the area. maybe the ocha could be involved in that. just sayin. my disertation on all this is also endless!

It's my understanding that with the current soft roof, there are limitations on what can be "cooked" in the facility due to fire codes.

I'm not sure if it has to do with the roof or with the limited space available in the concession areas, but yeah, there is definitely a reason why it is so bad. Hopefully a renovation would address this problem.

so what stops them from being more creative on where they cook it and deliver it?

Did you care that $250 million of your and my tax dollars went to build a tech building in UTICA FFS with no hope of ever recouping the ROI for it?

Personally I think if su doesn't do something to address the lacking areas of the dome they will live to regret it. In the day and age of media being available anywhere and every game on tv, fewer people will head to the hill to sit on metal benches, eat crap food, flat beer, and get baked in a 95 degree bubble. Also recruiting will be effected with the poor locker rooms and player amenities. If the rumors are true and a new bubble is going on then this is a very short sided thought process from a penny pinching school that has zero problem soaking its students. Everything they do is on the cheap and just like it's past coaching hires it's going to bite them in the you know what.

how about we approach the oneida nation to build a facility that they own and operate and we and the state and county rent from them, or they loan su the money to do it.part of the deal would free tuition, room and board for all students from their nation for life. package deals of football and transportation to all casinos free show tickets etc etc.
why not??? sure it would be unprecedented, but what the heck. i know most will think i am way out there, but in this day and age anything would be possible. really at this point what does anyone care what the ncaa thinks.
the oneida nation onviously knows what they are doing and how to make money. i bet they would do a fantastic job of running a facility.
go ahead, you can make fun now:)
