Future Campus Framework Discussion

Advertising is always going to happen. That money is always there. I don't doubt anything you posted except for this. The bolded line is just silly
That advertising is all trade anyway no? Doesn't cost anything.

Have heard multiple account regarding the recognition in what they have in Dino and will make every effort to ensure the future is bright in the FB side.
That could imply that they still want to make a full blow renovation happen. Can't wait we just default to political bribery and kickbacks to finance a $300M remodel and then get slapped on the wrist in 5 years? This saga feels like waiting for the 17-year cicada.

Yep. Most of the unqualified overpaid people were in the Athletic Dept. Leal led that category for years. I don't doubt there is sone fat trimming ongoing on the hill. Would think this is temporary. Have heard multiple account regarding the recognition in what they have in Dino and will make every effort to ensure the future is bright in the FB side.
That is typically what we hear until the check comes to be paid...then the SU folks turn into T-Rex.

Vice President & Chief Facilities Officer Pete Sala said the Carrier Dome roof will be made from the same material as Minnesota's U.S. Bank Stadium, a billion dollar facility that will open this fall and house the NFL's Vikings this season.

"The biggest change you'll see is not having the white pillows when you walk in the door," Sala said. "You'll see a steel structural framework that's typical of newer stadiums today. … The new roof is much higher than the existing roof. I don't want to give too much away but we're going to work with a product called ETFE. You'll see the product in Minnesota. That's a really good example of what we'll do here. It's clear. You can make it darker. It almost looks like glass. It's going to bring a lot more light into the building."

Early plans are calling for a fixed roof that will make the venue more transparent, and provide exposure for natural daylight. University officials have cited a specific model in U.S. Bank Stadium, the soon-to-open new stadium for the Minnesota Vikings. That venue is characterized by a translucent roof and support structure that allows for views of the surrounding area.

One product of the roof replacement is the addition of LED lighting, which could have a sweeping effect on the Carrier Dome experience. For basketball in particular, this could lead to more interesting pre-game introductions, putting the Carrier Dome’s presentation on a level of more modern arenas.

One issue that has been on the minds of many observers is whether Syracuse can replace the roof without displacing any of its teams for the course of a season. University officials have expressed confidence that the project can be completed without the loss of games, but as Syracuse.com has noted, similar overhauls are rare among North American sporting venues.

IMO:

Per the above and many recent articles since we have known that many options are being considered since the announcement about renovations and a new roof for the DOME were released in May.

Perhaps it just takes this long to get it done - to figure things out? It is being made more complex by the fact that the administration, athletic department and those closest to its development do not want to disrupt any of the schedules of the teams that use the DOME for their games - one of the major points in the latest article.

Two sports that use the DOME the most are football and basketball. Would it be sensible to look at those two to determine if anything can be done considering only their schedules and have the other sports use other venues to play their games so something may get accomplished?

It seems to me some sacrifice has to be made by some sports or all. We had the chance to install seats with backs between basketball and football seasons. That space, “February – August”, in time is gone.

Can the new roof be built, seating put in place and air conditioning be completed in 5-6 months? If the new roof, quoted in the article, is translucent and will allow us outdoor light and views to the sky and other areas - is 6 months enough time to install it or is it actually a year? Maybe we’re wasting time trying to figure out time schedules for five sports and have to bite the bullet and play everything away until most of the work is accomplished. How? Where do we play? What about the lost revenue if we do vacate until the new DOME roof is done?

Or is it the fact that the funds are not there and donors are not stepping up to allow us to do anything right now and this is just another article to placate those who are very interested in seeing something started? Once the funds are there, and contractors are assigned to complete this project on time we may be looking much farther down the road than we think.

Complete talking to Nike. Either sign a new contract for the cost of the DOME renovations then Nike has to pay for naming rights each year if they choose or talk to Under Armor and Adidas about the same thing same naming rights. It will still be known as the DOME and the work will finally be done. I like many don’t feel like waiting until the DOME’S life is up in 2024. We need to satisfy the people using the DOME for viewing games and events, for recruiting for both Basketball and Football and to engender more interest in Syracuse University.

THERE'S NO MONEY

THERE'S NO MONEY
Why would they announce a specific dollar amount without having that money in hand. Did the state indicate that they were going to fund a portion and then not come thru? I can't believe that they would go public without the funding. Not questioning that the money isn't there, just crazy to make a specific announcement w/o the resources. Some type of funding had to have fell thru.

No, they need a fundraising target. Im sure thats common practice.

SU's behind the curve on this one, but the Framework shares some of these goals.
"One recent study, by the RethinkX research firm, concludes that the switch will be so extensive, however, that by 2030, 95 percent of passenger-miles in the United States will be traveled by on-demand autonomous electric vehicles owned by fleets."

is there anyway for me to borrow the entire life savings of the board plus my own to bet RethinkX that they're wrong?

95% does seem like an absurd projection in only 13 years. I don't think there's any chance that 95% of all cars on the road are autonomous by then, let alone the fact that 95% of people in the U.S. won't own their own automobile and will use only what is essentially a ride-sharing service.

Yes, that projection is a fantasy that is not going to happen, at least not in 13 years.

journalists need to spend a lot less time doing whatever it is they do at journalism schools and a little more time learning how to not fall for every study that gives them the answer they want
Critical thinking? What's that?

I didn't realize that was the only salient point in the article ...

People that believe this are out of their minds. They think every place is San Francisco or NY. I can't imagine ride sharing in 1000s of places. Am I going to take it from Fulton to see my great aunt in Canton? Or in some Deep South locales? Give me a break. I have a new car with updated gps take me through upstate Ny and half the time it didn't even have me on a road.

I wanted to raise this point yesterday, but procrastinated. The people that came up with that piece haven't traveled outside of their major metropolitan bubble. Having spent four years at Syracuse, having a car is essential and ride sharing will not cut it. This is the same for much of the country outside of large urban swaths.

I agree with the broader point, but Syracuse? Especially for a student (absent some extraordinary circumstances), it's pretty easy to go car-free. And these days ride-hailing fills in the gaps.

CENTRO is awful. I'm not looking at it from a student's perspective. The public transportation here is so bad, that you need a car to get around. I'm used to the MTA which is bad in itself and I couldn't believe how inefficient CENTRO was much less the number of people in Syracuse and the surrounding area depended on it to get around.

CENTRO isn't the only way to be car-free nowadays.

I haven't been back since 2010, so maybe things have changed.

In your defense, Centro probably hasn't changed much since 2010. It's pretty inefficient on even the major routes (too damn many stops) and worse on other lines.
