Garrett Shrader

I am not a Tommy detractor. I root for him as much as I rooted for all of our previous, great QB's. But in his couple of plays that he got in for... I am so intrigued by what Shrader and Tucker in the same backfield will look like. Shrader is FAST. Tommy made some great reads on his runs to gain real good yardage. I cant help thinking that Shrader might have taken those the distance. I don't know what he'll give us in the passing game yet but this guy with Tucker behind/along side him would putt some serious pressure on a defense IMO.
Looking forward to his opportunity.
im more intrigued by what Tommy and Tucker can do as this season progresses. that was a hell of a start for the 2 of them. this O might really start clicking if that line play continues to be legit!

as for Shrader, i saw a slower QB, in with the backups, during garbage time, after the starters blew out Ohio by 20 on the road. (yes, 3 TDs is a blow out, its why Dino felt safe putting in Shrader and the rest of the backups). the 4th QTR in the Albany game seems like a nice time to let him get some run.

Lets go Orange...beat rutgers!!!

The one thing TD doesn't do much of that I'd really like to see is for him to step up in the pocket north/south, I could be wrong but his tendency I think is to go east/west, and generally east.
This comes from where the protection breaks down. If the protection "leaks" from the middle, the QB has to move east/west to avoid the rush. In order for the QB to step up in the pocket to avoid the rush, the protection has to leak from the edge where the tackle forces an unblocked defender to widen his path with a vertical set. I'd like to see him step up too since it will give him the most time to complete a throw but he can't do it if that is where the rush is coming from. The O-line has to slide and protect correctly.

"They caught us off guard, with us probably just running, the running the ball. Sean Tucker, I looked him up after the game, he's really good one."

Well, based upon Albin's comments afterwards, especially with his "I looked him up after the game" remarks, I'd predominantly still argue he was pretty clueless, however, that's my interpretation. If he hadn't uttered such self inflicting prejudicial comments, your aforementioned rationale would carry more persuasive weight with me in the moment.

We'll see how things play out moving forward and against better coached/more talented teams.
I was told that all of training camp should be open and all that secrecy didn't help us...

Yeah but it’s not like Sean Tucker was a secret. I think he won the ACC RB of the week at least twice last year and he’s our returning leading rusher.

If Albin doesn’t know of Tucker after last years film do you think an extra 20 mins of practice tape would do the trick?

I watched the game last night in full finally. There was an opportunity to get GS in after we scored our first TD of the 2nd half. It isn't like we were throwing the ball all over the field, why not let him hand off a few times and read some option plays before garbage time?

I wish I was a lip reader to see what Dino said to GS as he was walking off the field when the clock reached 0:00.

Edit: I will also say I thought TD played really well. Made some great throws, ran better than I expected.
I wonder if Dino had nightmare thoughts of when TD came in for ED at WMU...WMU scored 21 pts in quick order. I do agree that 22-9 was pretty safe to put him in...but...FB coaches are worst case scenario guys.

Well yes, and - that Sterlin/Dino call the game in a manner that allows Tommy to have a hot read(s) for blitzes, where he can get it out VERY quickly.

Tommy needs to execute, but the coaches need to give him plays that make that easier in those situations.
We need to make SUNJ PAY when they overcommit to blitzing, not just by not getting sacked, but by making plays against it.
I hope he does well but let’s not already start the excuses if he plays poorly. (OL, WR or coaches)

I personally have no complaints about Dino playing Tommy the whole game. This isn't college basketball where you can easily absorb an early season loss. Losing wasn't an option on Saturday. Tommy was an effective game manager and we won the game by 22 more points than Vegas predicted.

That being said, I would like to see Garrett get the 2nd series of the game against Rutgers to see what he can do.

Exactly - there's a season worth of film available on him. Practice open or closed is irrelevant.

Now for Duce there may be a point there lol.

frankly I think most of the hate for Tommy comes due to the fact his father was here and loud for the last 2 years. GS hasn’t proved anything either yet people are acting like his is a sure fire winner and won’t make any mistakes
*since the summer before his freshman year even started

guess he didnt have any tape either?

I like the 2nd series curveball...but if we scored the first series, NFW will HCDB put him in.

Albin may be their Scott Shafer...we'll see. They had some weapons and I figure at worse Ohio should finish 7-5

At this point not getting any time in a game where we could run the ball at will, and not getting in would rather just let TD play against Rutgers.
No point in getting 2 QB beat up in a game against a team with a slimeball of a coach.

After seeing Tommy miss Taj by a step or two twice last Saturday, I’d like to see what Shrader has. TD’s deep game has me worried. Too early in the season for me to be in either camp as far as QB1 goes though.

That long fly route down the Cuse sideline wasn't TD's fault. He led him perfectly. I had a perfect vantage point to see that Taj slowed up ever so slightly at one point...and couldn't make it up. Cuseregular and I think he might have momentarily lost it in the lights. If he didn't slow down at that one point he would have caught it in stride.

Those seats we had were awesome...I love going to MAC stadiums once in awhile.

Tommy missed him once in the endzone.

PFF credited Taj with the drop on the deep shot not a miss by Devito. Tough catch but hit his hands

Ha. Imagine being an Ohio fan and hearing the coach say he had to look up our leading rusher from last year, and pretty much the only sign of offensive hope we showed.

Actually, don't imagine being an Ohio fan. It really doesn't sound all that fun.

How long have you been watching Syracuse football? Ever might be a strong statement.
Agreed. TD wasn't asked to do much but, for the most part, he did it well. Very RJ Anderson - like.

says stuff like that happens...I know Scott would not be that unprepared, probably GRob too. Honestly, that falls on his DC to figure out that #34 was a pretty good RB for Cuse.

Everything we’ve read and seen points to Shrader not being the guy that hits that pass more than Tommy.

That’s fair. Honestly I felt like I was nitpicking as I was typing what I wrote as I was very happy with his performance generally speaking. I do want to see him make some deep throws though. Probably a grass is greener thing on my part.

So by your answer you go back to at least RJ Anderson :). We have seen a few QBs that would not have pulled off the game manager role that TD did vs. Ohio. :^)
