Game 1 Depth Chart / Game Notes | Louisville

Regarding WR, would the use of special packages on offense get a guy like Adams (and maybe others ) on the field?

INTERESTING to see Gadsen as a TE -- assume that's just a title, and that it is just a way to get a bigger WR on the field to create mismatches?
Must be Anae wants size and speed for special passing situations. Oronde’s got good size for a wideout but he’s not putting any blocks on LB’s or big safeties imo.

I know that he made a good impression this summer though.

As the QB-WR tandem go this year, so goes the offense. They have to be competent for Tucker and the running game to click. Really hoping they can get it done as a unit.

Simmons moved from FS to BS. Guessing that means they liked what they saw from Clark and Oliver once Jason got banged up and gave those two a chance to play there.

Oliver got a long look at Rover. Rover needs a special player who is strong against the run and can still do some coverage too. Thinking the staff moved him to FS because of his pass coverage skills (or maybe he struggled against the run)?

Still weird to me that Hanna remains at Rover and gets an or. He is awful thin to be playing that position. Guessing he makes a lot of good decisions.

Max von Marburg listed above James Williams. Does Dino want to do some Austrialian sideways run and put stuff like Rutgers and others have done with Aussie punters? I know they practiced this in the preseason.

Every year we get a lot of talk about Linton and every year it seems he is off the depth chart by the time the season starts. Hope he gets a chance to play and stays healthy this year. It would be nice to see what all the commotion is about.

The way the WRs are broken out, it sounds like Cooper is going to work at both OWR and IWR. Thought that was something Courtney was doing. Regardless, there is the 7th year senior Cooper and a lot of sophomores out there trying to catch passes.

Will probably use him in flex situations. In the slot against LB’s and nickel corners.

Babers said WR Isaiah Jones and S Jason Simmons Jr. are good to go for Week 1. DE Steve Linton was banged up during camp, but “he’s overcome that and he should be close to full speed.” Sounds like SU will be close to full strength against the Cardinals.

Your are right on with Rover. Have to be able to tackle. Size doesn’t automatically make you a better tackler. It’s a skill and some guys like Hanna have a knack for making plays despite size.

Yeah, Hanna is a heat-seeking missle, but because he's small he also tends to get injured from laying the wood.
Here's hoping he stays healthy, and that the larger guys can also chip in and save him from all that wear and tear.

Yeah I know Hanna has injury history. My comment is speaking in general terms about size and play making. I wasn’t advocating for him to start. Just saying size don’t make you better. I also see big guys get hurt all the time.

Babers on Dan Villari’s transition to WR: “We’re going to slowly develop him. He’s such a fantastic athlete and by him switching over, it was completely unselfish.” Said it’s possible Villari moves back to QB, but believes the switch was best for the team.

He's not moving back to QB with Shrader, Wilson, Lamson and eventually Sellers ahead of him.

If you watch his HS video, his pure athleticism past the line of scrimmage always made it a no-brainer to transition him into a receiving role if he was open to it. So I'm happy to see that happening because I think it's his best opportunity to be successful here and in the future.

I think this also speaks to Carlos Del Rio Wilson's talent level to basically walk in a few months ago and be #2 on the depth chart now.

Some of the surprises are probably injuries.

Jaquez getting the call at DE

McDonald at LB is where I thought he would be. Roon ahead of Sparrow is a bit of a surprise.

All three db transfers on the two deep. No Coley is interesting.

OL - that is the group and positions I’ve advocated since the end of last year, not surprised. 2nd string - no Tisdale.

WR, TE, FB. - they are going to be multiple. That’s your core group. With two subs they can go from super heavy to four wide and anywhere in between.

Hayes, Queeley, Adams could be injury, could be game plan, could be buried. Future will tell.

TB - good for Allen. Price will get snaps to

All good points

The things that stand out to me:

*Allen over Price. This might be the biggest surprise to me. So impressive in fact I wondered if Price was injured. Allen must be good.

*The OL - Would expect Berg to enter the draft but Davis is still the only senior on the 2 deep.

*Chase Simmons - 2 deep. 6-4 257 RedFr was a throw in late recruit. Kid is a beast from what I understand. Him and are Geer both from South Carolina. (Everyone on DL returns next year)

*Sparrow out of the 2 deep. Lowery has always been in the mix, but bullish on Roon and McDonald making the move. Roon made a big move. These guys love contact. Good stuff. And holy crap Thompson is 250 and Wax 240. SEC LB size.

I loved our RB situation during the Spring game but actually expected Price to begin the season at #2. Surprised, but happy, to see that Allen apparently has made even greater strides since then.

In the game prediction thread, I had Price getting his first SU TD in this game so I am on pace to make my first bad prediction of the year right out of the box. So Juwaun, if you get a carry please make it count for me.
